Go Scook! I'm with you!![]()

So babyhemi is selling 5870's and i want to know if its going to work with my M17x? Yes i don't truly like the Core i7 turbo boost hyper threading, i feel cheated that they made such an amazing processor for desktops but for mobile ones they kinda cheated us here, that's why i have been thinking of the good old QX9300 as a great processor upgrade.
-
I'm not sure if HP still selling those for 500$, but surely you can get one for a similar price on Ebay.
So, no more HP workstations?
-
Well still in decision mode here, don't truly want to spend a lot of money, what you wanted me to sway my opinion, one of the main reasons why i want the Elitebook is the WEIGHT!!! The M17x is very difficult for me to carry around, i have a curved spine already, slightly don't want to make it worse, plus i am afraid to take it to school with me, i don't want to jacked! LOL The workstation is still up in the air though. I don't even know if its going to work.
-
Take some time to think.
You might even want to look at some ultra-thin thingies
I'd not bring AW or HP to school. -
Um not core 2 duo solo or S7300 for me that is what the latitude is for! I have brought my precision M6400 to school a few times and to starbucks etc.. I wouldn't care i would bring my HP Elitebook to school, its just the current state of tech and the economy is getting a bit ignorant and stupid how things are and how much things are being rushed out and then so many throttle and flickering problems you know? Getting a bit tired of spending money on comps and then being outdated like right away lol No M11x!
-
OK, this is what i was looking for, this is for the Asus G51J (nice laptop by the way):

So thats why i am not that happy about Turbo Boost. And the why i am not that sure about i7 620M beating the i7 720QM in games. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
That "super overclocking mode" looks like Turbo Boost lol
And they realized what everyone else is....it is a marketing thing that companies just use to advertise as a 2.8 GHz quad core (Micro Center was doing this until I pointed it out to them they will have a lot of unhappy customers) -
by the way, what the hell happened to the 1333 mhz ram on the alienware website? they don't show up in the customization : /
-
I think you can only pick it with a Quad core chip.
-
Here is a nice review of Core i7 vs Core 2 Quad "in games":
http://www.insidehw.com/Reviews/CPU/Gaming-Performance-Core-i7-vs-Core-2-Quad.html
In the conclusion you can say that it is more importan the GPU (in case you don't have all money of the world).
But i can't find a comparative of those processors in mobile world, but maybe that would be something similar.
I really want to see competitives mobile processors from AMD!! -
Does it have usb 3.0 ?
then would like to now how much u want for it
Anyone know if Aleinware coming out with a
new Laptop with 5870s & Usb 3.0 ?
anytime soon
-
1) Only the newest Elitbooks have the USB 3.0 (eg. 8740w). Lenovo's have it as well (W510, W701) as Dell Precision (M6500, M4500).
2) Nobody knows for sure, but we all hope...
-
Well if you're not using your express card slot already...

Hi,
I received m17x a week ago and I reinstalled Windows 7 on the computer.
I installed drivers and BIOS by following the order of installation from Alienware website.
The problem is that whenever I have my computer on, whether browsing the web or idling, the fan is always on.
According to CPUID Hardware monitor, CPU temperature is around 40 C (104F), system temperature is 42 C (107F), and GPU temperature is 46 C (114F).
Is this normal behaviour, if so, what can I do to control fan noise?
Thanks -
sounds about right to me.As far as fan noise I point to Kade Storms sig."Don't like gaming laptops with loud fans? Get yourself a pink macbook and step out of the closet, you diva!" - Personal statement to the whine-rack.
-
Psychotic deformity Notebook Consultant
ahaha that's true in a sense, but i gotta agree that the CPU fan noise can be annoying on my R1. Truth be told, i expected it to stop spinning when stealth mode was enabled... how is it stealthy when you can hear the machine humming from 5 meters away?
-
I actually like the fan noise. It tells me that my computer is working and working hard.
-
Psychotic deformity Notebook Consultant
so when its doing nothing it tells you what? that its doing nothing really hard?

I noticed this morning you are not able to have a customized plate with your name on the Dell.com website for the M17X.
I just tried three times, talked to a rep online and he states it must be a website error. I guess that's good news... -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
that customized plate adds like 2 weeks to your order time though
you can just get it done after the fact -
yup. Kinda clues me into the thermal state of the cards and cpu
-
What?
I have never heard of the nameplate adding 2 weeks.
You alright, scook? lol -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I heard people saying that choosing that option made the order take longer because they had to wait for it to be engraved
Is heresay on my part but I thought was the case (mine was just regular "M17x" lol - and I was 12 days from order to receiving at house) -
HW monitor does not put the GPU temps for my 4870's crossfire. What am I doing wrong?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Nothing, no one has mobility 4870s read by that program
use everest, gpu-z, or HWInfo -
Thanks......
-
Everest may crash your system (it does in my case, others reported it as well) HWinfo32 works like a charm.
-
I am not sure where to ask this question but here is what is happening:
The GPU fans go to full speed when playing WOW, temperature monitor states 58 degrees celcius and load is 78% on GPU 1, GPU 2 temperature 49 degrees celcius and load is 12%. There is no way the fans should be at full speed at that temperature. I verified no other program was running. Not sure what to do. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I have had the fans get stuck at full before, just restarted and was set
Also do you have the latest BIOS? -
Yep, I have the latest BIOS which is A03. This is a relatively new thing on my PC and I formatted but yet still fan at full power below 60 degrees celcius.
-
anyone got bad like 12 -20 fps on just cause 2? ive tired the beta drivers 197,31 beta, and its still really bad! duno whats up with my comp seems sluggish! or is it just this game? i have the M17x r1 quad, 280 x2 4 gig ram
-
I have an i7-920XM for sale
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
It will sell alot better with a price

Here is an interesting article about GTX 280M SLI vs Mobility Radeon HD 4870 CrossfireX.

Ok, it will be a long ship till here (Chile), and i must pay almost 1000 dollars only in taxes, the government charge to me 19% of item value in taxes, plus 100 dollars, extra becauses the item value is over 1000 dollars. This sucks...
So this laptop is going to cost to me... 2800 dollars
PS: I can't find this laptops here, Dell Chile doesn't offer GTX 280M SLI, only 4870 CrossfireX -

That site (and article) was done by Lewdvig. An active member here
-
Is actually really good site. This guy has a really good point there, we don't play benchmarks, we play games, so it doesn't really matters what 3dmark 2006 says... So in most games GTX 280M SLI beats the HD 4870 CrossfireX, so thats why i am staying with nvidia for the moment.
-
I appreciated his commentary - kind of a "what was it like to 'use' these products" point of view.
Anyway - looking forward to the R3
-
Weeks ago when I first started looking into the M17x, it was configurable with 2 hard drives (was interested in 128GB SSD & 500GB 7200rpm), now that I'm about ready to buy (when the 5870's come out), the website only allows more than one hard drive in RAID config. Anybody know if its still possible to get the 2 different hard drives?
-
You guys should check the site, they released the m17x with 5870, but it doesnt give a dual option yet.
-
I hope they have something to address the amount of heat a dual 5870 will be generating. Sounds like it could be a cheap way for birth control !
-
I thought the Ati mobility radeon HD 5870 will be cooler than the Ati mobility radeon HD 4870 (we need shorter names for those cards any way), besides the mobility radeon HD 5870 is only 60 watt TDP (i guess).
I think is a stock problem, i think at the moment there are not enough mobility radeon hd 5870. -
i thought the dual 5870 wasnt out in the US yet?
-
Man, can anyone actually get a straight answer out of dell on if/when they plan on releasing crossfire 5870's as an option?
No way to treat customers when we're spending as much as we are on their products. -
I'm sure if they had a straight answer to give it would be out there. Considering they aren't selling XF 5870s besides as a non-advertised special order it's best to just wait.
.
.
.
Yeah, that's totally not what anyone wants to hear but it is the truth.
-
I want to get an M17x for travel purposes. I would mainly be using it for photo editing and general PC use on the go and very little gaming, if any (I have my desktop for that). I like the M17x because it's one of the few 17" laptops with the option for 1200p resolution versus the 1080p resolution I'm seeing now in 17" laptops. Plus I love the build quality, and I'm very happy with my current laptop I'm upgrading from, the XPS M1710. I don't want to spend too much money on it, so would you guys recommend the i7 620m or the 720qm? From reading, it looks like the 620m is better for games and the 720qm would be a better option for overall PC use. What do you guys think? Thanks!
-
I'll just be the first to say that this sucker is HEAVY. You aren't using it on the go are you? Just when you get where you're going and such, right?
-
I know, it might be overkill getting this laptop and not using it primarily for games, but I have been buying the XPS brand notebooks for a few years now and am very happy with all of them. The M17x is pretty much the only option from Dell with a 17" screen at the full 1200p resolution (plus I get a big discount on Dell's through my company so I want to stick with the brand). The kind of travel I meant was vacations and business travel, primary use at my place of lodging, not on the airplane and such. I don't expect to use the battery much
-
Don't be surprised if they don't give you a discount. I also have discounts through my company and my Dell Rep. said that because Alienware is still considered separate from Dell. My Rep can't even quote an Alienware for me.
