Looks like Dell has pulled all GTX285 options off the M17X online configurator. 920XM is back up. Perhaps this means GTX460M is around the corner for cyber monday/christmas considering the m15X avaibility?![]()
In any case, this looks to be good timming, as it appears that at least one, if not both of my cards are officially bricked. Worked fine last night, this morning I had a black screen freeze situation when normal booting. Safemode works, and I can get into the normal desktop if I disable one of the cards, but the other card still will not start properly. Driver reinstall did nothing. Removing crossfire cable does nothing. Might try switching HSF's and see if it's the secondary card or the primary. Both were on stock clocks.

I still see it in the build option for the M17, but yes it would be nice to see the NVIDIA GTX4xx cards out for this laptop or better still the GTX5xx
-
I'll be testing this soon
just need to get the SLi cable.
-
Looks like it was just a hicup, the 920XM is gone too. May have just been cached history or something/

I am waiting for R3 more than the 460M.
-
you'll be waiting a long time.. at least Q2-Q3 of 2011 the way Alienware moves on new products. Typically it takes them 6-9months after product announcement before they begin small scale (ie M11/M15X) introduction.

Anyway 285 SLI,single is back online.
Looks like it was removed for no reason.

Yeah! 460M is <= 5870 mobility so I got no excitement for it unless it was 470/480M. -
Well, it's really about average, 460M is better in nvidia optimzed games in the same way that 5870's synthetics have always been stronger. The main advantages this round being that they're viable nvidia parts with superior directx11 tesselation, have 512mb extra buffer, they consume as much or less power than 5870s, and they should overclock like crazy

I had a read up on the 460m and its spec sheet. Technically, this card should have a considerable amout of potential. Saying that one is better than the other is again, splitting hair over very minor differences. Not to mention, we already have some leads with the 460m SLi. I would personally prefer a 470 myself, but a 460m SLi is still no slouch and about neck and neck with the mobility 5870; where it might lack, it can make up for in other areas.
-
exactly. Given both are about the same I'd pick the Nvidia option, the MMO I play and the games I play are nvidia optimized most of the time, and I just prefer the brand to a degree(GTX285's not being within that degree lol). I don't think too many people were confused that GTX285's were faster or even close to 5870s except in a very limited way, this time it's more even and the feature set is equivalent. besides, They fold better.
-
The desktop card its based on (the GTS 450) can overclock to 900mhz (core) fairly easily with the right board (Asus, Galaxy, etc.) Only problem I see with the GTX 460M is the relatively low memory clock (around 650ish mhz). If the memory can even reach 900mhz then the 460M should have similar OC potential to the 5870s.
-
Regardless, SLI GTX 460m's would not be much of an upgrade if any when compared to crossfire 5870's. They'd both perform about the same. I real upgrade would be SLI GTX 470's which would be 20-30% stronger.

Indeed.
Of course it isn't an upgrade. However, it is a nice, somewhate equal alternative to the 5870s for those who can exploit these cards properly. -
Manot bean upgrade, but a definite option for us NVIDIA Fans
GTX285 removed; prepare for 460M?
