Mine arrived 2 days after I requested it from Alienware Europe. That was a bit ago, of course. Just make sure to call Alienware Tech support, not customer support or oders.

I didn't receive a hard drive caddy with my M17x, I called Alienware as posted earlier in the thread, followed the directions given, and my caddy should be here in 2 business days. Piece of cake.

Just got my laptop today, ordered it with 1 drive, no second drive cage.

I called and ordered, took about 10 minutes, not hassle, no fuss. They are sending to me for free.

Cool got my HDD caddy today, spoke to a couple reps at Dell and they assured me the 99.99 showing as the price of the part Dell shipped is not actually going to be charged to me, so I'm happy.

does anyone know how large of a hard drive will fit in the second caddy? western digital just released two new mobile 2.5" HDs (750gb and 1tb) but apparently they are 12.5mm instead of the usual 9.5mm. i assume they won't fit in the m17x?

whether it will fit the m17x or not, who knows, but they are for notebooks.
towards the bottom of the page there is an asterisk that explains about their notebook compatability.

the issue would be their height making them too big to fit moo, the 2.5" isn't the problem

The 2.5" HDDs with 12.5mm height will only fit laptops that have room for them, which most don't. I did have one old laptop where 12.5mm drives did fit, but on the others they didn't.
I don't know about the M17x. It would be nice if they'd fit, but probably not or only with some modding.

I haven't been on these forums for about 2 weeks, and I ordered my M17x on 7/31 and it will be delivered on tuesday. I see that there was a post from someone who received their system on 8/5 and it didn't have a 2nd caddy, so has there actually been confirmation of receiving a 2nd caddy with the computer?

Moo told me before I ordered that mine will likely ship with a 2nd caddy included, but looking in this thread I haven't really seen anyone who got one with it already included.

So can anyone confirm that they are really shipping with a 2nd caddy included yet?

Well I guess it's not too bad then...

But does anyone know if it is possible to get a 2nd HD installed without the special caddy? For example, could I use part of the caddy from my M1710 and use the interposer from an 2.5" external enclosure that I have and get that to work in the M17x? Or are there screws that must be installed for it to hold in place? I remember Moo saying at some point that he got his to work using only 1 screw or something...

If that is possible would getting the interposer from the enclosure to the other caddy be very complicated?

Well it's good that they are at least shipping them out fast, I guess I'd rather wait a day then try to do something that might not work at all....

I currently don't have my cell phone (lost it somehwere :( ) and don't have a landline so I don't know if I will be able to call for a few days until I get a new phone, so does anyone know if it is possible to get Dell to ship you one by email? Possibly by emailing the order support guys?

    Yeah.

I went with a small but VERY fast SSD (Corsair X32). It uses Samsung flash and the Indilinx Barefoot controller.

I got it from Dell with a 15% coupon for like $150 so I figured it would be good enough to hold me over about 6 months. lol

I'll use it for the OS install only, and use the 250GB drive for apps and games.

Ah. sounds good bro. I am more on the practical side then on the benchrunner side I guess. 32GB would be way too little for me. 1TB is just too sweet to pass by (Non-raided of course). The day I get a SSD would be when they are "affordable" at 500GB or AT LEAST $150-$200 dollars less.

I don't mind waiting the extra seconds it takes to load from a mechanical HD.

What I really would have liked is the Blu-ray. Connecting my M17x to my Sony Bravia HDTV is damn awesome.

Wait, what was this thread about?

    ^

Too funny w/ the last comment :D

You'll notice a difference not only in boot times but in everything else.

I'm only using it for the OS and I could slot in my 500GB drive that I have at the house for my apps and stuff.

After I set up my Raid 0 I noticed a dramatic increase in Winrar extraction times as well as moving files around. I can only imagine how much better a SSD would be *drools* but for me they are just to expensive to justify the small increase in performance. Like WaR I would rather a large capacity 7,200 rpm drive over a small capacity SSD.

Oh yeah. A lot of space is just awesome. I have my top UFC fight videos et cetera no problem. And yes, by loading I meant everything, apps, unrar, and all. I know the reliability and speed a SSD provides but the price per space is just stupid.

Don't get me wrong I wish I had a SSD, what I don't wish is a <250GB drive, or a $500 SSD in exchange for my soul.

Oh yeah the second HDD bracket rules

Is there a big speed difference between the corsair, and the 250GB samsung SSD that Dell offers with the system?

I'm guessing there must be if you're using the samsung as a secondary drive

I didn't get the samsung SSD with my system (just the 250GB 7.2k RPM drive).

I didn't have an extra $400 or I would have gotten the Samsung :)

I just bought a smaller corsair extreme (should be comparable to the samsung in terms of performance) because I wanted speed without a huge price.

Bringing back a post from a long time ago....

I just did the same thing, but I didn't include the billing info... did you send your credit card info to them in the e-mail? I just said that if it is necessary, they should use the same payment option as my computer order. Hopefully that will work but I also said in the e-mail that they should e-mail back if it won't work for some reason...?

Just a question for anyone who got their 2nd bracket through e-mail:

Did you ever get an email reply from Alienware saying that one would be shipped to you or did they just send one? I sent an email to [email protected] almost 36 hours ago with all my information (except billing, I told them to email me back if they need it) and I haven't received any sort of reply. Is this what happened for you guys?

Well I just scanned over this whole thread and it looks like Beardog was the first to get it by email, and right after that Moo said he put in an emai and his next post said his shipped the next monday or something, and I dont think he mentioned calling AW so it may have worked by email for him too. Neither of them said anything about an email response though, but one person did say they got an email back telling them to call AW support.

I haven't been able to call because of a broken phone but hopefully I'll be getting my new one tomorrow so if I dont get an email (or possibly my 2nd bracket?) tomorrow then I'll probably just call.

It took them well over 2 weeks to get my get HD cage and they were calling me every 2 days from customer care apologizing that i didnt have it yet . I give them massive props for following up the way they did and when it was all said and done they also gave me a $50.00 coupon for all the time i spent trying to procure said item .
