Also increasing the BCLK will increase the overall performance of the system (ie RAM bandwidth) not only the CPU

Well I'm waiting on Abo to send me the key, just sent the donation. Do I just need to hit the Get FSB button? Or is there a PLL I need to put in? I'm new to the core-i CPUs and currently have the i5 520 in the system. 920XM goes in friday

If you have the core i5 in your system did you purchase the upgraded PSU? Unless I am mistaken I believe the i5 M17X R2 come with a lower powered PSU.

If I am mistaken then just forget my comment.

In case that it is not the standard 240W PSU you will need it before installing your 920XM or your PC might not start telling you at boot the PSU is not compatible or does not generate enough power.

I got the crossfire 5870s. It comes with the 240 if you get either 920 or x-fire. I started messing with SetFSB, and it's too unstable. Half the time it freezes, and it doesn't play well with over volted GPUs for some reason.

I already got it installed, check the sig scores ;) Yea, your seeing that vantage score correctly :p

LOL, I don't think any electron would move inside that laptop at those temps.
It would be a very expensive ice cube though... :p

    *EDIT*
I wonder if anybody will attempt to use liquid nitrogen...

LN2 for the GPUs would be SO easy in this laptop....the cpu maybe as well

That is a Johnksss sort of project though lol (I know he has the tank)

No, temps were not my limiting factor. Rather the BIOS of the laptop - at the end of the day that was what held me back :( If I just had my full memory bandwidth I would probably gain several hundred on the CPU score alone and BAM, over 15k lol

I got an idea scook: Build yourself a mineral oil tank (like an aquarium type tank with a radiator + high capacity pump attached) and throw your M17x inside it and then bench.

That would end up being warmer than the Freezer I think. And it would slowly saturate with heat where the freezer is active in continually removing heat.

And there is the issue of me not dunking a $3500 laptop in a tank of oil....

It is really more of a gimmick rather than an effective method of cooling - and of course even less practical than LN2 or DICE in my opinion

That's why I mentioned the pump + radiator. People also combined it with LN2: LN2 + Mineral Oil = Overclocking PWNAGE!! Won't be as effective as LN2 directly of course but it'd still be fun.

no ln2 yet. only dice and phase. looking at grabbing my ln2 stuff in the next few months. just getting my boards together for benching mobile cpu's

i concur...but you do have something else that you can dip.. ;)
    refer to upper post.
    lol

    edit:
that qpi isn't that bad for a c0 920. back in jan of 09

inspire..that would have worked if you benched for a few days then shipped...not looking like the case..lol

nah, mobile benching has always been there, but had to finish up my other projects first. then figure out which boards to grab..i have three in mind and one on the way. just trying to get a good deal.
and ones with a good bios.

speaking of bios, i took a look at yours. going to look it over and see if it can be recompiled with the added mods.

Greatest thread EVER!! joker OC'd my 720 with turbo on to 1.81/3.03

Now can i go higher if i turn turbo off? and which is better with or without turbo boost?
Also, if do I have to raise my memory voltage and cpu vcore with those settings? just wanna make sure I am doing this right first timer :)

here is a screenie of setFSB [IMG]

I use SetFSB all the time when benching. You might be able to squeeze just a tad more out of it by setting the registers to 00/0F to 18, and register 10/00 to 39. Those are the only two that change when using set fsb

good call got it upto 1828.1 MHZ now. If I turn Turbo off can I go higher ? Also my memory is upto 1778 mhz running at 889 do I need to change any of my voltages?

If the memory is increasing, it might help to increase voltage to keep it stable. As far as the Turbo, I'm not sure. But I would increase the CPU voltage if you han't already. Then you can try changing the register from 18 to 98. It might crash though, but you never know the limit till you go past it.

As it goes, here's what I've concluded. This is the pattern to the increase in SetFSB. change increases the FSB bit by bit with the following pattern. Not sure where the lower or upper limits are on the 720, but I have one on the way so I should find out soon :D

    33/18
    33/98
    34/18
    34/98
    35/18

Got it upto 39/98 1844.2 MHZ 40/18 it just shut off. The max I seen the turbo boost monitor go upto was 3.12 ghz so pretty decent OC for a 720. Had to increase memory voltage to 1.7 and CPU Vcore up 150mw. After a 20 minute prime test it was stable, but started throttling due to heat. I need to redo my thermal paste :)

Even paste may not help the thermal throttling, what program were you running during the prime test? Also have you tried running it with only a CPU voltage increase and no mem voltage increase? I'd be interested in seeing if the mem voltage increase was nceccesary.

I will give that a try leave it at 1.5 and just raise the CPU voltage I was using Hwinfo32 and HWmonitor to for temps.

EDIT* It crashed with memory at stock voltage raised it to 1.6v and it didn't instacrash gonna run prime see if there are any temp differences

You downloaded the shareware version download the free version

It was stable with a 150MV increase for the CPU and a .1 volt(1.6V) memory but still thermal throttling.

    Here you go

    setfsb_2_2_134_98.zip

It shouldnt ask you to register just un-rar it and run it
then do as DR650SE said and go in increments starting at
    32/18
    32/98
33/18 so forth and so on till you find your max stable clock mine was 39/98 but thermal limit throttling occurs. CPU temps on two cores hit high 90's and the other two are at high 80's
