At this point you should be starting to worry about your screen and mobo, put the 5870m back in, see if the laptop works normally, if yes, then continue to troubleshoot 780m, if the laptop will refuse to work with the stock card @5870m, then you can assume 780m damaged something, or you damaged something while doing the upgrade.
Let us know about the outcome bro

So be carefully -
-
I reinstalled the previous graphics card and thankfully the screen is working fine but still the nvida is not working
I went to device manager while I was on safe mode and I saw the GTX 780 in there but when I update the driver and choose automatically detect the driver it switched to standard vga -
maybe we would find a solution... -
-
anyone got this beast running yet? im really considering getting one soon.
-
updates soon as in my sig -
awesome!
i really wanna try sli 770m but i cant find any info about it (vbios and such). if the 780m works well ill just go the 780m route. -
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
If you can get a good deal on a 680M that will make more sense than the 770M route.
-
I got my 780M to work on my Alienware last week... See SIG.
I havent gotten around to posting my instructions yet...

very nice m8 and what a gr8 photo!!we cant wait!!!
-
Ok, problems
so i can boot into safe mode, from which i am writing now.... if i attempt to boot into normal mode, i will see the windows logo assembling, then the screen will go snow white and that's it.
i have uninstalled all AMD drivers prior to installation, and used DriverSweeper in safe mode.
also laptop have rebooting problems, sometimes the screen will just stay black after reboot and no POST.
I have to remove AC and reconnect to get it to work again....so whats now ? Vbios flash ? -
Sorry to hear that mate.
Did you try inf modded nvidia drivers? -
-
u should be able to install gpu drivers in safe mode. other than that, what vbios are u using? and u might wanna try to fresh install windows.
-
Unsure if relevant but I noticed on the Upgradeyourlaptop eBay listing they advise use of BIOS A08 Unlocked 80.04.92.00.02 for m17x R2 owners.
Alienware M17X M18X NEW Nvidia GTX 780M 4GB DDR5 MXM 3 0B | eBay
Not sure if that makes a difference at all -
I'm keenly watching this flingin, I was going to pick up a 680M a while ago but opted to wait for a 780M and see if it was worthwhile. Good luck ! -
so i don't know what to do....... -
there's a vbios for 780m in techinferno. have u tried that yet?
-
I just got some very useful info from Eurocom, i come back to you in about 2-3 hrs to post the results
-
any news yet??
-
Still in testing phase
Here is hoping flingin cracks it. -
Still no luck, I am on A10 unlocked bios now, trying to disable IGD ....with no luck, still the same, can't boot into windows normally.
-
Can you boot from your Windows 7/8 install CD and into the installation process?
When I got my 680M, despite using Driver Cleaner and CCleaner to remove all display drivers and registry entries, Windows wouldn't boot normally and only a format and clean install would fix it. -
-
Either the HW works or it does not, i can't work @ random interfals
You offcourse have to be aware that the drivers can't install without problems just as the msi from Nvdia won't work as downloaded from Nvidia, they have to be modded first.
any idea what the part number would be to mod it? -
My suggestion from experience with my old r2. You need to make sure that both the mobo and card have fresh bios flashed. If you have a spare hdd install your OS on that by having the 5870 installed. Once complete have the driver prepared for install of the card. Once your driver is ready. Install the card. Once booted into windows. Install the Nvidia drivers before uninstalling the ATi drivers. After your ATi drivers are removed you should have no problem. By the way from experience don't use driver sweeper for this process tends to foul up the Nvidia driver. After this the 780m Should be set. I had this problem with 580m's. Mainly its an issue with the fact that the card is Eurocom flashed with a dell vbios. works but not the greatest.
-
no idea at all.
-
Good luck man. I'm sure you'll get it sorted. Anxiously awaiting your results. And some benches
-
Ok I was able to install modified drivers in safe mode, this time I used modified drivers from Eurocom, but still same issues.....
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Sounds more like a firmware issue than a driver issue.
-
-
Yeah it seems the bios on the 780m is not allowing the screen or something to function in tandem with the card.
-
so i guess it doesnt work.. bummer.
-
Well let's hope eurocomm come out with modified bios or someone does cause all em series clevos and older alienwares are not compatible with this card unless someone comes up with bios mod.
Fingers x. -
This is what I was talking about
The same thing happened to me and after a long discussion with eurocom they asked me to send the card back to them and until now no response from them -
They really should have tested it thoroughly before dispatching to customer. Looks like this 780m only works with newer systems and the 8970m probably won't make an appearance till when nobody knows?? -
so i guess the best the r2 can handle is a single 680m or dual 7970m?
i couldnt find anything about 680m sli. -
I really want this card to work they received my card last Friday and should reply on me anytime soon
-
Flingin, any update on how you're going with this ?
-
I pulled the card out and installed 7970m back in, i have to work, listen to the music, and play some games to relax, i can't do it in SafeMode
Since i got the card just next to me, and i am in contact with some people, you can be almost sure that when i get it to work or have any updates i will post them here.
What can be said so far, is that card is working fine in safe mode only, and regular boot will return you a white screen just after windos logo before logon to win 7.
I will be trying to flash it with dell vbios soon, and maybe some other vbioses, but if this does not help, i really don't know how to do it.
Vbios seems to have a glitch, at least with R2, if i could ask DR or TheWizz to take a look at the vbios of this card and maybe modify it a bit.....i don't know it is alot of work....
Post your ideas here anyways, when the day comes, i will try them all.
It would be AWSOME, to have it working, not because of performance gain ( 100 FPS or 150 WHO CARES your eye won't see it anyways ), but for me it more like when vampire drinks blood - Soooo refreshing, is it ? -
What a bummer.
I am sure some day in the near distant future a bios will become available for this.
Thnx 4 updates flingin. -
You have no possibilty that someone else with an M17x or M18x can test the card?
Maybe sell it off?
Other thing you might want to do is cpntact Svl7
Bios is his thing, he shows up here sometimes but is more active on his own forum TechInferno.
Perhaps you should PM him? -
Still don't see the point to doing this. It should be clear, just from scores alone, that the 920XM would have to be maxed out in overclocking to even attempt keeping up with a stock 780M. Unphoto, your Vantage run with the 680M would probably be close to what you'd have to maintain 24/7 just to keep up with the card.
At this point, you all have to just look away. Sure you can upgrade, maybe, but it's a waste if the rest of your PC is holding it back. -
I dont agree.
Your cpu would be sure to balance the load to the gpu.
The gpu could recieve more information from more cores at a higher clock, but, i am not sure that a lower clock on the cpu would "bottleneck" the 780m.
A 680m is by no means faster in a M18 then my R2.
Using a synthetic benchmark to determine real world application does not make much sense.
Drivers and application optimisations are key for gaming and GPU relations. -
Given I've been looking to upgrade my video card for a while and the 780m was just around the corner I figured I'd wait for it and ensure that my R2 was 'future-proofed' a little longer.
Incidentally Flingin, I'd agree with unphoto - I came across the following thread when I was searching for information and it seems remarkably similar to the issue you're experiencing but the owner has an m17X R3.
So the 'white screen' issue doesn't seem restricted to the R2.
M17x R3 GPU upgrade to gtx 780m - Page 8 -
hahaha so the r3 is not compatible with the 780m..
What is this card made of some abstract out of this world algorithm that nvidia deployed?
