Looked at youre original config again and 2300 is really good for that config. Just add a blu ray player if you want and youre done.

I dont think it is possible to get it cheaper from the US without coupons.

Ow wait that 2300 is Canadian dollars right? How much would that be in US dollars??

EDIT: ah that would be about 2220 US dollars,

You can buy it from CA for 2450 CAD (with blu ray) that same config costs about 2450 USD.

So yes you got a great deal in CA. If you have a coupon like 20-25% off it might be cheaper getting it from the US. But with tax and shipping you wont win much.

I see, edited my last post.

Lets say you buy that config from the US with a 25% off coupon.

2450 USD-25% is about 1925 USD. Shipping is about 150 USD.

2075 USD without tax. I have no idea how high the tax is in CA if you import elektronics.

If you are going to place that order talk to a rep, might be able to 5% off.

EDIT: See a price of about 1900 in one of your posts, that a no brainer go get it! Dont forget the blu ray.

Mate, don't upgrade the RAM or HDD. Dell is well known for over-chargin for those things, and the customers are allowed to switch them without voiding warranty.

I got 6GB of RAM with my M11x R3, and upgraded to 8Gb of 1600MHZ Kingston HyperX for $64 then sold the original 6GB for $40. Dell wanted more than $120 just for 8Gb of generic Samsung RAM.

Made a system om the CA site with FHD, blu ray, 6990m it comes down to about 2300 CAD.

So it really comes down to if you want 3D or not.

Personaly I would go for the 3D system so you dont have all that Optimus hassle and it has a brighter screen. Battery life wil suck but its a 17 inch gaming notebook so who care's about battery life.

Doc, you are so conflicted about the vid card lol...you want the 580m. i know you do. So instead of getting a 6990m and always second guessing yourself, get the 580m. Its a little more cash but in the end, you will feel good about the purchase (until you create threads on here about your throttling and how to deal with it lol)

im on the phone right now with dell.. i tried reflex reseller but they could not offer the same instant rabate of 625$ that dell offer (its their alienware week).. so i went directly with dell

im on hold since i tried to get myself a free alienware backpack and learn, that i get a corporate rabate too on top of the instant one and the 200$ coupon!

I went for the 580m.. you are right slick, i know i wanted it :)

    2GB GDDR5 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 580M

i'll go complain right now about throttling and buy a tube of Icy Diamond paste! lol

Once again, thank you for helping me (and confuse me, lol) about this purchase.. the deed is done now, cant go back and change video card anymore.. i'll go kick some thugs in arkham city tonight!

holy cow bro! You went all out..you put the SSD in there too? You better be real nice to your gf tonight. Give her a back rub or something and don't complain when she turns on American Idol LOL

You know, the way i see it, it cost you a bundle of cash. But, you're now like a kid in a candy store. Life is short Doc, make yourself happy. That's my philosophy. +/- $1000 isn't going make or break you, but I'm sure you're giddy right now from happiness

    Lâche pas la patate!

just buy it! Be happy! :D

i sure can't complain now.. hahahahaha..
and you are freakin' right about making me happy... totally worth the small wallet setback

do you think i can install easily without totally destroying the M17X, install a secondary storage 750gb scorpio 7200rpm as a secondary drive ?

you'll be able to do that easily. Literally:

    -Take the battery out
-remove back plastic panel (2 screws)
-insert hardrive into harddrive caddy, and plug it into SATA plug
    -Reassemble
(up to this point, you've wasted 10 mins)

    -format in windows

    that's it

What kind of SSD is it? Sata 2 or 3? Samsung?

you know what.. i have no freakin' idea.. tried to get the info on the web site and its not for the advance users.. looks like they only wrote "yeah, its an SSD you know!"

i have no idea other than .. its an 256gb SSD.. probably i should find someone who just bought one on the canadian side and ask

Forgot to thank you for the precision.. looks like a super fast n easy job! i didn't knew if alienware made the chassis of the laptop more complicated than a regular lappy!

So there is 2 Caddies on the M17x ?

    Ya there are 2 caddies

There is one issue that you should be aware of...your SSD is probably SATA3. Sata3 only runs 100% reliably in slot 1 which is in located in the middle of the laptop. The guys at dell probably installed the SSD into slot 0. The first thing i would do is just unplug the SSD and move it to SLot 1, then in the bios change the boot sequence.

In the attached pic, Caddy 1 is circled in YELLOW

    LOL...i completely agree.

i probably will eventually take the plunge into 18" land, but i'm still waiting for next gen CPUs and GPUs. I can't believe that i was pricing out a m18x this morning! My m17x is only 2 months old :D

ok...must have restraint...do NOT push that buy button...must click X on top corner...must go to next Alienware's Anonymous meeting...

But the only thing holding me back is its silly to upgrade to the m18x after just buying my m17x. When the new CPU's and GPu's come, at least I would have a valid reason to do this.

    -Aluminium body (M18x) > rubber coated plastic (M17x R3)
-M18x: the ability to actually take advantage of the extreme CPUs.

Those would be some of them for me if you exclude SLi.

I jedi tricked myself and bought an M17x :(

Tbh M18x is a bit too far. There kinda is a limit, I'd defo look silly with an M18x.. kinda wish M17x R3 supported crossfire though, only thing I am somewhat upset about, but then again we have some fairly nice next gen cards on the way. :)

Very good to know even if i find it hard to beleave that the ssd would be in a not-100% reliable slot from factory if there is one that is better for the job.

So.. its more about the etymology of the word "reliable"... how less reliable exactly ? Does a 7200rpm sata 2.5 hd would be ok (i guess yes) in the slot 0 ? (only a factor with SSDs).

the Problem with Slot 0 is that it often gets confused with SATA2 and SATA3 so you are getting these great speeds on your SSD using SATA3, then suddenly for whatever reason, it goes to SATA2 and your speeds slow down.

BUT with SLOT1, it stays at SATA3 consistently.

If you leave the SSD in the default caddy, it will still work fine, but your speeds might not be as fast as you had expected ;)

for me it would be for 3 things:
    • dual vid cards
    • better CPU cooling
    • larger 18.4"screen
The m18x's from dell are available with XM processors so they have a slightly better cooling solution on the CPU than the m17x's do. Plus of course dual cards is a must if you go with the m18. All the other stuff i don't really care about

I will wait till Ivy Bridge and next gen vid cards are available...then clicking the X at the top right of the browser after configuring a m18x will be very difficult for me to do :D

Thats a good enough reason for me to make the switch..

all i need now is the damn laptop :D

ordered at around 13h yesterday.. my alienware backpack is ready for pickup right now.. took less than 12 hours to ship.

I wonder how long it would take for the m17 to get to me when the dell rep told me it would take 10 days.. 10 business days?.. no clue.. but i think it could be faster and dell give a max range for shipping.

Do you think from what you heard that the thottling problem affect around 50/50 580m users ? we dont hear a lot of people threading/posting about the fact that they dont suffer from it

Everyone with the 580m will suffer from it. It is a 100% guarantee that it will affect you. Just seems that some people have it really bad and others, not so bad. But you can't make what dell put in place magically disappear. You will power throttle at 67c, then you will thermal throttle at 79c.

All you can do is minimize it with the various tricks employed here

I don't know slick, it is 5.5 kgs, on top of that add 0.5 kg for your adapter, there you go, you have half a tower already, go quad sli instead of that (1500 dollars), you will kill anygame in the next 4-5 years... I am glad that AW went lighter instead of sli/crossfirex. I need mobility, otherwise eliminates the whole point, I hope they will somehow keep single GPU but go under 7pounds next release, that would be awesome :)

EDIT: I was choosing between m17x and m18x while buying (SSD+light vs SLi), I am glad I chose m17x, seriously that 1.2 kgs between them is the deciding factor of mobility..

no...avoid IC diamond...it has a severe polishing affect that will permanently alter the surface of the soft copper heatsink overtime. Avoid this one.

Here is a complete list...look at moderate contact for what you can expect from a laptop:

2011 Thermal Compound Roundup – Results Compilation | Skinnee Labs

I do understand the weight concerns. The m18x is a monster. i guess i better start hitting the gym, and get in shape for when this beast eventually comes to my house lol

EDIT: I already have a killer desktop with a core i7 970 hexacore @ 4.4ghz, 12 gigs Gskill PI's, and SLI Nvidia gtx 570's severely overclocked, 2 x 256 M4's etc...but i have a hard time using it because my 5 yr old is on it all the time (LOL that's what i keep telling the wife).

I run a software company...kinda boring stuff. But i treat myself to new computers all the time because you have to enjoy life. i don't want to be a 80 yr old man one day looking back with regrets. Get your toys, buy your cars, enjoy life :D

    thanks dude! :)
