Yup, that one works. Stock 4gb is more than enough for anything that I've been doing (gaming, school, the usual).

You can go with the 1866 ram but tbo its not worth the money. You may see a small increase in certain benchmarks.

I have the 1600 set in my M17xR3 and works great. I got the non PnP set but all you have to do is make a simple change in the bios and that's it. Also for $65 AR you cannot beat that price for 8GB.

    Newegg.com - Kingston HyperX 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model KHX1600C9S3K2/8GX

Anyone tried the G.Skill 1600Mhz one? It has similar heat spreaders to the HyperX blue physically and the timings are 9-9-9-28 so the differ by one. I might go for these just to be different :)

Looking for all opinions. With the specs in my signature would it be best to go with 8GB-1866-RAM or 16GB-1600-RAM? Plan on using the Kingston HyperX pnp. I also plan on adding SSD in the future but 1st things 1st. Thanks to everyone on this board/forum also for helping in giving me the knowledge in getting my 6x failed XPSM1730 replaced w/ my current sig. & not settling for the refurbished XPS17-702x that was forced on me. Although I wasn't allowed upgrades even if I was willing to pay I did receive a brand new Alienware. You all are the best & I hope someday I can help you all or someone like myself.

So no one has a answer for my question about RAM?? Original question is on this page. Just wanted some advice. So many conflicting issues when trying to configure i7-2630QM I know when this post first started options were different due to Kingston had not yet started manufacturing pnp yet. Help me out!

Right to answer your question. The 2630qm is able to support both the 1600Mhz types. With the regular blue ones, you need to change the XMP settings in the bios, with the PnP ones, it's just that, plug and play.

So in your opinion which is a better choice? 16gb of 1600mhz or 8gb of 1866mhz?

I'm getting only 8GB of 1600 as it has better timings than the 1866Mhz ones. It is the sweet spot as it gives arguable better responsiveness due to the lower CAS. Plus the 1866 ones only noticeably benefit the IGP which I do not have as I am using the 120Hz screen.

I have the generic 8GB (4GB X 2) Dell 1333 RAM...To make it 16GB, which Aftermarket RAM upgrade would be suitable with the same clocks, pins and timings?? Or just any other 8GB (4GB X 2) 1333 RAM and timings pins clocks need not be similar???

Hey I'm looking for a good deal on memory for the M17x R3. What sticks did you guys/gals buy and how much did you pay?

I've got 8GB of DDR3 at 1333... Is it worth it to buy memory with a higher clock speed?

So after my original post and everyone's thoughts, I decided to go with the 580M (will be my first NVIDIA card). I think this will do just fine for me and the gaming I do.

    17.3-inch WideFHD 1920 x 1080 60Hz WLED
Alienware M17x, Soft Touch Nebula Red
    Intel® Core™ i7 2860QM 2.5GHz
    4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600MHz (2DIMMS)
256GB Solid State Drive SATA 3Gb/s with Secondary 750GB
    2GB GDDR5 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 580M
    Slot-Loading Dual Layer Blu-ray Reader (BR-ROM, DVD+-RW, CD-RW)

Now onto my question... RAM. I only put 4GB in the machine since they want $400 (really?) to upgrade to 16GB. I know I can change it out myself, but which ram should I use? I was thinking of using Kingston HyperX 8GB kit but noticed they have to different sets, the DDR 1600 and DDR 1600 (PC3 12800 w/ XMP). Whats the real difference? And which should i get? Not sure if I will overclock the laptop...

I have finally got round to upgrading the ram. I would like to increase it to 16GB.

Where is the best place to buy from in the UK and what product code for the Kingston ram.

I just googled a Kingston KHX1600C9S3K2 which appears to be discontinued.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

@aznpos -- Probably not, based upon any quantitative cost-benefit analysis, but it's faster and fun, and HyperX 1600, in its various forms, sort of fits the R3. I'm happy with mine.

@rdtkp -- Delighted to be of service. Good luck with it.

Does the 1600Mhz ram work with the 2670qm processor or only its higher end brothers? I am sure i read somewhere that i would need a 2760 to support the faster ram?

I just ordered my Kingston HyperX 1600 MHz today. I am anticipating delivery of my new MX 17 this coming week (if the EDD holds true). After I check the system & do a backup, I will install the new DIMMS (8 gb). I know that the stock memory ( 4gb 1600 MHz) isn't quite the same as the HyperX, but is there any real issue with using it until I get another 8 Gb set of HyperX ? Also, I think I saw a thread somewhere of all of the things I should do with the new rig BEFORE I start playing with it & loading up software. I'll be damned if I can find the thread again. A little help anyone ?

I am wanting to upgrade my R3 from 8gigs to 16gigs of ram. the 2 slots under keyboard is empty and I want to get some opinions on the best ram to purchase.

    I have the i7 2630QM processor and currently have the factory 8 gigs installed and they are 2 4gig sticks pc-3 10666 @ 1333mhz

I have searched the forums and been reading a lot on what all is said about ram for the R3 and noticed some people has posted the DDR-3 1600 will not work with my processor,am I reading that right?

I was thinking of going with either Kingston or Crucial ram and buying 2
4gig sticks for now and then going back to upgrade the factory ram to match what I am buying, or should I replace all at one?

I just want to make sure I am going to be ordering the correct ram for my
    R3.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

First of all, higher clock speed ram will work fine with your CPU as long as you get PnP.

If you get faster ram and run that together with your factory ram, they will downclock to 1333Mhz.

If space is all you need and to be honest, people hardly see the difference when it comes to speed, save some money and just get 2 more 4GB sticks for 16GB.

PS Also ask yourself the question: do you really need 16GB?

    Hi,

I have problem with my RAM module, I get every time BSoD after gaming.

    My system:
    M17xR3
    CPU: i7-2860qm
    GPU: GTX460m
    BIOS: A09
    RAM: 8Go Kingstone Hyperx 1866Mhz.

I run DELL PSA and I get every time memory error (code:2000-0123)
I run Memtest without any error.
I get error with prime test.

I play with BIOS and set RAM to 1600Mhz and manually timing to 10-10-10-29
With this setup I do not get error with PSA and prime test.

(For info: XMP profile don't work, by default the BIOS is set to auto frequency detection. I make some test with frequency set to 1867Mhz )

    Please any help is welcome.
    Thanks.

Are you using the 1866Mhz grey modules? They don't work very well in the M17x R3. Loads of people report crashes, freezes and BSODs.

    yes I'm using the grey ones: PartNumber: KHX1866C11S3P1K2/8G (PnP 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1866MHz CL11 SODIMM)

The technical support of kingstone tell me that they test this module in house with M17xR3 and it work perfectly ! but he don't precise with any BIOS (A08, or A09) they test it.

So what do you suggest to me? change RAM module? try to use modded BIOS ?

    thanks.

nope you won't notice a difference. I'd take quantity in this case.

However, Komputerbay? I'd get something a little more reputable

I agree about the brand. I'm asking because I already have the komputer bay ram. It seems to run fine, no issues. But I can return it and get a better brand or faster ram if you guys think I should.

If the ram is working fine, just leave it. I'd take 16gigs of 1333 over 8gigs of 1600 anyday of the week.

So I'm planning on getting aftermarket memory, as it's much cheaper than upgrading during the initial order. Two questions:

    1) Is it ok to buy two of the same individual modules and pair them up, instead of a pair of modules packaged together? In other words, the computer can't tell or be negatively impacted by the fact that you bought two singles rather than a pair, right? (Getting two of the individuals is cheaper in my case.)

    2) I know that some motherboards tend to be picky with memory. I haven't heard of any problems with the R4, but I just want to confirm that there aren't any big "gotchas" or known incompatible/flaky combinations out there. I'm considering CAS 9 1600MHz Corsair Vengeance memory.

    Thanks!

as long as the memory is running the same voltage, they will be fine. They don't have to come packaged...in fact, there was no difference in ram packaged in pairs and sold as "dual channel" versus if you were to buy 2 individual sticks of the same memory

1600mhz corsair should work just fine

Thanks for the info. I was pretty sure that a computer wouldn't be able to distinguish two individual sticks from a packaged pair, but I wasn't sure if some manufacturers might be tricky with things. =)

Since you mention voltage though, is that really the only thing that matters? Can I take the 4GB module that comes with the computer and pair it with another 4GB, 1600MHz, 1.5v module and be set? Specifically, what if the manufacturer and memory timings (e.g. 9-9-9-24) don't match? Will everything gracefully degrade to using the slowest speed between the mismatched pair of modules?

    Thanks again!

the biggest headache is the voltage...you don't have to worry about the rest. If you run 2 sticks with different timings, the system will downclock to the lower timings.

It is typically good though to get the same timings

They work perfectly and have arguably the best timings among 1600MHz memory. Can also be flashed just like the HyperX to 1866. That said, I don't know why everyone says the HyperX is such a rage. Agreed it has a great reputation but well, I'm kind of a rebel and went for the Vengeance memory, just like I got a SanDisk Extreme SSD instead of a Crucial M4 or Samsung 830 ;) and I've 5-star experiences with both of these purchases of mine. Also, the Vengeance is noticeably cheaper than the HyperX for the same performance, I see that as a Win-win. But if you don't mind paying the little extra for a brand of memory that everyone swears by then go for it! I see nothing wrong with the Vengeance 8GB kit though, it works spectacularly well

Those are good but you need to activate one thing in your bios to achieve those speeds. However, there are other options such as the Hyper grey ones of the Corsair ones that are plug and play.

quick question from me as well, I have the 2630qm installed still as it runs all the things I need to do perfectly fine, but is it compatible with 1600mhz ram? I have heard conflicting reports and just wanted to know before I ordered some. Thanks!
