It took me a long while before customer service was able to activate my service tag. After they transferred me to resolutions, they were able to help me over at tech support. I had informed AW tech support of the LCD issue and they told me that according to their test unit, it is common. ( I told him that was unacceptable) He did tell me he would get back to me regarding the LCD issue.

Edit: Oh, the service tag still does not show online, but it does show to the reps on the phone now. Just an FYI.

I called through the Dell EPP number then went to customer service, then they transferred me to resolutions.

    Did you order through EPP?

This is where I started... 800-695-8133. I hope this helps you.

Hi bdkillaz! It is bright enough for me, but I see what some people are saying about it not being bright enough. I guess it is personal preference, but I really have no problem with the brightness. :)

When I am using Internet explorer the back ground since the window is white, appears really bright... The start menu with a white background is washed out and appears gray and washed out... red isnt really red... it appears faded. I dunno if it is an auto contrast that is messing it up... Tried finding something to adjust that.

In games, colored text is washed out and hard to read..

The whole screen on mine isnt lit evenly... I was hoping that after some use it would be ok.. kinda like a burn in but no change at all..

It also seems that Sleey0 has a different Samsung model number on his LCD. Unless I am mistaken. hmmmmm... The light bleed problem is the only REAL issue bothering me. (similar to kilthro's)

Edit: Kilthro, were you able to get your service tag issue settled so that you can contact tech support regarding your screen?

I have a similar problem to Kilthro... the screen looks quite bright when there's white on the screen or if i'm playing a game but when it gets dark the brightness changes darker and it looks washed out but. overall it's not a bad screen. (for me atleast)

Ive seen that on displays before, with bright colours the gamma lifts (it happened to me but stopped somehow)

It probably is auto dimming but for unknown reasons, what about tuning the colours with nvid control panneL?

Tried that still happens. I guess it could be auto dimming then. I've never owned a laptop before lol. Honestly it's really not that bad just kinda weird.

Hmm strange, well ATI control centre (after having tuned my screen in there) sets up when the catalyst is running, so if catalyst crashes during boot up, my screen wont change gamma/contr/hue and sat etc, you get the point.

What about disabling the NVIDIA control pannel in msconfig after tweaking some of its settings?

you would think that if it is white (bright background) it would dim and then on darker screens it would brighten itself to keep it poppin.

    The exact opposite happens ...

My 50" SXRD does the same thing with the Iris.

It is that way so that details in dark scenes come out by lowering brightness.

i had the auto brightness thing on a work monitor i was using for a lil while (NES). hated it. at least that was easily changeable with the panel button menus.

i also switch off the 'ambient light sensing' auto-brightness on any laptop i'm using. it gets thrown off when your fingers come near the sensor (qwerty row and numbers) depending on where it's positioned.

lol, i imagine the combination of both of these would be very annoying if they don't work well.

I don't think a sensor is controlling it though. I have tried covering everywhere around the bezel and it doesn't do anything. Only when you go from something very white/bright to, say, your desktop with a dark AW background.

It seems like some built in crap that detects the brightness on-screen and adjusts accordingly.

    It is very annoying......

So the auto stuff is sofware related?
I thought it would be built into the screen some how..

If that is the case I will wipe it clean and start over.. it is worth it to me to get rid of that dumb auto contrast.....

I did try covering up the eye and nothing changed.. its like it reads what is detected on the screen.

umm...yes, the auto brightness is screen content related (it's changing brightness of the screen even though ambient lighting remains the same). the generic dimming for ambient light could stopped by covering the 'eye', i think.

2 causes for the screen brightness auto changing, want to stop both.

Sounds like dynamic contrast. Some TVs have it, the backlight changes dynamically to try and increase the contrast ratio.

I can't say I have ever seen it on a laptop.

I covered the eye with no results..

Its something that it is doing when a dark vs light image is displayed...

Crash your display driver is all i can say lol, i have this on my machine *occasionally* when colour settings, brighness and contrast are tweaked quite hard and i notice when the display driver stops working so do all the settings, Is there some kind of service/app associated to nvidia?

It would be kew if there was a monitor driver specifically for the lcd that could disable that.. or in nvidia ..

I just havent been able to locate it.

possible to be in a firmware chip that runs the lcd?

I went to hulu.com and when im viewing a video the top of the page is a bit darker and the bottom of the page has a lot of white and if you scroll up and down it you can see the screen changing the brightness. It's kindof trippy lol.

when i experienced that auto adjustment thing, it was with daylight coming in, in a well lit office and still annoyed the crap outta me. can only be worse in a dark setting which is how i'll be using the M17x 70% of the time.

The good thing is that there is an option for adaptive display dimming in the command center. So it shouldn't be too hard for AW to whip up a fix for it :)

This thread is quite old, but...Dell just gave me a system exchange for my XPS M1730. My replacement (M17x w/ WUXGA 1200p screen) DEFINITELY has a dimmer screen than my XPS had. Under office lights the dimmer screen is noticeable and a bit aggravating. Did anyone come up with a final verdict on this subject? I can't find anything that makes mention of an auto-dimming screen. Advice is appreciated.
