I ordered mine on the 25th of July, ETA of August 13th. It has never changed since i ordered. Did i make it before the 780's went on backorder? Did your guys date change after you ordered?

How is nobody complaining that the only Alienware config with the 780m is 3700$? How many people are really going to spend that kind of loot on a laptop? This and the Asus pricing only make MSI and Clevo machines that much more attractive IMO. Honestly how much more real world game performance does the 4930mx vs the 4700mq paired with a 780m really gain? Right now a GT60 can be had for around $1885 with a 4700mq, 780m, 128GB SSD and 1TB HD, 16gb ram, BR Drive. I am just really lost how Alienware really justifies this pricing and lack of customization. Also their laptop is almost 2X, 2X!!! As much..

I believe Dell is testing a few things out... in this regard. This is actually a new scheme they are using. In the beginning (Alienware 17) they were quite a few "fixed" pricing models for the machines. They even added an additional one a few weeks in I believe. After, they got rid of quite a few of them, and even calibrated their price-point/market value. Now during this time many people have already placed an order for their rigs, therefore, they are not affected by this price hick we see today - including even paying attention to this change in pricing.

To answer your question: many people perhaps have not seen it yet :D because the bulk of the bunch already placed their orders long ago before this change occurred. Luckily for me, my rig being built is not affected by this price hick. Also, you have to consider the MX processor. This particular item is not cheap by any means - especially coming from a 4700MQ to 4930MX is going to cost a pretty penny. It is actually safe to assume you may cost around a grand (give or take).

I ordered my Alienware 17 in The Netherlands 2 days ago and after ordering it said it had est. time of shipping on the 10th of September (which was because of the 780m). Though when I got my order confirmation yesterday (status is now 'work in progress'), it says the est. time of shipping is the 25th of September. No reason whatsoever specified and I didn't get an email about another delay..

Is this a normal way for Alienware to just delay orders? Or was I a few minutes too late with ordering (someone grabbed the 780m minutes before me while it was shipping on the 10th)?.

i ordered my July 29, was scheduled to arrive on the August 20, but will arrive tomorrow on the 15. So im pretty pleased with that.

Also when i ordered my Aurora they kicked back my arrival date by 15 day without sending me an email, i called them and they informed me that the wait was on the cpu and there was nothing i could do but wait. I still ended up getting my machine on the original arrival date, but of course thats here in the states.......

I already sent it back. was dead-on-arrival unfortunately. However, I was compensated with a system with better spec, particularly they gave me the extreme cpu :D

The previous system did come with triple pipes equipped on both the CPU and GPU. I had to open up the system to yank out the battery while I was troubleshooting the DOA issues.

Yeah, I find Alienware TOO Expensive! I'd rather get an MSI with a 780M if I needed one. Alienware's 4 year warranty is $489 + maybe $269 for 4 Year Accident Protection. Dell is awesome on quick warranty repairs but they are just too expensive now.

Hey there I am about to pull the trigger on the Alienware 17 after the many headaches I received after getting my Alienware 18 and its screen issues even after returning and getting a second 18 (and many tech visits) @.@

Just curious if these specs are worth the cash? (mainly concerned about HD option) I'm hoping to use this for games like Watch Dogs/BF4 and hopefully run them pretty high..

    Alienware 17

    Windows 8 64-bit

    16GB Dual Channel DDR3L at 1600MHz

    NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 780M with 4GB GDDR5

    256GB mSATA Boot + 750GB SATA 3Gb/s (7,200 RPM)

    Slot-Loading Dual Layer Blu-ray Reader (BD-ROM, DVDRW, CD-RW)

    4th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-4800MQ processor (6MB Cache, up to 3.7GHz)

    17.3" 120Hz WLED FHD (1920 x 1080) TrueLife Display w/3D Bundle

Just realized I posted this in wrong thread apologies!! Should have went to config thread questions sorry >_<!!

Agree, it all looks pretty good.

I would say about the disk config that you may be able to save some money and end up with a better machine though. If it's possible to get it with an msata cache SSD then it will be almost as fast in use as a standalone SSD. And you can then add an aftermarket SSD to either install windows to fresh or just use alienrespawn to create an emergency USB and restore that to the new drive. Only needs the boot order changed in the BIOS and you end up with a fast dedicated boot drive and an accelerated data drive. The drive bay also runs slightly faster than the msata port (SATAIII not SATAII) but this is only noticeable in benchmarking in my experience ;)

    Good luck.

Actually in the new 17 model all the ports including the msata are SATA III (believe me because I have tested all of them). The last year version had only 2 ports on SATA III and the other 2 on SATA II (if there was another 2 because I do not know if last year's model had a msata port), due to the processor limitation.

And Alienrespawn only restores the system if the current SSD is the same as the original specification. It does not restore on the drives smaller then the original configuration...

That's good to know re the SATA, I wondered if they would fix that. I guess they dropped one of the fast-USB ports since the chipset still only supports 6 x 6Gb/sec ports, and the OEM decides what interface to use them on?

Yeah respawn is kinda a weak option because it cannot resize partitions but as long as the target is the same or larger you can dynamically add the spare space after in disk manager.

Something like Ghost or partition magic would be much better - at least if someone is looking for a simpler option than a full reinstall.

I really dislike the fact that you have to get the 256GB mSata SSD + 750GB HDD combo with the 4930MX on the AW17. They really need to open up the configurations more...come on Alienware.

I was on the phone yesterday with them about getting a system and it was like $230 over my budget, and they wouldn't lower the price, nor could they remove the SSD...it's ridiculous. They kept telling me to get a lower configuration system.

I had the same problem. It took a few more phone calls and too much time on hold, but I convinced the rep to help me out because I could prove that other 3rd party websites were able to sell me customized Alienwares. I really feel that solved my problem. If they can do it, why can't you? Still way too much of a hassle though :/

I ordered a new Alienware 17 bout a week ago and got it 600 dollars off. From 2740 (2910 with tax) to 2130 (2310) with tax and couldnt be happier. My specs are:

    Internal Performance Components:
    Processor: 4th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-4800MQ processor (6MB Cache, up to 3.7GHz)
    Memory: 16GB Dual Channel DDR3L at 1600MHz
    Hard Drive: 750GB SATA 3Gb/s (7,200 RPM) + 64GB mSATA SSD Caching
    Video Card: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 780M with 4GB GDDR5
Optical Drive: Slot-Loading Dual Layer Blu-ray Reader (BD-ROM, DVDRW, CD-RW) (Your computer will only play BluRay if it is specifically listed here)

The sales rep that gave me such an awesome deal was:

    Sales Professional: Gregory Garza
    [email protected]
    1-800-695-8133 x 4169523

How I got the deal was by telling him that I had two choices, either Alienware on MSI. I said I had a college budget and the minimum I had for a computer was 2300 to 2350, anything more then that I'd have to ask parents for money. He said sorry we cannot lower the price, about 5 to 10 minutes later he came back to me and said I can get it to the price above and I was happy with that. It was just a matter of persistence and making it firm that the only money I had(which was 2350) was the only amount I would spend on it.

And luckily he was an awesome rep, nice guy and I even sent a report to his manager about how happy I was.

Oh and I forgot to add this my mother werent with me at the time so there was no way I could call her to give me money. Plus she wouldn't because she doesn't have any so.
Gotta push the point through and make sure they know it's either this or you go somewhere else. And also a nice rep.

EDIT: I forgot to say that I also told him that I bought multiple alienwares in the past, which I have to make it seem like I am a reliable customer and would come back again and again for a good price. Make sure to stress these words in your voice if they still don't give you the price you want then hang up, they will either call you, not call you, email you or not email you. Either way there is a better chance of them giving you the price if you are serious and not just on tilt about it since they will take you seriously back.

Hi all, thinking of ordering my first Alienware. I configured the following on the Canadian site, with a $100 off coupon I found online. Should I expect anything better by talking to someone online/phone? Price is $1549 (including the 100 coupon) + tax. I basically took the base build and upgraded the screen, left everything else as is. Thanks!

Also, I plan to sometimes use this on a desk hooked up to an external monitor. If I have a budget of roughly no more than $300, can you recommend a decent monitor? Does Dell offer a good one in that price range that might help me get a better overall deal from them? Thx!!

I was just curious of those who got a replacement laptop from dell because theirs died or something of the such.

I have a new alienware 17 and it died on me the 2nd day I had it . They sent tech to fix it and couldn't . So they approved me for a replacement I am just waiting for them to call me back with my new build specs and complete the exchange. Should be tommorrow or next day.

    Question .?
Can you upgrade say like to the 120hz screen or upgrade hdd and pay the difference like as if your ordering a brand new one again or are you 100% committed to what you had before .
Anyone have experience with this .

    Thanks

Edit . Mine originally came with windows 7 . Could I have the new one shipped with windows 8 instead .
Just curious . Figured windows 8 would be more future proof than 7 and more compatable with future hardware like ssd's and what not.

    Thanks again

No they wont let you upgrade it. the option you have is to get a refund and re-order.

    Hey all.
Been reading reading the forums for a few weeks whilst waiting for my laptop.
It's been horrible waiting for it to come.
Anyway dell marked my laptop as sent on Saturday and are using wuk. My tracking link tells me that my laptop departed Manu.facility on Saturday but hasn't moved since. Sort of worried it's gotten lost or know my luck the plain broke down on the way here.

I'm leaving on Sunday for a new job which I need the laptop for but not sure if it will arrive.
Anyone shed some light on when I can expect it to start moving or arrive?

Usually weekend shipments don't get tracking update until mid Monday or even early Tuesday.

I wouldn't worry about it; it should be along by Friday at the latest. I'd expect it by Wednesday.

Thank you for your fast reply.
I hope it comes soon. I've been a bit disappointed with Dells customer service. I just hope my laptop hasn't got any problems as I can see it being a pain to sort out

Don't worry about it, I had no tracking update until the laptop landed in the UK, then it was updated and delivered the next day. I don't think they track whilst abroad or in flight.

I wouldn't be suprised if you got it before the tracking was updated. It will suprise you. Just hope that the delivery person does not leave it in the open by your front door when you aren't there

They would send you a message on your phone first, I think the day before, and an email so if you haven't received any yet then you might have to wait another day :/
