I am looking for a backpack for my M17x R3 that is not the orion bag. The orion bag is overpriced to me IMO and I'd like something that isn't too big and can fit my laptop but slim at the same time. I've been looking but all of them either look really terrible or are extremely padded for people that are not careful. I am very careful and do not need that much padding.

If anyone can help me I'd be very grateful. :)

I have the Everki beacon which runs about a hundred dollars US. It's not terribly big but has plenty of room. My previous bag was a Targus Citygear. It is big enough but slimmer than the Everki. It is also much cheaper. I just googled it and saw that you can get one for sixty bucks or so. Personally, that bag is as small as I would go unless you are looking for something like a sleeve. The citygear is just big enough for this laptop or at least mine is. I had to get a new bag because I carried that Targus for two years and it was getting very tattered looking. The shoulder straps were looking pretty bad. I got the Everki because it had more velcro pockets, zippers, and the straps seemed very comfy to me.

After reading all the post from here and with my new R3, I finally satisfy with the Astro Scout. I bought a Slappa M.A.S.K but returned it after I received it. The reason why I returned the M.A.S.K is because it is way bigger than I thought, I was prepared for a big backpack but the M.A.S.K is just out of my imagination. And believe me when I mean big it is really big because I am 6’1” tall and I am not a small person. Also, the M.A.S.K is more ninja turtle look which I didn’t realize in pictures. For those of you who want to buy an M.A.S.K bag, think carefully before you buy it because Slappa charge I believe a 10% restocking fee and you have to pay the shipping if you want to return the bag…and it is kind of a painful thing, not a happy experience at all. However, if you really like the Slappa bag, buy it anyway, it is a very nice bag, just too big and turtle like IMO.
About the Scout bag, I don’t think I need to comment that a lot because so many people here bought that bag and wrote reviews about it. It is really a slim backpack and IMO it worth $70+ and it has same quality (I think it is better quality but just my own personal view) as the M.A.S.K bag which cost more than 100 bucks. I am happy with the Scout bag right now and I do recommend that bag to people who want a slim style backpack with less ninja turtle look.

so, how's the messenger bag? I was looking for something that'll fit my new alienware beastie.. For the occasional travel it'll be doing, I thought the messenger bag would be nice...

I've got a backpack for my work laptop, and love it.. But I figure if I'm taking my mx17 somewhere, I don't need a big bag.. Just enough for the laptop, power supply and a mouse for gaming....

Anyone else who has another option for a "smaller" bag that'll fit the mx17, feel free to jump in too!

    Hi Guys
I was just wondering how comfortable will these bags be
    Everki Beacon
    Slappa mask or Kampus
    Astro Scout

Note(what I will be keeping in the bag):
Alienware m17x + charger (will be in sleeve...laptop compartment?)
Apple MBP 15 in + charger ( will be in a sleeve to be in the main compartment)
    Mouse pad
    Gaming mouse
    Possible textbooks etc :X

So will it fit and is it comfortable (if I was to wear it +3 hours) ?

Oh and if it helps, I am 5'10

@Teddiku I've got an Everki Beacon and it is the only bag I have had experience with from your list.

The Everki will handle all of those with no problem. The only limiting factor may be the textbooks, depending on their size and shape and how many you have, You'd easily be able to fit 3-4 textbooks with everything else but it will start to fatigue your back eventually (for me at least).

It is a very comfortable bag. I went travelling and fit a huge amount in my Beacon, I think it ended up weighing about 13kg. I wore this for 2hrs+ at some stages and I still found it fairly comfortable and easily bearable. The thick pads do a good job at dispersing the weight evenly and across the width of your shoulders. I'm about 5'11" and when the Beacon was bearing that 13kg load, it looked very big on my back. I have a relatively small frame and though the pack never felt unwieldy, it probably looked a bit oversized for my back. If you were weary about that, it could be something to consider but it doesn't phase me at all because it means I can carry my Alien and pretty much anything else I need, wherever I go. :D

The Beacon is a great bag and I would highly recommend it but also check out what the other guys have to say about the other bags on your list. The Astro Scout is also a very nice looking bag.

Oddly enough, I've had a similar amount in my Scout, only I had a 17" Macbook Pro rather than the 15".

I can't say it was comfortable.. but that was due to the sheer weight of it all.. good luck finding any bag that is comfortable with all that in!

Work laptop + personal laptop (which some companies would forbid to be used as a work laptop), not sure if it's the same case as his though :)

OK, I know this is going to sound a little strange coming from someone who just bought an expensive piece of tech built in Asia, but I'm starting a slow search for a new backpack that can accommodate my new r3. Not looking to buy soon, I'm going to be on a search for this one.

Need a backpack with reasonable padding - prolly don't need as much as dookie was looking for as I won't be traveling with it nearly as often - but is also made in the USA.

Our household has been trying to buy as many products made domestically as possible, with exceptions in some few key areas (such as laptops) where we just have not been able to find a competitive US assembled or totally manufactured product.

Sadly,I'm not finding a lot in searches that looks good to me. I like Slappa and Swiss Gear otherwise, but would much prefer something made in the US if at all possible. Any suggestions? Has anyone else tried this kind of search?

Hey there! I just ordered this...

Amazon.com: SwissGear SA1908 ScanSmart Backpack (Black) Fits Most 17 Inch Laptops: Electronics

It should be coming in this Monday...my R3 is coming in the day after. I will report back with pictures as soon as I can.

Thanks Agent Coolblue. :) But afaik Swiss Gear is made in Europe, not in the US. Have you confirmed this model is made or assembled in the US?

That said, my laptop backpack of the last 5 years has been a swiss gear, and I do love it. Took me a year to find all the pockets, and never had any problems with the padding level with the limited travel I do. Has held up wonderfully, and I still use it every day, even though I don't usually have a laptop in it. But, it definitely won't fit my r3, so since I need to find a new backpack for it... :D

Thanks for the reply, Teddiku. :)

I knew about Timbuk2, but wow are they hideous! Actually makes me cringe a bit. They also don't look like they will hold a whole lot more than the lappy and accessories when traveling. What's your experience with how much they will hold? And are they more comfortable to carry than they look? I have arthritis in my shoulders and back, so ergonomic straps are important to me.

I've read a lot about the Everki here in this thread. People seem to love them, and they look pretty good to me too. But I can't confirm where they manufacture. Do you have confirmation on that?

Darn. Everki is made in China. Oh well.
    Any other suggestions?

I mostly use their messenger bags because I can customize the colors. For the only Timbuk2 backpack I used, it was really comfortable even at full load. The straps are ergonomic.

For the bag I linked eariler(seems like the only backpack from Timbuk2 that would fit this laptop)
    This is the product info

Timbuk2's trademarked Swing Around Access; grab your laptop without taking off your pack .
Padded, low profile stretch laptop compartment for full protection without the bulk
Lightweight ergonomic shoulder straps are designed to fit people, not robots
External zip pockets for easy access to your daily essentials.
    Super lightweight Mission6 nylon fabric.
Multiple grab handles for easy lifting
Internal organization for accessories, and gadgets.
On-strap bottle opener for party tricks and quick refreshment
Vista loop for ?blinky? bike light attachment.

    ^also that BAG IS HUGE
    12.2w/20.5h/6.5d/1.2lb

Also do you know if Northface is USA? You maybe could look at that? Those backpacks are also quite comfortable

North Face is made in China, Vietnam, Bangladesh and India, it seems. :(

Thanks for the info on the Tibuk2 though, it's sounding better. Still find it hard on the eyes, but I could adjust. I know there are a couple of stores nearby that carry them, though maybe not that model. Next time I'm in that area I'll get a look. Much appreciated. :)

I'm 5'3", so I sympathize with dookie. Every bag looks huge on me. But I'm so used to it, it doesn't bother me.

    Hello all,
Just recieved my M17xR3 last week and now looking to get a backpack, but hoping someone will have experience with my needs.

Comfort for biking to work, 4 miles
    Rainproof to a certain degree
    Easy of use/access while walking

During the summer here we have tourist that turn a ten minute drive into a one hour drive or more. It only take me 20 minutes to bike to my restaurant. Plus enjoy the exercise.

I also hammer the weekly rentals with door tags (requires walking down the beach looking at bikini's), but at times get caught in storm that blows in.

I like the looks of the Astro Scout and Orion (they appear slim, but want to get thoughts from students or city people on how they hold up with biking and weather. Really do not want to get caught in rain and have pc and paper work destroyed.

    Thanks in advance

I've been using the Alienware Orion Backpack for my M17x R3 and I gotta say it's been flawless so far. I've only had to use it a few times, but I can say it survived a trip from North Carolina to London. It's still in great working condition.

    Just a note:

This bag (a Swiss Wenger messenger-style Legacy Slimcase for a 17" notebook) will NOT properly fit an M17x R3. Right now, I'm getting by, putting the notebook in one of the accessory pockets.

Hi guys I have been looking around the forums for awhile now and I cant seem to find anything so I'm making a new thread.

My question is fairly simple, I know that people can seem to fit their r3's into the ASTRO SCOUT BACKPACK but I'm also aware that the r2 is slightly larger so I am wondering if anyone is certain if the m17x r2 will also fit or not.

Here's a link to the bag:

r2 is a fair bit ticker than r3, and r3 fits astro very tight, I would say it won't fit, but who knows until somebody tries :) (I have astro btw, it is the best bag I ever owned)

I was keen to get an Astro Scout for my R2 as well but after trawling through the huge backpack thread, it seemed pretty tight on the R3 so our beast wouldn't stand a chance.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...ags-backpacks-cases-sleeves-discuss-here.html

I ended up with the Everki Beacon which is a great bag too. It isn't as good looking as the Astro but it can fit pretty much anything inside and is very comfortable. Goodluck!

Just wanted to throw in my support of Slappa. I purchased the Slappa Kiken Jedi Mind Tricks 18" bag and the PTAC Ballistics sleeve (18" also) for my M17xR3 and it is amazing!

Without the PTAC it would still be fine but I needed extra protection because I am on a plane every week now.

If you want my real opinion on them, go to the slappa site and look at the customer reviews. The one that is titled "an honest opinion" is mine.

Hey guys, I was wondering if I could get some help on picking out a backpack.

I read through the entire thread, and what I came out with is choosing between the Astro backpack and the Everki bag for my m17x r3.

I will be needing this for school, so ideally I would need a bag that can carry my computer, all the power cords associated with it, my kindle, and 2-3 textbooks, and stay comfortable enough to have on my back for extended periods of time (1 - 2 hours at the most). If it helps, I'm 6'1", and not a stick.

what size text books you usually carry? I don't know how many the compartment will hold to well. I usually carry my binder, the power brick, my mouse, my external HD, and a game or two in mine with no issues. :)

I bought the astro backpack, which was delivered yesterday....

First impression are, it's a great bag... It's not to big and it's not to small.

For me I don't do much travelling anymore so it's more for protection at home so it's ideal...

There is one slight problem with the bag that actually almost made me return it.. And that was the where my m17x was in.... There are 4 elasticated straps that to be honest makes getting the m17x a bit of a struggle and whilst removing it I felt I was putting unnesscary pressure on the laptop itself in fear of breaking the screen whilst try to remove it from the bag.

So because the bag has some great positives for me this was causing me a few problems....

So what did I do... Yes you guessed it I cut off the 4 straps and now it's perfect the m17x now sits in the correct position and is easy to put in and take out...

And now I can even put the m17x inside a sleeve because removing the straps has made it more spacious.

The Velcro strap keep the m17x in place so it's not going to fall out and plus it will be zipped up as well...

So I would give this bag 7 when I got it now I would give it a 9.

you shouldn't have to make alterations but it's a personnel thing for me, to have what I have got I would have had to get an even bigger bag, which I want my bag to be as small as possible but still to be ale to carry the things I need...

    Hope this helps

    Thanks

    Ian

For the M17X, do you recommend the Orion messenger bag or the Orion backpack?

Any bags or cases other than Orion that you recommend?

    Thanks in advance!

I bought the backpack and am very happy with it. The backpack is very well made and comfortable to carry. The system is pretty heavy once you add the power brick and all of the other stuff that you will be carrying, so in my opinion a backpack is just the better choice. When I was looking at reviews on the messenger bag there were a bunch where the strap had ripped or broke due to it only having single stitching. One person had even said his laptop hit the ground. Once I read that I was turned off of the messenger bag.

I am looking for a sleeve or cover for protection in my backpack- it actually had a padded pocket but I am a little paranoid about this stuff. Anyone try either the case logic 17.3 or other brands and have a snug fit with the r3s? Thanks in advance.

Has anyone tried using the Orion M18X Messenger Bag for the M17X?

I'm leaning towards a messenger bag rather than a backpack, but I'm concerned about the straps on the M17X Messenger Bag.

Any reviews on the M18X Messenger Bag? Will it be too big for the M17X?

(I also need room for peripherals such as mouse, keyboard, headphones, etc.)

Thanks in advance for your guidance!
