3D won't work because the system bios only approves the 460m, 560m and 580m.

Hi guys, I cant seem to get the card to accept either one of the roms- gtx 580m or the 675m. Furthermore im using the latest drivers from laptopvideotogo- 302.59 with the inf file.
How would i go about adding the id's for a gt 675m to be recognized to be flashed?
I have attached an error msg when attempting to the flash the card. hopefully someone can help me out with this because im absolutely struck

    Try this:

    nvflash -i0 -4 -5 -6 romname.rom

With the latest version of nvflash.

thanks for that katalin, worked like a charm yet I cant get it to work with the 675m rom. It doesnt detect the nvidia card after the restart and i think its because i dont have the id's for that card in my inf file. Also on a side note the latest drivers for the card are rubbish. Im experiencing frame drops in BF3 and arkham city which never happened before..

The inf files from laptopvideo2go LaptopVideo2Go: Drivers work just fine, also you're not using the ROM from the first post?

Download the drivers from Nvidia and download the corresponding inf file from the site above, and overwrite Nvidia's inf file.

The R3 will not support 3D with the 675M/680M because it's not supported in the bios like widezu said, doubt Dell will be adding it in.

OK guys. Since I'm wearing the corporate hat, and I saw this conversation, I have to say something official. Please consider this. Official statement: “Mods like this one are not in line with Alienware designs specs for the system. You increase the chances of causing long and/or short term damage to your system components. There is the chance that if a failure analysis engineer can determine what you have done that your warranty will not be honored in cases where mods like this can be determined to be root cause of component failure."

Does it actually DO anything? The 580m and 675m are the same card, same speed, same scores. Unless there is some 6XX only feature this unlocks I can't think of any good reason to do it.

Changes the name at most, therefore it's harmless. Some people have noticed improvements, some haven't.

The vbios on the first post have had over a hundred downloads, no issues and no complaints.

I don't doubt it is safe, just in light of the Dell response I probably wouldn't take any risk unless there was a big benefit. Not worth having them blame the vbios flash for a breakdown just so I can have the name change (which you can do with INI tweaking anyway).

I can vouch for this being safe. Using it right now, actually. Reason for use: I was testing compatibility with the R3 and using 3D on the newer cards.

I've been reading, sorry, I wouldn't quite know how to tell you, but go back over the initial post, you might not have used an inf to add the 675m IDs so you can install the drivers.

And, I'm kind of curious... if someone can unlock a BIOS, what is it that is restricting people from adding the 6XXm cards to the BIOS for the R3 to get 3D?

    Thnx

    Hi Guys,

First of all this thread was GREAT. Seems every expert is involved in this discussion.:hi2:

    I Have a Alienware M17X R3 with GTX460M Intel Core i7-2630QM CPU @ 2.00GHz and 8.00GB Ram. I have no Idea about Graphic cards but I like to play games. Recently a Dell Representative checked my laptop and confirmed my 460M has been Damaged(I am not sure if he is right). I am Planning to replace it with a GTX 675M Graphic card bougth from ebay. I have few Question;

1: Is it a Good option to Upgade from GTX460M to 675M. Can my Laptop Handle the GTX675M Well?
2:Mine is a 3D Laptop. Does all the GTX675 come with 3D and does 3D work?

I am spending every penny of my savings to buy the Graphic card. So, It would be a great help if someone can help me out. I am a big gamming fan but could not effort a lot. Please find the Attachment Images of my Laptop and help me out.

Hey Guys :hi2: it seem that msi in the gt70 have found a way to remove the throttle at 78° its as simple as making pop-corn :D, all they had to do was to make the P1 as the performance preset insted of the P0, so even at very stressful test like Furmark or Kombustor the card will always refer to the P1 stat and will run without throttle even at 87° (wich was the highest temp ive got after 3h of running Furemark) anyway here is the Original Msi Gtx 675M Bios and i wich if sameone out there is still checking out the post, and i hope if you can help me to Overvolt the P1 stat from the native 0.85v to 0.92v, also there is samething i couldn't identify that block access to memory clock and make you unable to make any modification on the memory clock (i tried AfterBurn and Inspector each time i slide the memory clock a little to the left it go back to its default clock 1500Mhz) :p

    Bump!

So with the advent of the newer Nvidia drivers, do you ex-580m'ers think it's worth to make the flash to 675m? I'm stuck at the 296.10 drivers because the 3XX seems to cause these weird no-BSOD sudden death crashes.

    Hi guys,
Dunno if this thread is still alive or not. Just have a few questions regarding upgrading the graphics card of the r3 to a 675m. Anyway, i have a friend who recommended me to upgrade my 6 month year old r3 with the nvidia 675m. My question is bascially

    1. Will it void my existing warranty since i have a few months left on it?

    2. Is it worth the upgrade and what are some important things that i should know about? (Ie. from reading the forums, i gather that i would lose 3D capability in my system.)

Appreciate any opinions from the experts!

tried flashing my 580m to 675m, drivers were unable to install, even the newer 331's. nvidia inspector would not detect the card. not sure what was wrong? i'd boot from the usb, do "nvflash -4 -5 -6 675m.rom" and it would seem to be fine. reboot to windows, and i couldnt get to install due to the "cannot find nvidia hardware" thing because of the inf file. got an updated inf file from laptopvideo2go and it bypassed that but the drivers STILL failed to install.

I ended up switching back to the 580M vbios, and i was having soo much trouble between the ty recent drivers and overheating, that i switched from the 580M to a 7970M. I also think my R3 fans are dieing, so i'll be getting a cooler with a large 280mm fan, until i can build a mini-ITX "portable desktop" to replace my R3... as much as i love having a gaming laptop, the performance to dollar ratio of a mini-desktop, it just cant compare.

Not sure about this. Every vbios I tested for 'fixing' the power throttle simply matched the P0 and P1 clocks and voltages so that when P1 kicked in it made no difference. The absence of the 78c throttle might be a msi thing I would think, but I would never run a 580m at above 75c - the are a very unreliable card and fail at the drop of a hat - I've had two 580m's and two 675m's go bad on me and none have been overvolted - except by bad NV drivers: http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware/721878-nvidia-320-18-driver-warning.html. And I've seen a LOT of other 580m/675m failures here on NBR

No, there is no benefit from a 675m flash, it's exactly the same settings as the 580m and only causes problems with driver installs. I would guess you have a bad card, mine went exactly the same as yours last time it failed :(.

See above. Flashing to a 675m should help a R4 since this was a stock card on the R4 so it's very much plug-n-play then (hopefully). Personally I would never flash a vbios meant for a different card but others (as this thread says) have had no issues. Remember though, if you have a 120hz model and the card gets messed up you have no iGPU to use for recovery :(.

See my earlier answer. The only reason I still have the 675m is that dell keep replacing it under warranty (motherboard as well last time!). You can put in a different card and not void the warranty but you will need to put back the original for a service call. As soon as the warranty expires a 680m is my next move.

You'll loose 3D with any card that was not sold with the machine so all the 675m flash (or a replacement 675m) in an R3 does is break 3D on the 120hz models and require a modified driver every time you want to use a new version :(.

Best card to go for based on the experiences of a lot of R3 and R4 users is the 680m. A big leap in performance and many people have done this without a problem.

You will need a modified inf to allow the driver to install (laptopvideo2go) but 120hz works on those machines and as mentioned 3D does not :(.

I do have a 675m vbios with P0 and P1 clocks (stock 620mhz) and voltages matched at 0.92v but I do not recommend it. You can then use nvidiaInspector to up both clocks. If anyone want's it let me know but it IS a dice roll on how long it will last...

    Any questions :D ?

Edit: You guys might find this interesting as well :) : http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-17-m17x/749654-nvidia-long-awaited-337-5-a.html

780m also works with R3 (and 980m with R4), why 680m is best card for those models?

Just based on what I've seen. The 680m runs much cooler and is a solid overclocker. 780m not so much AND it has a tendency to mess up the on-board sound on the R3. The 980 was going to force me to use win 8.1 and no way was I going to use that POS, so I just got a better machine - the X8 in my sig.

Win 10 looks much better IMO but until NV and MS get their stuff together I have to wait that one out, far too many issues right now :(.
