You should be fine. Ppl don't recommend you mixing ram though. I'm not sure if they mean mixing voltages, frequencies, or brands. My guess is brands, which knocks out the other two.

Its a lot of the above. Other then certain brands just don't like each other.

Can someone take a SPD dump of their HyperX RAM and I will flash my stock m17x with it. I will let you know if this is good and safe. I don't mind the risks.

Mixing frequencies and voltages is a lot more worry-worthy than just mixing two brands.

It still isn't recommended but as long as they run off the same voltage, speed and latencies you should be fine.

    K. So the stock ones are 1333, so I can just buy any 1333 and it'll be fine right? And THEN I can make the new and stock ones all run at 1600 through the bios right? (I'll be having the 2720).

Bump for advice, and also to confirm that if I buy the HyperX, I can run it with the stock ram, and bump all the speeds up to 1600 cuz I have the 2720 cpu, right??

    Thx!

No. Because the ram that came with your r3 would be just 1333Mhz. You have to take them out in order to use the 1600Mhz of the hyperx. :)

Kune, have you checked if that statement is still true with A03 BIOS? 'Cause in my case (2820/hyperx 1600 16gig/post-recall R3), when I switch to xmp profile 1 and manually set the frequency to 1600, hwinfo32 shows the real xmp profile 1 values (666.7 - 7 - 7 - 7 - 20) regardless.

Looks like they fixed that in A03. Can you check please?

I guess that does not work with A03. Basically what kune tried to do is to bluff the bios with low CAS, right? I tried setting 1600 + xmp profile 1 but constantly got BSOD.

Right now i will just stick with xmp profile 2. I put frequency as "auo" and it shows in aida64 as 1600. No need to change the value to 1600.
I didnt set voltage too. It seems to be working now.

Yep, I went for higher frequency of xmp profile 2 instead of the lower latency of profile 1. I didn't BSOD while i was trying to outbluff the BIOS and HWINFO32 a-la Drake and Kune but the R3 behaved like it was supposed to - dropping the frequency to 1333. Isn't it infuriating that you can't cheat anymore when the guys in front of you in the same line did just that? :)

Can someone answer this grand question: What can one do with the stock ram? (I.e. max potential/max performance settings)? Or are we stuck with what we get (which is absolutely fine for me :))

I've never tried to do anything with the stock ram. You can try playing with timings or up the voltage, but I don't think that will do much (I'm pretty sure it's best to run ram at the timings and voltages that are stated "on the box" - recommended by manufacturer). If I remember correctly, Mandrake is into memory OC - maybe drop him a PM and see what' sup?

I am running 2630QM so no point in getting the HyperX 1866 I guess.
I have found the 1600mhz on amazon uk at different prices and I was wondering maybe you can give me some help.
    Kingston HyperX Genesis XMP X2 Grey Series - Memory - 8 GB : 2 x 4 GB - DIMM 240-pin - DDR3 - 1600 MHz / PC3-12800 - CL9 - 1.65 V - unbuffered - non-ECC: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories - £52.95
    and
    Kingston HyperX PnP - Memory - 8 GB : 2 x 4 GB - DIMM 240-pin - DDR3 - 1600 MHz / PC3-12800 - CL9 - 1.5 V - unbuffered - non-ECC: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories - £78.62

Is the second one better or its a pricing error somewhere?
Also are the prices good, like standard or are they expensive, from what I researched they are about the same like this everywhere.
If the second one is better I might go for :
    Kingston HyperX - Memory - 16 GB : 4 x 4 GB - DIMM 240-pin - DDR3 - 1600 MHz / PC3-12800 - CL9 - 1.65 V - unbuffered - non-ECC: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories - £105.98
Would be double the ram for 30 pounds more. Even though I think 8GB is enough for me for everyday use + gaming, no benchmarking interest.

Jesus, I don't know how I missed that they are DIMMs, I will look for some SODIMM.
Ok, the only ones they have are:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-1600Mz-NonECC-SODIMM-Memory/dp/B0047A7B60/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1311008548&sr=1-1

I think I will stick with 8gb anyway because it will probably be enough. I will couple that with an SSD and I think my laptop will be a true beast then.
Do you think the price is right or i should search another website for better price or 1866?

    thank you

I finally got the 1866 but I have doubts that its automaticly scaled, should I set the XMP to profile 2 anyway? I have checked with CPU-Z and it says 930Mhz but it changes sometimes so I guess it will upscale if necessary but only to 1333 or 1866?

I just got a BSOD while finishing a level in a game and just when its about to move to next level and it was 1a and it was about memory_management, I think the RAM might be faulty, I will check with memtest later but since it happen just when the level of the game finished when it usually loads the next level into the ram + the fact that the BSOD is related to memory_management makes me think its from the RAM.

Am I the only one that doesnt understand why everyone recommends Kingston HyperX over G.Skill or other brands? I can pick up some SODIMM 1600 mhz, better latency g.skill for $70 compared to $110 for the HyperX. Just seems like your wasting money on worthless heat spreaders and "popular" RAM.

Also are you guys saying a 2720qm can support 1866 ram? Cus on Intels page they say it can only go up to 1600 mhz ram...

As i said CPU-Z reports 930Mhz and as james_2k kindly pointed out its 920x2 which is 1860 because of double data rate.

    yep :)

pnp ram can run at its advertised rate regardless of cpu. (assuming correct chipset)

and you can choose an option in the bios to make the 2630 work with 1600 non pnp ram too. (an xmp profile?)

So youre saying that as long as the model is a Plug and Play RAM module the i7's can support up to 1866 RAM? Would non-PnP RAM be able to do this? Because the 1866 RAM on newegg it currently running a very expensive $148, I don't know if the increased speed is worth doubling cost for the Kingston compared to G.Skill 1600 ram w/ CAS 9.

Thats what I read before I bought the RAM, that PnP is the way to go, otherwise I think XMP profile 2 might do the trick but not sure as to all the way to 1866.
