Sorry to hear about your problems with the R2. I will try running BF3 on my father's R2 , to see if i get issues. He has a 4870 CF + 720QM configuration.

Could you tell me what drivers you are running on your R1 , and what processor and RAM do you have? It's interesting to hear you're getting no FPS drops on a similar system to mine.

i've just been wondering.........wheres the Hyperthreading option in BIOS? I'm on the A10 unlocked for M17x-R2 and i swear i can't find it anywhere under performance and cpu options......wanted to try it out and see if it helps

I've been looking at the perfoverlay graph in BF3 and i have major CPU spikes

I'm curious as to how it runs on your dads R2. I have the same specs as his, but mine runs absolutely abysmally. i have all my settings on low, in 1280x768 and i get from 80 fps, down to 22...the fluctuations are rediculous. I've tried every single tweak guide i can find. I've come to the conclusion that my system is far too crap to run this game. I seem to recall it running far better on a previous ATI driver revision, but I can't remember which ones. I'm running the new 12.1's now...and it's no better.

They pretty much patched everything except the "MAV Elevation Glitch" which i believe it is part of the game. As for "sandboxing Origin" i'm not sure what you mean. Playing online without Origin is excluded, the whole Battlelog system is designed to function with Origin.

I just downloaded BF3 yesterday ( was on sale for $40). I've had my M17X for about 3+ weeks. From what I'm reading, there seems to be some needed patches yet. Game runs fine on ultra with AA @ 4x except I'm getting random lockups. I have to go to task manager & end program, then restart it. Is it the program, or is it something I need to do with my rig? I have not seen any throttling problems yet. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!!!

I cant even play the game. I get to battlelog and click "multiplayer" or "campgain" and it starts up and says "initializing" or "joining server' but thats it. It does nothing more than that. I have yet to be able to play. I also have updated my drivers I believe. (the catalyst 12.2 preview ones)

Doesn't sound like a GPU or driver issue to me, it sounds like it's not even launching the game.

Have you installed the browser plugin? Which browser are you using? (try another).

Thats exactly what it was. I was using Google Chrome and apparantly battlelog didnt like it. I switched to firefox and it runs perfectly.

Getting 40-50 fps everything high and textures ultra with AA on. This is a beautiful game!

I've used Chrome since the moment I installed BF3. There was a recent Game Launcher browser plugin update. You maybe should run that again.

Is anyone currently having, or has anyone had frame rate issues with the 6990M? I find that my game constantly has lag style FPS drops and it pretty much makes the game unplayable. If anyone has experience this, have you been able to fix it?

Yes actually. Today it was perfect and running smooth. I get on lunch break from work to play a couple games (this is at 3am est US time) and I find the game unplayable. I tried different size maps (32 vs 64)..no difference. I tried different graphics settings medium vs high vs ultra...NO difference.

The multiplayer is running very "laggy" and "choppy" and sometimes my gun disappears. This is so strange because earlier today it was running just fine. I have all 8 cores running this game, so idk..

edit: My drivers are also brand new and up to date. I am running the 12.2 preview drivers for ATI.

Hi Everyone, I just got my Alienware M17x R3 recently at IT Show.

    My Alienware M17x r3 Spec:
    Intel® Core™ i7 2860QM (2.5GHz,3.6GHz with Turbo Boost, 8MB Cache)
    16GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600MHz (4DIMMS)
    2GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M
    DirectX Version: DirectX 11
    GPU Temperature: 60°C (gpu-z)

I try playing BF3 and when i launch the game it runs smoothly but after playing for a few minute i get horrendous lag for a like 1-2min, it happen around every 8min of playing when the lag spike would happen. I had on the fps (render.DrawFps 1) my fps for high setting is between 50-70, but all of a sudden is will drop to 8-12 fps.

I had try Ultra/High/Medium it still happen. My laptop is brand new is just a week old only. :(

Please anybody have any ideas on what to do?

I have maxed out all of the video settings, and still have had NO freezes. I am still playing the campaign. I am aware of server problems in Co Op that will still potentially cause lock ups until they are resolved.

Hi WTHesing, do you have any special setting on the Alienware Fusion at the Alienware Command Center? I had try to Maxing out the video setting and the game still run smooth just that the fps will have sudden drop after playing for some time.

Is it due to the intel gpu card?

@LeonBoi, you are experiencing throttling. What you need to do is perform the throttlefix in my sig.

Hi widezu69, i not really a computer expert but i will try the guide to fix the throtting. By the way will it affect other game?

Question: can i know what the meaning of "throtting"?
what does P1/P0 and Shader mean?

really sry as I'm afraid of editing wrong thing.

Throttling happens for two reasons, either your card is drawing too much power at around 65C, it will drop to the P1 power state, or your card has heated to 78C. P0 and P1 are different stages of clock speeds, P0 is the top performance one and P1 is a clocked down one.

The nvidia GPU is split into 3 clocks speeds: core clock, shader clock (always twice as fast as core clock) and memory clock. If you aren't very computer savvy, don't worry about it. Just perform the throttlefix using the 580m.rom file you'll be good to go :)

I'm not trying to jinx myself, but have been checking core & GPU temps after shutting down BF3. I haven't seen anything above 62C on the GPU - running everything ultra, AA @ 4X. I am a little lower when using my Cryo laptop cooler (3 - 5" fans). I got this cooler, as I had a high end HP that really got hot. This rig is its replacement.

Well that's good hear. By the way, for better BF3 frame rates, turn AA down to 2x, and use Post AA @Medium. It gives great picture and less performance hit.

Hi widezu69, the Dell engineer will be coming down my house tomorrow to change the graphic card. If the problem persist, do i need to reflash the 580m.rom?

By the way i saw some forum thread talking about AA @4x/2x, what does that mean? Can nvidia inspector edit that??

@LeonBoi, there is nothing wrong with your graphics card. Everybody experiences the throttling, it is built into the system bios. After your card gets replaced I would suggest reflashing the rom. When playing a game, monitor your temperatures, you will still throttle if you hit 78C.

Also AA 4x/2x are ingame settings that can be change in the options menu of Battlefield 3.

    Hey hidz!

I've been using Saphhire Trixx to OC my 2 5870s, just as you suggested, for quite a while now, and all has been GREAT until I updated the card drivers to Catalyst 12.3 today.

None of the last 3 versions of Sapphire Trixx seem to allow me to OC my cards anymore :(

Is there another app you, or anyone else could suggest to OC my cards? That extra bit of power I can get out of them from the OC really does make a noticeable diff in BF3!

    THX! <3

just incase anyone was having the same issues.
im running an m17xr2 with an 820qm 4gigs of ram and dual 6990's
everytime the map would change on vanilla i would crash
replaced the ram and bumped it to 8 gigs.
    - loading times have dramatically improved
    - no more crashing YAY!

has anyone else noticed a drop in framerate after the new patch
    i went from a pretty solid 60fps to 45ish

Sorry for the late reply, I haven't visit this forum for quite a while now.
Regarding the overclock, Im only using 12.2 Catalyst and have no problem overclocking it, but I haven't try 12.3. Maybe I try later and have a look how it goes, but if anybody know what is wrong maybe you guys can help us out! :)

    Hey hidz.

I read over on the GURU3D forums that 12.3 does something to the registry that disables OCing - I think the ULPS (ultra low power state that needs to be disabled for OCing), power saving feature thingy can't be disabled as a result... or something to do with power saving (which incidentally also messed around loads with my second GPU clocks and fan speeds @idle... sometimes the clocks would be 405 and 1000 and other times 0 and 0 with a horrible idle temp, whereas pre 12.3 they'd sit comfortably @ 100 and 150).

Anyway - someone stated how to edit specific registry entries to get around that, but quite honestly, it's stupid hassle and I've just gone back to using 12.1 :p

AMD sure do like to mess people around with their drivers. Seems like the mobility guys always get a lil more messed around than the desktop'ers.

Anyway, thanks again for informing me of Trixx... I've seen many GPU intensive games smooth out just that lil bit that makes all the diff! Appreciated brother!

It's because they added AlienFX support. It will flash red when you are low on health and blue/orange (I think) when you respawn.

AW lighting was integrated into the game in the last patch, or the patch before (I forget which).

Its supposed to give you more situational awareness... Like, when you are wounded, the keyboard will blink red. I believe you can turn it off, though... Some people don't like it.
