Hey dookie, you and I seem to have the same priorities when looking for a backpack for our R3s. I'm gonna be commuting with my laptop on foot and on a train every 2 or 3 weeks, often during rush hour, so I need something with a lot of padding. Thinking of getting the Brenthaven ProStyle that you have. Is that still the best backpack for protection that you know of?

*bump* in case anyone else knows of something with more padding.

I've been looking at the Everki Black beacon and it looks pretty nice But I'm not sure it looks big enough to carry what I want to carry with it. I'm looking for a bag that will comfortable fit the M17XR3, it's power brick, a mouse, an Xbox 360, it's power brick, and some controllers. Anybody have any other bag suggestions that you think would be able to carry all this stuff?

I don't haul all of that around everyday but I'd like something for the occasional road trip.

    Hey bud,

YES. All Brenthaven's have TONS of padding. So much padding that the backpack itself is a good 2lbs without load lolzzz. You'll have space for the lappy, the plug, a mouse, various school supplies, and 1-2 textbooks + a notebook or 2. Only downside is the ProStyle BP-XF doesn't have a water bottle holder.

For those interested in the Beacon, it's godd little padding, and is too overpriced. It's really big though, and can fit lots of things like a console. The AW Orion 17" which I also have, also has lots of space and can fit a R3 and PS3 (fat) at the same time, plus plugs for both the R3 and PS3, 3 controllers, and an external hdd and all other plugs. However, has very little padding.

In conclusion, if you're just going to work/school, then Brenthaven will do it for you. If you really just want a good looking backpack, get the Sumdex Impulse backpack from amazon. I saw a dude at school wearing it, and he was a big dude, and it looks big enough to fit an R3, and has TWO waterbottle holders haha: http://www.amazon.com/Sumdex-PON-377BK-Speed-Flame-Backpack/dp/B0039IENYE. It most likely has zero padding though, much like all other brands that are not Brenthaven :)

Which one were you thinking? If money is an issue, then get the Orion backpack. If you can save up a bill, then invest in the Brenthaven. Lifetime warranty, so they'll replace it for you if it messes up.

I have the Everki and I can squeeze in my r3, two binders, a huge history book, and my calc book with my peripherals in all the pockets. It was heavy and completely full so idk if the 360 and all of its accompanying gear will fit. :( Haven't tried it though so it might.

Yup. GET IT and we'll be Brenthaven buddies!

Sellout.woot has a $20 backpack for 17.3" backpacks tonight. Grab it while it's still available! Not sure if it's got adequate padding though. But for the price, who cares--you can just add foam on your own. G'nite guyz.

I've been reading through the pages, but haven't found what I am looking for. I have a refurb M17x r3 on the way, and I want a sleeve for it. I just want to give it a little extra protection when I can transporting it in a bag. Can anyone recommend a sleeve that would fit without extra space?

I followed the advice of someone on Amazon who recommended Everki Commute 18.4, as they said the 17 inch model was too small. However, the 18.4 sleeve just arrived, and it is much bigger than is necessary. My M17x should be here Monday!

This is what I bought: Amazon.com: 17" Widescreen Laptop Notebook Sleeve Carrying Flip Case Bag for Fujitsu, Samsung, Dell, Acer, ASUS Eee PC, Gateway, HP, Sony, Compaq, IBM, Mac, Sharp, Toshiba models: Everything Else.
It's VERY snug (but stretches to fit), if that's what you're looking for. The quality is good, but like I said, it's tight. Also, for the first couple weeks, it'll stink like that neoprene stink. You gotta throw it in the washer (gentle cycle/cold) and hang dry it a few times. Because water and electricity were free at my house, I washed it like 8 times. It sat in the corner of my room for about 2 months without use. Now the stink is gone lolz.

    Gl with your findings.

I have a Belkin 17" sleeve which fits quite well, just a little tight on the sides but there is plenty of padding under the zip.

Not that I needed another bag (I currently own the astro scout), but I had to buy a new backpack for school, and based on the weather out here in Syracuse, as well as my love for snowboarding, I bought a bag that I can use on the hill, or in school.

Quiksilver Travis Rice bag. I'll receive it on friday and update with my impressions. ESPN said they carted a 17-inch laptop in it though, so we'll see. It's built to be an Avalanche Gear bag so it should be a solidly built bag.

I haven't gotten it yet...but from a video I saw, it actually has a pretty rigid bottom to it...I'm assuming because they want the bag to be able to take a licking in case you get caught in an avalanche.

I'm not buying it to hold my m17x primarily (it's a 90 dollar bag, at least for what I paid. I need something for school and snowboarding more importantly)...but I figured that if I'm going to get it, I'll throw the m17x in there and let anyone whose interested know what I find.

Sounds good. Hopefully it's not like any of the other crap backpacks that Quiksilver or any of those board companies makes (zero padding).

The only 3 brands I've ever seen/touched/felt-up that I think take padding seriously are 1) Brenthaven, 2) Samsonite, and 3) this brand I found at Frys that is only carried by Frys (forgot what it's called, but they actually use a piece of wavy-ridgid plastic that is glued to foam and then put into the base).

Bag showed up. Definitely a no-go for the M17xR3. Figures though. This laptop does have a bigger footprint than most 17 inch laptops.

    Sorry for the false alarm.

:) You gonna return it? Another thinner/lighter backpack (no padding) might be one of the Jansport ones. Still, dunno if they'll fit the R3 though. To be safe, you should get what I have :) I cannot, absolutely, cannot stress this enough... I've never regretted it since the day I received it in the mail.

I got the brenthaven prostyle bp-xf, but I think I'm going to return it. Looks great (don't know why people complain about it's style) great high quality material, great build quality (better than anything I've seen in a store, for sure), best padding ever, and the m17x r3 fits in very snugly....well almost fits. I can barely get the zipper over the top of the alienware beast and the corners poke up into the zipper/top fabric so that I'm afraid if I throw it in the trunk and rattles around a little I'm worried about damage on the top. If i could put some padding on the top it wouldn't be so bad but the fit is so tight on the top there is no space for padding and the zip itself doesn't really have padding.

Dookie - how did you manage it when you had the Brenthaven? I'm probably as concerned about padding as you are, but I just don't know how/if I can make this work.

I can always find an somewhat inexpensive 18" pack and line it myself, but I hate the idea of having to spend $60 or $70 and then have to buy extra sleeves and padding (which may cause the bag to change shape). For the price charged stuff should work out of the box.

I bought this at Microcenter ( 17" Premium Laptop Briefcase | Mobile Edge) but the build quality isn't as good as the Brenthaven for almsot the same money, and I really want a backpack. And it has a potentially fatal flaw - magnetic closure on the flap. I don't know how anyone can put a magnetic claps on *laptop* bag. i carry a portable drive with my and am paranoid about losing my data. if i keep the bag i will probably go to a tailor and him remove the magnets and put in velcro instead, but that's like an extra 20 or 30 bucks on top of the $100 price.

the other possibility is Slappa, but it looks like they only have about 1/2" padding, and I'm not sure there is space in the MASK (the most likely model) to put extra padding in under the laptop compartment or at the bottom inside of the compartment. Does anyone have any experience with that?

Fountaincap - did you end up keeping the Brenthaven? If you returned it did you have any problems?

If anyone wants to see photos let me know and I can snap a few and post them so they can see what Fountaincap and I are talking about, otherwise I won't bother.

Nah, I was too nervous about damaging something while trying to force the laptop in or closing the zipper. After all, it's supposedly meant for a 17" laptop only. I got it from Amazon and had no problem returning it.

    Fountaincap,

I bought directly from Brenthaven, we'll see how they are with returns.

Did you finally settle on something you'll keep?

I'm leaning towards Slappa Mask as there are too many options left I haven't looked at, but I am nervous about the padding on it.

    Hey yo,

Good to see another Brenthaven brother, but disappointed that this family is being quickly broken up lolz. With regards to your problems with the zipper, I too have the same issue. It's very snug at the top, and there's zero padding. But I have yet to find a backpack that even comes close to any of the Brenthaven products I own. THe top isn't too big of a deal, cuz we're very less likely to drop it that direction. I think if you are putting it in your trunk, maybe you might wrap or roll an old blanket/towel and wrap it over the top end of the backpack before you load it in your trunk. Or, you could put the backpack into one of those milk crates in your trunk, so it doesnt flipflop around. I love my backpack, even if it makes me look like a turtle/hiker. At least I don't look as geeky as ppl using Targus/SwissGear backpacks :) :) You should keep it. I don't think the Slappa's have nearly as much padding as Brenthaven.

i just bought myself an Everki Beacon, and i love it. :)

i planned to go m18x later so this one is just perfect,
the behive surface fits perfectly for alienware.
Love the design, especially the orange ultra-padded compartment !
so many space to use. it can even carry 1 extra console (Ps3 / xbox360 / wii ..etc) since m17xR3 and m18x have HDMI-In .. this is a big bonus for me.

FYI, for folks who are on a bit more of a "budget," the AW Orion 17" fits both my PS3 and R3 at the same time as well, plus all plugs/cables, an external HDD/plugs/cables, and 3 ps3 controllers. Lots of space. Beware though, you must add your own padding to the base of the bag.

Swissgear Pegasus is awesome. I traveled with the M17xR3, a Macbook Pro 13, WNDR3700 router, Syology 211 NAS, a Nintendo WII, IPAD, and 2 iphones through 6 airports when we moved a few months back and it made life so much easier. I highly recommend it. You can find them as low as 60 bucks, I think they retail for 130. Worth every penny.

Hi everyone. I FINALLY found the perfect bag and sleeve all in one! I was mostly looking for a sleeve, but this item is a messenger bag with detachable sleeve.

REI Quantum Checkpoint Laptop Brief - Free Shipping at REI.com

I am able to fit everything in it that I want, and the sleeve fits the R3 perfectly, so that I could detach it and put it in a backpack.

Subscribing to the REI newsletter, I was able to grab it for $85.

Nah, man. I bought this because I go to school in Upstate NY, and the weather can be pretty brutal. This is a synthetic waterproof bag that will keep my school macbook safe from the elements, and I can also take it out on the hill when the winter comes and I feel like snowboarding.

I have an astro scout that does the job just fine. :p

as much as i love the concept, i don't find it particularly settling to be having your heavy laptop dangling on the outside by a few clips. How are the clips? are they plastic? how many are there? do they hold up after long use?

Im in need of a bag for when mine arrives, found the official one on amazon for £69.99 or with some vouchers can get it direct from dell for £75 brand new.

    alternatively ive found this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Swissgear-G...senger/dp/B000NOP9K4/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

looks good, read the reviews and fits 17.3 machines nicely, looks robust with good amount of padding etc...

what are your guys opinions on the official alienware one?

Sounds like you need a good bag. Keep reading on...

I don't even use my AW bag anymore. It's no good for being mobile. It only has padding for YOUR comfort, but nothing for the safety of your backpack...

The backpack is pretty similar. I always felt like the straps were going to rip off while I was walking...
