    Thx :)

How do use trixx to oc CF 5870?
I tried but couldn't find any options to up the voltage (it is inactive).
On the standard voltage it gains only 20mhz more. Or maybe I do sth wrong. It's my first CF setup ;)

Voltage option is inactive for me too (I think I remember reading somewhere how to activate it tho). Anyway, I could set the clock to 800 / 1100 like hidz7 without touching that. Dunno why you would not be able to do the same.
on Trixx settings, I only have the box "sync both card" (or somlething like that) checked, all the rest unchecked.
Do you have the same settings ?

I think you need to tick 'Disable ULPS' as well, or it won't function properly for CF setup if I am not mistaken.
And I didn't mess anything with the voltage setting, as I am afraid that I might fry my cards.LOL :D

1.15v won't be enough to fry the cards, and is the limit the vbios will allow. All should be good provided you have clean vents and monitor temps. But I believe if you flash the vbios with the stock vbios again, it will unlock it. I think anyhow. Been a while since I missed with my 5870's

Wow! This game looks incredible on the m17x. I am hoping a member on the forum will be selling me his old m17x pretty soon! Any news on whether or not the dx10 texture bug has been resolved yet? I don't want crumby performance and ugly txtures just because of some software bug!

That's because you have the gtx500 series. Which is dx11. I hear its a problem with video cards that don't support dx11 and only run dx10 :( maybe someone can follow up on this for me? I hope an update will be released soon. It looks as though ea and nvidia both had big updates coming out this week to sort out several problems users are experiencing!

I found that the best picture is achieved if you set AA deferred to 2x, and AA post to medium. It will hardly affect performance on a 580m plus OC'ing it to 800/900 is enough to run those settings fluidly :)

Yeah from my tests, medium gives the best picture. Smooths out the jaggies but doesn't overblur the picture. You have good settings there. I play with Motion Blur on full because it doesn't bother me that much and it smooths out the quick pans when you turn around.

    Hey brother.

Upon reading your previous posts, I O/C'ed my 5870Ms to 1100/800 using Trixx - BF3 ran noticably smoother! A solid 40-60 vsynced fps!

BUT - my biggest problem with the game remains... it stutters/lags like crazy every so often, before correcting itself and running perfectly again (and like I said, that perfectly is now smoother since the O/C). That occasional but consistent stutter really hurts gameplay :(

Do you have any idea why that stutter happens and how I may be able to fix it? I noticed my temps in GPUZ hitting the mid-80s (after OC). The cards aren't being throttled somehow, are they? And if they are, can I use Trixx or something to stop that?

ALSO - do you change the GPU voltage or leave it as it is?

TY SO MUCH for the heads-up! :)

    Hi wonderpookie,
yes I OCed both of my GPUs to 800core clock, 1100 memory clock.
I didn't mess anything with the voltage and just leave it as it is.

Regarding the stutter, have you install the latest driver and CAP profile?
Because before this I also experience stutter with CAP3 profile.
    Hope that helps. :)

    I've tried every driver and CAP combo since 11.8. 11.11 and 11.11a caused me to BSOD upon reboot. In fact, after the 11.11a install, I couldn't even get back to 11.10 or 11.9 without BSOD'ing despite a clean driver install (driver sweeper et al). In the end what saved me were the modded 11.11 drivers (rumoured to be 12.1 drivers by some) over at GURU3D that were linked in a thread over here;

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...rs-horrible-bsod-somewhat-workaround-now.html

These modded drivers are great and these plus 11.11 CAP2 are the best for BF3 for me thus far.

I have the same system as you except with the 840QM. I've heard that turning off hyperthreading helps things but I can't see this option in BIOS.

What temps do your cards hit? GPUZ is telling me 88oC, which seems pretty high to me, so I keep thinking something is getting throttled that causes my game to suddenly drop huge fps and stutter/lag. My CPU temps don't seem to go higher than low 70s in comparison.

    Thanks for the reply brother!

After repasted with IC Diamond 7 to both GPUs, now my 5870s never go beyond 75C. The highest I see from HWinfo64 is just 74C.
Have you tried reapply the thermal paste?

I am not so sure regarding the cause of BSOD as I never encountered that problem before. But have you tried uninstalling the CAP?
When using CAP3 last time, it caused stutter, but after uninstalling the CAP, the stutters gone.

I've never dared open up my Alienware! I'm not confident enough to go around messing inside there I fear :p Blowing out the dust from the vents with my mouth is about as much cleaning as I have ever done!

I just GPU-Z'ed BF3 again. Now I may be reading the numbers wrong... but they seem to suggest that firstly one of the sensors reads 115oC(!!!) and when this happens, the memory and gpu clocks immediately fall back down to 300 and 400 respectively. This coincides with my stutter/lag. Then once the temps go down a bit, the clocks go back to 800 and 1100... until the temp hits 115oC again.

Firstly - is 115oC normal? ... even possible? Am I reading my numbers wrong? :D Even before I OC'ed I would get this stuttering remember - the only difference now is that the game runs smoother in between the moments the stutter and lag hits.

RE: caps - stutter/lag happens with and without CAPs installed.

    Thanks for the reply brother!

115*C is definitely not normal! I had those sorts of temps when I first got mine and I re-pasted straight away. The difference was huge and now I barely crack 80*C.

I definitely recommend a re-paste. Don't be too scared about opening up your Alien. I had never done it before but the guides around this forum were perfect and all I needed to do the job well.

What Rypac said is true, you need to reapply the thermal paste or at least clean it. I think that caused your overheating problem.
Have a look at the guide, or maybe find someone you can trust to do that. :)

I cleaned the (bottom intake) vents by blowing out the dust using my mouth :D... and sat the lappy on top of a book leaving clear the two gfx card vents. The temps immediately feel to 95oC stock and 105oC O/C'ed. I now no longer experience a down clocking of the cards during gameplay and all stutter/lag is gone.

Wow. What a difference a lil dust makes, huh?

I'm guessing from your replies though that 95oC-105oC is still on the abnormally hot side of things (CPU by comparison never breaks 80oC). So... I shall man-up and re-paste as suggested.

I really appreciate all the help and advice offered by you guys. +rep to all, TY! <3

Hopefully your overheating problem will be solved soon, it's normal to be afraid when opening up the laptop for the first time.
Take your time, do it slowly, and you'll experience a huge drop in temperature once you clean and reapply the thermal paste.
    Good luck! :)

I know, right. There was a ridiculous amount of dust built up in mine when I opened her up. In the vents, fans, heatsink... it was everywhere!

You will feel alot of satisfaction when you man-up and re-paste. :)
I felt very overwhelmed the first time I opened it up and re-pasted but the guides and good folks here got me through it! I found that if I ever had a question, someone else had already asked it and an answer had been provided.

Goodluck and if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Did you play any BF3 after the patch but before the new RAM?

Did you change your video card drivers?

    Could all be possible reasons

Most likely it is the patch. If you want to find out for sure, put your old RAM back in play for a few hours and then put new RAM in and play for few hours.

@ everyone with the stuttering problem.

i was running 4870mx2 and had some really bad stuttering, and watching these huge spikes in my cpu/gpu usage causing them
(use the command draw.perfoverlayvisible 1) to see
i wiped the drivers, full unintstall and slapped 11.10 with 11.11 cap2 and really helped out.

i have since upgraded to 6990's and i am currently using the dell beta drives
(sorry i dont have the link handy but it in the m18x forum)
and its baby smooth. fps is pretty constant and the graph is very stable.

Hm Yes I am suddenly getting strange black screens in BF3 that won't go away.

Basically it's when you play a game successfully with a few drops here and there (even with Cap2) and it's fine. It goes to the score screen (the screen inbetween the games) and then it counts down to 0, then moves to a new screen and usually it's another loading screen. More often than not however, it seems that it's a Black Screen that doesn't go away now. Left it there for 10 minutes, same black screen. Wonder why?
