Guys! It's time to pull a trigger in the Alienware site for a limited time only it seems!

"Save $200 on this Alienware M17x when you spend $1999 or more."

I configured an M17x with a 3610QM CPU, 7970M GPU, 12 GB of Ram, Win 7 Home, 500GB 7,200 RPM, Full HD Display and with a Killer Wireless for just only $1,844 and make sure to use a $50 coupon code that can be grabbed from google! No need to haggle on the phone! This is a superb price!! Pull the trigger now guys!!

For what I want which is only a 680, HD, wireless N, and advanced warranty. It'd be about 2 grand and some change. With the discount and 50$ off. Which isn't too bad.

Well I've encountered a sheer problem. Either keep my car and get the other car Ive been saving for, which sadly means no m17x. Or sell my car and get the car I want at laptop. Such tough decisions...

Nothing compares to a well done Fox Coupe though..........I had a '94 done up before but I got rid of it and found my way back into a coupe. 408 Windsor in a 2900lb car = WIN.

Uff finally should be getting my order placed

They failed to charge my credit card a couple times... turns out the bank was canceling the purchase because they thought it was a fraud attempt or some crap and :D didn't even decide to notify me..

Good thing is it won't delay the delivery at all.. because Hidevolution is waiting for their shipment of the M17x's anyways. :D should have it within a week and a half  aww yea

If some stores like Hidevolution.com still have any in stock....

Otherwise you would have to buy a refurbished one, or second-hand from eBay or something :S

Why do you want Sandy Bridge?

2500 is definitely enough :p the extra 500 would get you some nice extras, but nothing necessary (or easily upgradeable later)

    Barely..

If anything just apply some thermal paste.

Wouldn't you prefer a better iGPU and less power consumption over like 2 degrees less heat?

People, please help me to solve this question:

    Why in official Alienware/Dell configurator I can't see (choose) 1TB 5400rpm HDD for m17x R4?

But on eBay or other trade places I see models with 1 x 1TB 5400rpm HDD.

    Thanks in advance for answers.

They probably replaced the Hard Drive and declare it as Brand New? I got my Alienware as brand new but they actually opened it to check some defects or scratches.

No, I don't think so, because laptops on eBay is in sealed boxes and I read in this thread about m17x R4 model with 5400rpm HDD...

I know that in august DELL manufacturing laptops with these HDDs.

May in september they ends configurating this model with 5400rpm HDDs and disable this option in web-configurator?

I know all pluses and minuses of 5400rpm HDD, question was: why manufacturer hide info about these HDDs in official configurator of m17x-series? what the reasons?

Because they probably want their customers to have the best experience for their laptops even though it is at its base configuration?

In standart configuration m17x r4 comes now with 7200rpm hdd, I can't see 5400 rpm in standart and in additional equipment.

Alienware don't think about experience for customers in august when produce laptops with 5400rpm hdd's?

It is myst for me :)

    For example:

I think you might be missing something. Dell will change the config offered depending on their price and supply as well. If a drive becomes less attractive, or more costly they will change it. They have to stock spares as well for every size/speed they offer. I've watch the drives on offer change a few times over the last 6 months.. The third party suppliers will put in whatever you ask for.

Well honestly my opinion is that 5400rpm hard drives are stone age crap... There's 5400, then 7200, then Hybrid Drives, then 10000rpm drives, then SSD's.... forget about the old 5400 drives please :p

How slow is it when it comes to booting up a system?

One option is to buy a smaller SSD, say 64gb, and use the intel raid software to set it up as a caching drive. You don't have to use the msata port, any bay will do and I've heard good things about the speed increase with no need to re-install anything. Easy upgrade, it will be slightly slower (about 5 seconds on boot) than a complete reinstall on a SSD but in use it appears to be just as fast.

You could use disk imaging software to move it all but most people recommend a clean install.

Am i going to notice significant difference in performance between the 3610qm and the 3720qm ? Is it worth it for me to upgrade to the 3720qm?

I wouldn't think you'll notice any difference, definitely not significant. Depends on what your using it for but if gaming then it's all about spending the cash on the best video card - of your chosen manufacture...

In gaming, no. However some games like GTA4 or Skyrim are very CPU dependant, so if I would have to suggest a CPU I would take at least the 3720QM... it's not much more expensive, but the 3610QM has the most significant drop in GHz from all the others... so it simply doesn't look appealing to me.

But honestly there is 0 noticeable difference between two i7 processors :p so spend your money on the best GPU or maybe an SSD :)

Hey, I still think 5400 RPM HDDs make for great storage drives. ;) I have my movies, music, backups, and etc. stored on it. I don't ever hear the drive, and it doesn't produce a lot of heat. :p

Anyone here having throttling problems with an OC'd 680M (crash/BSOD included)?

Have anybody tried a 1.037v vBIOS like the ones on the Clevo/MSi cards? How does this vBIOS affect the performance of the card?

Hi guys after replacing 4 m17xr3's and getting a refund, i have held back from getting any laptop, since my heart was set for an AW, but i was scared to trust 'em again, but now i really need a laptop (the AOD 150 is too slow for any meaningful work and the MBP is with my wife) ....i wanted to ask AW M17r4's users which one would be better

I have access to 2 options/ packages from AW
    3740qm/ 32Gb 1600's/ windows professional/ 64mb msata and 750gb hdd/ killer 1103/ 7970M/1920x1080 60hz screen), 2yrs warr.

    3740qm/ 16Gb 1600's/ windows home prem./ 64mb msata and 750gb hdd/ killer 1103/ 680M/ 1920x1080 120hz screen 3D), 2yrs warr.

Now the issue is at the current price bracket, there is a 200 AUD difference between the 2 (AW sales will not discuss anything ... Packages are as is)

    I basically need:

    the best battery life
    The best bang for buck

In that order.....and i dont want the 675M
Now the issue is i have been an nvidia fanboi, till the 6990M turned me, as optimus was a PITA in the games i played, and having no control over the gpu's i was having (460M) the ATI (6990m) fit the bill quite nicely. However with the 7970M it seemed it was the best of the bang for buck solution, but then enduro reared its ugly head ( yes ATI is making new drivers but they aren't really that good) which meant battery life was appalling.

Would you recommend to stay with the 7970M with the mem. and all the stuff (not really requiring 32GB but the package is inflexible) or you reckon the 680M with 3D is a better option considering you get a 3D display and NVIDIA's excellent driver support (can't de-select 3D screen otherwise the decision would've been easy-as, i really dont like 3D AT ALL....but pkg. is inflexible)...we have to decide between these packages.

PLEASE r4 users help a fellow NBR member out, thanks

Hi. Ive had an R3 before this R4 - probably the same reason you returned yours. Sounds like you had 580 issues so the 675 is not on?

Anyway, sticking to what you say is important forget the 3D and 120hz display. If you don't like 3D then it's more of a 'purist' thing and you loose the iGPU so battery life is compromised. For me this is an advantage :). I rarely use battery and am completely free of Optimus issues. I'd say that you are heading towards the AMD solution. I have only read about their issues here so I can't comment. I'm also a NV fan but I love the 3D so I'm looking at the 680 for my next purchase. HTH!
