Would the m17x be able to run 3 monitors with the 680m?

I apologize if my questions have already been asked.
If I buy a refurbished M17x R4 with the 120Hz 3D LCD from the Dell Outlet, will the nVidia 3D Vision shutter glasses and built-in emitter be included in my order?
Also, if it comes with a Blu-Ray reader, will it come with Blu-Ray playback software? And does it support Blu-Ray 3D?
If it has only a single HDD, will the mounting bracket for the 2nd HDD be included? I remember they didn't include it with the R1 I ordered years ago.
Or did Dell leave all of the parts off to reduce the price?
I've had good luck buying refurbished notebooks from the Dell Outlet in the past, so I'm crossing my fingers on this one.
Oh, there's another one with 120Hz 3D LCD, GTX 680, i7-3610QM, 6GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 32GB mSata, Blu-Ray, Intel 6250, Nebula Red on the Dell Outlet for $1689 right now. -
HOLY SMOKES. That is one cheap Alienware!!
-
I'm tempted for that

The built-in emitter will be, for sure. I'm not 100% sure about the glasses, but they should be included.
Yes, the system comes with Cyberlink PowerDVD and supports 3D.
Yes, the second caddy should be pre-installed in the second bay. If not, I would ask them to send you one, as it comes with new systems.
I've seen awesome deals on the outlet before, hope it works out for you too!
Edit: Wow, that's a good deal! I'd recommend maxing the warranty with those savings.
-
Looks promising, thanks Prime!
Now that I think of it, I guess there wouldn't be any reason for Dell to remove the emitter, seems like a lot of extra work, and the glasses and software are much easier to replace in case they are left out.
BTW, I noticed you had a M17x with 3D, what's your opinion of the 120Hz LCD? Does motion in movies, non-3D games, Office apps, etc seem 'smoother' and more fluid vs 60Hz LCDs? From what I've read, I like the idea of a faster, possibly more fluid LCD when scrolling through long docs in Word all day long, watching movies, etc. So is it all a myth?
How do you like the 680M SLI in your M18x R2? Are you able to FN+F7 to use only the iGPU? I understand this isn't possible with the 3D-equipped M17x's due to the LCD connector.
-
I have been very happy with it so far. I would like it if I could get it to work with the Tridef 3D software as well but I can live with that. I play 3D games on my 92" projector as well but the clarity and detail of the 1080p at 120Hz 3D on the 17" screen is pretty damn sweet.
I haven't watched too many movies yet and can't say that I have noticed a big difference browsing web pages and stuff with 120Hz. I can say that it is nice to know that I am running at it though LOL. The biggest advantage of the 120Hz screen I would say is that it is brighter than the the 60Hz screen and that is very important with how reflective this screen can be for daytime usage. -

No problem, hope it helped!
Yeah, it would be a pain for Dell. I didn't look at it when I had the lid off, so I wouldn't know how easy it would be to replace the emitter. I don't see a reason why they wouldn't include the glasses, returns have to go somewhere.
Yup, I owned both the M17x R3 and R4 with 3D vision. In my opinion, the screen is more smooth when watching movies and sometimes while gaming. It isn't a big difference to me, but I think it is noticeable. In games, it sort of varied from game to game, so I couldn't always tell (especially considering FPS would need to be above 60). I'm not really sure about office apps, I hadn't considered that before. When I'm doing productivity tasks, I'm sort of in a different mindset. In my opinion, it is definitely not a myth. When I switched to the M18x, it did seem just a little less smooth in movies. Though, the 60Hz 1080p LCD is no slouch.
I'm really having fun with the 680Ms in SLI. I've seen a bit of stutter in some games, but it seems the recent BETA drivers have fixed most of that. It's nice to be able to just chew through games, and still have plenty of power left. The M17x R3/R4 was still an awesome experience, though. Yup, I can FN+F7 to the iGPU, which I do when I'm on battery (not often, though). You're correct about the 120Hz display, you're stuck on the dedicated GPU all of the time. Though, I never found that to be a problem as I was plugged in most of the time.
Good luck picking out the right system, it isn't always easy.

bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
The Emitter I think goes behind the LCD panel somewhere behind the Alienware text. I don't think its that hard to add in later if you already have the panel. Should just have to remove the display, then take the lid off, put it all back together.
-
Should have mine in a little over a week :3
-
Tell me about it LeoVainio!! My Tactical Messenger Bag should arrive 2 weeks from now. I can't wait!!
-
I already have GTA4, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Crysis, Crysis 2, Just Cause 2, Splinter Cell: Conviction
ready to install the second I get it
Will buy Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 real soon, and a friend already has games like Dead Island that I can get off him.
I am SUPER excited
I don't know if I should get the messenger bag or the backpack :S
What's your steam ID?
-
Nice games! Get the Battlefield 3! I love playing that game! It's usually the online fps game I play right now. But I do have the Modern Warfare 3 and Black Ops. Right now now I am playing Guild Wars 2, playing it on the highest setting, running at 50-60 fps. What a beauty this game is. I'm also about to finish my Metro2033 (one of the most demanding game)! I'm just stuck at one part though.
Regarding the bag, I used to have the backpack orion for my old m18x. It's really heavy when I carry it. Everytime I carry it, it feels like it's going to drag me down! So im trying for a change and settled for the messenger. Will surely let you know my good friend.
Steam: MardyBum

Looking forward to play BF 3 / MW 3 with you Leo

I join in in this bf3 chaos?

If anyone wants to add me on Origin/BF3/Steam feel free. ID on all 3: TheDukeofNukem
I'm going to be spending a lot of time in Battlefield when Armored Kill drops in a few days.
-
Will definitely get Battlefield 3
What are your thoughts on Guild Wars 2? I have like 5 friends who play World of Warcraft, so if I am gonna start an MMO would be really tough to choose something over that
Steam: MrNagasaki
Origin: DrNagasaki
(it's from a sick song)
Post your Steam ID and Origin ID
Already got you on Steam
can't install Origin yet because it's PC only, so I'll be doing that in about a week and a half and we can get on BF3
-
Optimistic Prime Notebook Evangelist
Yup, can't wait!
Since you haven't gotten it yet, I would recommend "Battlefield 3 Premium Edition" if it's an option. It comes with Premium, which will give you access to all the expansions (and other benefits) as they become available.
-
Yeah was definitely gonna get Premium
didn't know I could get it all in one as Premium Edition, Origin also sells some packs which let you unlock the weapons etc.. since I'm quite a bit behind
Battlefield 3 Premium Edition - Origin
On the Origin store however it says I can "pre-order" that Battlefield 3 Premium Edition... it's already out though so I wonder if pre-order means anything or if that's simply buying it right away
Can't wait to play though
will be seeing you on the battlefield soon enough

Origin: SNmustang95
Steam:SNmustang95 -
Just add me guys! You can find my info above.
I already have the Battlefield 3 Premium Edition and I cannot wait for the Armored Kill!
As for the Guild Wars 2, I ditched WoW in replace for GW 2. I find it more fun compared to WoW. Plus, GW 2 surely maximizes our Alienware M17x. The graphics are beautiful! -
Well WoW does look pretty good fully maxed out... and I have a lot of friends who play it. But there is subscription fee, and starting retail so late would just be difficult and time consuming
hmmm
-
WoW is pretty when it's maxed out? Well, it didn't amaze me or anything. GW 2 did on max.
-
HIDevolution says it should take 3 days to make the customizations I want, and then 3 days to ship here. So if I order tomorrow hopefully I'll have it in a week
so excited!
-
I am excited for you my friend! How much was your budget btw? My budget was only $2K.
Amazing buy for me!
-
Lucky for me I recently graduated with an IB Diploma, and my previous laptop (Macbook) is almost 5 years old.
In other words, I'm getting it as a graduation gift and for university, with a budget of about $4K... which I'm kind of abusing with some overkill components since I don't need to spend my salary
But seriously an SSD drive, 3820QM, 16GB ram :S way overkill, so $2K for a 7970m is a steal as it performs better than the 680m and easy OC
-
That's alot! With a budget like that I think I'll get a 680M SLI!!
Ohhhh the things that I can do with 4 grand :O

I see that a lot of people opt for the 120Hz screen with the GTX 680M, but 3D is not for me so I do not plan on getting it
This is setup is based on the website configuration tool, less $150 coupon (originally $2,249). I will likely call it in to try and get a better deal -
Wow, that is pretty good LegendKillaXXI!
But I'd get the 680M with 120Hz though. Overall nice!
-
I would go with that LCD, but I don't plan on using the 3D. Unfortunately, I'm one of those people that get motion sickness from 3D
-
True! I also get motion sickness from 3D but it's 120Hz it makes it look you can have a smoother gameplay.
Reminds me of Samsung's Auto Motion Plus from their TVs.
-
Hey guys could you do me a favor
Randomly ran across this upcoming free to play 3rd person shooter, and I get early access to VIP Beta if I get three people to sign up via this link https://www.playwarframe.com/?ref=86011007
All you gotta do is write your email or whatever, and a random username
and yeah so would really appreciate if a couple of you could just take 1 minute to do that, even if you have no intention of ever playing it
-
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Done! Have you placed your M17x order now? -
Thanks a lot MickyD!
Hopefully I'll be placing my order tomorrow
then the waiting game begins! Luckily HIDevolution already have the M17x R4 w/ 680M + 3D in stock, and can make all the changes in my signature in 3 days
the rep says should take 3-4 days to arrive  Awesome
Add me on Steam
-
Nice man. I might buy the same system but cant be that cheap. Where can i find that coupon?
-
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Cool
Here's hoping for a speedy delivery.
-
apparently the coupon doesn't work. I web chatted with some dell reps today. one said the coupon was expired (even though my cart says it expires Nov 2). another rep said the coupon was already included in the price. If the coupon is already in the price, this is first time I've ever heard Dell do that
whatever the issue is, I'm going to eventually call in and get some quotes. I'd like to get one hard drive rather than 2 in raid as I plan to put a solid state drive in the laptop
I'll update once I have a chance to call in -
i just chatted too. They told me, it already has huge discount. Then i said " website says includes all laptops and my friend used that coupen. " Then she said you can use it. :S However when i enter the code it doesnt put the price down. Let me know what they say on call.
Edit: i plan to put SSD too
-
Two GTX 680s in SLI seems like it would be future-proof for a couple of years at least. The M18x's aluminum case and hard-switchable iGPU are pretty sweet too.
Sounds tough.
It's good to hear that the 120HZ LCD is bright. I'm in a sunny enviroment so I may get the Green Onion Anti-Glare screen protector.
AG2 Anti-Glare screen Protector for Dell Alienware M17x 3D (2011-2012) | Green Onions Supply
Also, Notebookcheck reviewed a 2012 Toshiba Qosmio 3D notebook which I believe has the same 120Hz LCD. It's brightness is very low in the review, but from what I've read they were running the faulty nVidia drivers which reduce brightness by 50%. Not 100% sure though.
Review Toshiba Qosmio X770-11C 3D Notebook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews
Thanks to everyone for their input! I'm probably being a bit paranoid about the missing parts but we'll see. It arrives tomorrow - will post if any necessary parts are missing. -
Good to see that they have a model of the Anti-Glare protector for the R4 3D screens now. I think I only saw non-3D ones on the Dell website. I may look into getting one at some point but I always have bad luck putting those things on my cell phones without getting hairs or air bubbles, god help me with a 17.3 inch screen
. Would be nice to have the extra protection for the screen itself as I do see light marks from the keyboard sometimes that thankfully do come off.
In regards to brightness, this 120Hz screen is BRIGHT. The model number sounds the same from that Toshiba review but there is no way that he was looking at the same screen setup that I am right now if he thinks it didn't go bright enough. -
I tried calling in and I had no success. One rep said the coupon is already included. Another said the coupon was broken and wasn't working the way it should on the website. Regardless, I'll try my luck again another time
FYI, I'm on the Canadian site -
Hopefully I'll be placing my order within the next couple hours
will keep you posted
Posted this earlier still need I think 1 or 2 people to help me out
would in all honesty take 1 minute
-
Optimistic Prime Notebook Evangelist
Done.
I bet you're pretty excited for that M17x by now! haha
-
Yea... I did this but it's kinda off-topic for the thread.
-
Thanks
yes I am! Unfortunately HIDevolution ran out of stock for the M17x R4 3D
which would have taken 1 week to arrive, now its gonna take like 2 weeks
big deal but still haha
Thanks
yeah I know but just been talking with a lot of people here so thought I could get a small favor, no more posts like that
-
They are doing something wrong to be honest. Everyone says different things. Expired, broken, already in deal.
-
Got an amazing quote for my high end M17x R4

Ugh I want so bad right now.
-
I just need your OCZ Vertex 4 512 GB thank you!
-
so the best i could get out of any rep was $50. I guess it's better than nothing, but I've talked to enough different reps now that I think I'm going to get offered anything better than that. most of the reps I talked to were very reluctant to offer any deal. I went ahead and ordered the machine that i previously posted.
they did offer to swap out the raid set up for a 1 tb 5400, but i opted to stay with the 7200 drives. the discount would have been $75 less.
hope this helps -
So that included reps that you got from the sales thread as well?
