I sort of get the impression that it's made for a laptop that's in a padded sleeve.

Dang. I'm very disappointed that Slappa too, makes unpadded items... I don't see myself recommending their stuff to any of my pals, sadly :( Honestly, how much does it cost to add more padding to backpacks/cases/bags?

I ended up going with a Pelican 1495 case. Just the plain one that has nothing inside but foam. This will work for my specific needs, but certainly isn't a good solution for someone that needs to carry it around much.

It's giving me a decent amount of foam in a nearly crush-proof, waterproof container. I'll post some pictures once I get a chance to take some.

The handle on my Brenthaven broke a few months back, and I recently registered for warranty. They're going to send me a new one (Brenthaven XF, which is the closest thing to my current one) for free. Will update as soon as I receive it.

I actually spent two hours reading this thread from beginning to end. It was quite an entertaining read to say the least.

After thinking about it some more, I'm thinking about going with the Slappa Velocity Pro Matrix. My budget is in the 100 dollar price range, but for the Matrix... I'm willing to spend a 10 spot more.

I will carry around my computer once in a while... maybe a few times a month, so I don't really need the surplus room the MASK offers. I live in Japan, so on occasion I will travel with laptop in tow when visiting family back in America or taking a trip around Japan.

I also like the Velocity Pro Matrix's look. I know it's not professional-looking, but we have Alienware M17x laptops (of course, not your normal laptop), and I think the edginess of the backpack fits the M17x style IMO.

Having been caught in a typhoon once with a crappy Jansport backpack, I completely understand the need for a waterproof backpack... something the Matrix touts. It rains a lot out here, so that alone would be a great benefit to me.

Also, I want this backpack to become my primary backpack for just my study books, but I want the available option to bring along my laptop. I usually carry around 5+ Japanese language textbooks. For the current/former Velocity Pro owners... do you think this backpack, if used most times as a schoolbook backpack, is a good replacement for the more traditional school backpacks out there? I'm 5'7", slim but not a twig.

Thanks for any advice. If I get this backpack, you bet I'll post my 2 centavos.

Anyone know of a $50 dollar or less messenger bag that I can purchase? I've already shelled out quite a bit for the laptop, and I don't plan on taking it around with me too often.

I just need something cheap and handy to be able to transport this bad boy.

Yeah Everki is good, I went with:
Beacon Laptop Backpack w/Gaming Console Sleeve, fits up to 18" | Laptop Accessories | Everki

And am very happy with it. I just removed the console sleeve, will probably never use it but doesn't hurt to have. Plenty of room and nice soft padding in the laptop section. Decent price too.

You could possible use the m18x Orion bag with the m17x right, or will it be too big?

I use a Targus Voyager backpack which fits the M17x-r3 perfectly. It has moderate padding on all sides including the bottom.

How good is the Mobile Edge Alienware M17x Orion bag? I'm planning to purchase one, but was wondering the overall quality and for the price you would pay.

Has anyone here looked into Booq? Ive owned my Boa Nerve L for a couple years now & it's sustained the elements without showing any wear.

If that's the same one I saw in person at REI, then it's too small for the R3. Very nice looking design though, I must admit.

It's good, if you can get it for cheap. Holds alot and is very comfortable with the default "padding." NOTE: Add padding to the base if you care about your toys.

Anyone have the Swissgear Pegasus or the Swissgear Ibex or the Slappa Velocity ?? can you comment on them?? Are they roomy enough for the laptop + college books?? How do they compare with the Orion??

I used a $50 dollar coupon that I got from my sales dude and the Canada day savings offer, which got me the m17x Orion backpack for 35$ after taxes and shipping.

I'll let you guys know if it's as good as it's believed to be. I bought it about 6 hours ago and still haven't gotten a confirmation email though :S.

Someone on this thread mentioned the Swissgear Pegasus as a very tight fit... probably not a good idea for m17x. The Ibex is smaller than the Pegasus from what I heard. It's unfortunate because that was one of my first choices. I especially like the Pegasus' look and the construction of the backpack.

There have been a few posts about the Velocity Matrix already. They say it fits but the computer is slightly exposed when you use the sleeve inside the backpack, but it's probably okay because the sleeve is quite a bit away from the zippered part. Don't know about the Spyder. I am going to receive the Velocity Matrix as a gift later this month... so far there has been been mostly positive reviews about it, so I look forward to testing it out.

Hmm, the IBEX is actually wider than the Pegasus but the Ibex is shorter than it. The IBEX would be my perfect bag if only it fit the laptop.
Aren't Velocity Matrix and Spyrder the same with just different looks?? Well nice to hear the Velocity will fit it well, but it seems too small, I mean not for the laptop but for other stuff, i will need enough space inside to add a few books and other stuff so it would really suck if the Velocity is tight.

I PMed Dom from Slappa a week ago, and he said that the Matrix should be able to fit the laptop and at least 3-4 textbooks inside. I don't know about other accessories on top of that (like the power brick, headphones, etc).

I was going to get the Slappa M.A.S.K. bag before settling on the Matrix (I'm going to get the Matrix as a birthday present... cheaper for my siblings, who are buying it for me). From what I understand, that bag has a lot more room. I heard either that bag or the bag called Astro (the Major League Gaming sponsored one) can fit a ton of stuff on top of the laptop.

But I figure... I really don't want to end up stashing more than the laptop and power brick on my back at the same time. No matter how good the backpack is, I don't want to kill my back with all that weight.

The Spyder and Matrix, from what I understand, are cosmetically different but functionally the same. Please don't take my word for it, but that's what I read after researching both bags.

I have a swissgear ibex for my M17xR3. Not the best choice.

The reason I have this bag is I bought it originally for my HP Dv7t quad edition which eventually ended up being returned. Unfortunately due to newegg's return policy, if I had returned the ibex I would have lost 15% to the restocking fee in addition to the return shipping, so it just wasnt worth it.

In order to fit the laptop in the ibex, I always put it back in the black felt sleeve that it came with, I then slide it in the laptop zippered compartment, although not in the laptop pocket. The laptop pocket does not let it sit low enough to close the zipper. Even being in the zippered compartment isnt enough, once I put the laptop in I pick up the back and shake it down so that it settles as far in as possible, even then the zipper is pretty tight on the corners. This is why I have the felt sleeve over it, I dont want the zipper to rub and damage the corner of my machine.

A buddy of mine who bought his M17xR3 before mine picked up the Everki Beacon laptop bag.

Amazon.com: Everki Beacon Laptop Backpack with Gaming Console Sleeve, Fits up to 18-Inch (EKP117NBKCT): Electronics

I saw it and was pretty impressed. The laptop pocket is lined with a fuzzy material (think stuffed animal), and the bag itself is cavernous (it is designed to also carry an XBox 360 or PS3 as well). There are a few pockets but they arent as functional as the bag is designed to be a gaming bag rather than a school bag.

I would buy the Everki Beacon if I could get rid of the Ibex, but I cant justify just not using a $65 bag.

Well after reading most of this topic , im thorn between the everki beacon and
    The astro scout.

I would like your help in deciding (price is not really the issue) , although i like the slim look of the astro it feels by pictures that for few more bucks i get ALOT more space with the everki (planning to carry The m17x + mouse + powerbrick)
And if possible few cloths and stuff so while i like the total look of the astro more i would like to know if the size diff between everki and scout is as huge as it looks..

Just got a Brenthaven Prostyle BP-XF. It fits the R3 perfectly, even with the pouch that our R3s come with. Also has padding on 5 sides (no padding on the top end as usual). But as always, Brenthaven has good padding for the base. Another great backpack from them lolz. Only thing missing is style. It's kinda ugly compared to other brands :p

I've been using the m17x Orion backpack for a while now. I gotta say I'm so glad I got this instead of a messenger bag. Even with this much padding the backpack still feels extremely heavy, walking just 10 minutes will feel uncomfortable for the shoulders.

    Woops.

Been so busy that I haven't been able to take pix and upload of my new backpack: Brenthaven Prostyle BP-XF. Instead, I'll share a linky with you guys which has a nice review and even an unboxing video: Review: Brenthaven ProStyle BP-XF. Official link: http://www.brenthaven.com/pc/prostyle-bp-xf-laptop-backpack

Please note, that my R3 fits almost the same way that the lappy used in the vid does. There's some wiggle room, but it's good wiggle room. I can put my lappy in the AW-included sleeve into the compartment and it slides in and out easily. There's padding on all sides except the top. The padding is about 1inch thick on the left and right, and about the same for the base. The material is old-school Brenthaven ballistic nylon, which is VERY durable. The shoulder straps are very padded, but hurt my neck after a short period of use (like 5minutes in lolz). The Orion definitely is a more comfortable backpack to wear with the R3 in it. Also, the backpack isn't as square as it looks in the review above. It's a bit more rectangular, but still kinda looks square from up close. All in all, I like it, and it's money well spent if you need superior protection. Although it's not as roomy as the Orion, it's good if you're just going to college or the library.

Hope this info helps anyone who's still searching for a backpack. Have a great rest of the day!

    ***Pics possibly on the weekend

No, it will not. Look at the interior dimensions: 1.25" depth. The M17xR3 is 1.77"... I'm using this for my M17xR3:

    Contour™ Overnight Notebook Roller - K62903 - Kensington

You can get it from Amazon.com here:

Amazon.com: Kensington 62903 Contour Overnight Roller Suitcase and Notebook Carrying Case: Electronics

The interior dimensions listed for the Kensington roller is less than the M17xR3, but that is because the roller comes with a padded sleeve. You can buy this sleeve for your M17xR3 which will fit inside the roller:

Amazon.com: Case Logic ENS-17 17-Inch Neoprene Laptop Sleeve (Black): Electronics

I have not yet traveled with the above combination, but that is what I WILL be traveling with at some point (air travel).

    Hope that helps you :)

Does anyone know if the CoolerMaster Notepal U3 will fit in the pocket with the M17xR3 in the Everki Beacon backpack?

I know on my older Notepal u2 and old laptop it would wrap around the laptop and fit right in the pocket saving me space, so I'd like to do it again. If anyone has experience with these products let me know.

Guys! I've found the perfect backpack for the M17x R3, and it has the added benefit of not looking like a laptop backpack. Introducing the Targus A7!

Product link: Backpacks for Laptops | TSB200US | by Targus

It's honestly a really well-built laptop backpack. Some of the neat features I've noticed on it:

    - The laptop compartment is entirely separated from the rest of the bag, meaning nothing else can scratch it. The laptop compartment is also lined with this sort of fleece material. Super soft, and it will protect the M17x R3 from scratches. It is also well-padded on all sides: front/back/sides/bottom.

    - There are a LOT of pockets on this dang bugger. Excluding the laptop compartment, there are a total of 15 other pockets and places to put your stuff. This means, you can properly organize your stuff into these pockets and not have to throw everything in one big tangled pile.

    - Made of very durable material. The outside is made out of this thickly woven nylon and seems like it would hold up well in the long-run. The bottom is also made of tarpaulin (water & wear resistant).

    - The A7 almost looks like it's a rugged hiking daypack, and I'm sure it can also be used as such. I much prefer this style of backpacks over backpacks like the Everki Beacon or Astro Scout. Those backpacks seem way too streamlined and laptop-centric.

    Hope this helps!

Well... can't please everyone. I've already looked at the SLAPPA backpacks before, and all of them, including the M.A.S.K. look ridiculously ugly to me. So I definitely do not think the Targus A7 that I recommended looks like SLAPPA backpacks at all. But I guess that's just my opinion. I think the Targus A7 looks very understated compared to all of the other laptop backpacks out there.

Also, the reason why I think the ASTRO Scout screams "LOOK AT ME, I'M A LAPTOP BACKPACK", is because it has a giant "ASTRO" logo printed on its face. Anyone who's looking to steal a laptop knows that ASTRO = gaming products. And considering that the ASTRO Scout is overly square in shape, it wouldn't be too difficult for a thief to guess that it houses a laptop.

astro on the other hand, blieve it ornot is not that popular altho its awesome (as i do own a wireless A40 audio system)

I bought the Razer StarCraft 2 bag, and I failed utterly xD It fits perfectly at first, but since it gets thinner from mid to bottom of the bag, it doesn't go all the way down. Luckily, though, you can JUST close it. Protip: There are better bags out there for this massive monster!

I'm probably gonna grab an incase messenger bag. They're a little more pricy (180 for a 17" messenger) they're made for the 17" MBP but according to the dimensions on their Website and the dimensions on alienwares site, it should fit and have room for my school books and other stuff. But I guess I'll find out. I really want a nice messenger bag for mine. I'm not a backpack fan.

I just got an Astro Scout. Couldn't be more pleased. It's a very high quality bag. The R3 fits snugly in the pocket which is lined with extra cushy padding. Lots of room for accessories too, which is nice.

I bought a Swissgear pegasus and I am quite pleased with it. The fit is snug but not tight, and I like the way the backpack looks and feels. Note that its the only backpack from swissgear that will fit the M17x, do not waste your time with any other ones. I ebay'd mine for 55.

The Astro bag and the Slappa Matrix look to be similar pricing once s+h is factored in. Any distinction between the two?

Okay, I just ordered the Targus CityGear Los Angeles Laptop Case. I tried to do some searching around this forum for info on it, but the search feature on this thread is god awful. I don't know why, but even typing in "Targus" yielded no results.

Any thoughts or opinions?(bought it because it seemed to the best in offering space for the laptop as well as maybe a book or two for classes etc from the options available. I had a $25 coupon for the EPP store)

    guys, anyone using 5.11 Rush 72 ???

I love the tactical military looking stuff , so after I owned a M11x, I decided to buy this Rush 24 backpack & put my laptop inside the hydration bladder pocket and it's fit nicely. the rubber pad inside help protect our laptop and keep your back straight. Now, I can't do the same after I replace and buy M17xR3. Reconsider to have the bigger size for this backpack (rush 72) but still not sure about M17x will fit inside. (the hydration pack, not the main compartment pack).

so just want to know if some of you already both the backpack & the laptop and tell me if it can be used for hold my laptop.

this is the great backpack I ever used, water resistant, good looking, a huge compartement, lots of pocket, and strong. should be handle the M17X weight pretty easily.
