Ive got the Alineware backpack, solid bag. Look like a bit of a tool with an alienhead on your bag though. Not very "stealth" when taking your laptop to work :D

I'd get the Astro scout bag now, if i had a choice.

I am looking to buy the Orion Backpack but see the tactical as well. Are they the exact same bag on the inside and the only difference is the camo print on the tactical?

Still waiting to hear back on the bag you have pictured in this reply. I really like the look of it. Is this your XPS bag?

    EDIT:

Seems this is the XPS bag:

    310-8270.jpg

and this is the Mobile Edge Alienware Odyssey Backpack
    A1219696.jpg

I really like the look of the Odyssey, but it seems that it might be too small for my needs.

I don't like the orion packs. There are no external pockets that i can see, and that is a big turn off to me.

Orion has three external pockets. One either side of the main front pocket (the zippers are hidden. An then there is a secret cash-stash type pocket on one side. There is also a mobile phone holder on one strap.

thanks for that bit of info.. I've read that the orions fall apart at the seams a lot also, and that it might have been due to where you got it from. any truth to that rumor?

I don't know to be honest. All I can say is I've had mine two months and whilst it doesn't get used every day, infrequent use I've had it loaded with plenty of gear and I've not noticed any straining or wear yet.

Someone who has used it daily might provide a better answer.

Incidentally I bought mine from an eBay seller who originally purchased it from Dell directly.

I been thinking of buying an Orion M17x backpack but my only concern is that it's over sized? i really don't carry that many things with me so i would only be carrying my AW with the cords and such.

It is a big bag. I read one review somewhere before I bought it, the reviewer managed to squeeze three differing size laptops in the Orion! It is overkill to be honest but then some people want this amount of storage.

For a laptop this heavy, I definitely would not want to carry it in a messenger back. It will hurt your shoulder a lot...

You could probably check some Crumpler bags out. They have some bags which is said to fit in 17". But AW laptop is kinda big compared to the normal size laptop...

Gotta agree, with the M17X in the Orion backpack it feels bloody heavy on your back! It would be murder hanging off your shoulder.

I just got a Timbuk2 Command 2012 Large. M17X R4 just barely fits. it is so tight I would actullay just say it doesn't fit, but I will live with it.

I love Timbuk. Looked at them before I bought the Orion, but I think there was only one bag (not yours) they recommended for me and I didn't like it's style.

Shame. They were my first port of call.

Dellienware User/Dookie, does the R3/R4 actually fit ok inside the Brenthaven..? The sepc for that backpack seems to state 'up to 17.0', and we all know the lappy itself is not exactly standard size.

Perhaps someone could post a photo showing how the R3/R4 fits into the backpack, like how close to the zip it is..?

Apologies for bumping this thread, but I have to ask: I got my $305 Dell gift card a couple of weeks ago from ordering my M17x. I want to spend at least some of that money on a backpack (I was able to haggle about 28% off between money and gift cards including student and dell advantage benefits, but at the end I just couldn't get a bag), but unfortunately there isn't much of a selection for backpacks on the site, and I want a nice one that I can use to lug around my books in college. The way that I see it, I have a choice between the Orion, the Swiss Gear Ibex, and the Targus XL backpack.

I have absolutely no interest in the Orion, mainly because I don't want to be advertising the fact that I have a very expensive and very desirable Alienware that someone can steal at college, and I don't want to look like a fanboy. I've heard that the M17x R4 fits really tight in the Ibex, so unless someone can say it fits decently I might want to stay away. This leaves the Targus XL, but it's very much overpriced on Dell compared to Amazon ($75 vs. $54).

Should I spend the extra gift card money on the backpack as well as the other stuff I wanted, or should I buy something else with the gift card money and get a better backpack elsewhere?

From what you said, I would buy the bag somewhere else and buy whatever else with your card. There are plenty of things to buy for your computer.

Side note: It's funny that mention that you didn't want the Orion bags so you don't advertise your stuff. My college campus book store actually sells the 17" black and camo versions. At a $30 mark-up of course.

    Hi guys,

Just waiting for delivery of my shiny new M17x R4. Soo... I need a monster laptop sleeve for a monster laptop :)

I don't want a messenger bag or backpack, as I haev little intention of moving the laptop that much - so am trying to find a sleeve that will fit. the issue is that all the 17" ones are not deep or thick enough (by about 1" depth and 0.5" in thickness).

Don't want to spend a fortun on it - as long as it offers some padding and scratch protection - it doesn't need to withstand a fall from a mountain or a nuclear blast ;)

    Icey.

Although I can see your point, there is a hint of slightly overplaying the brand recognition issue in my honest opinion. The bag has an alien head 'badge' on the front pocket. It's black, on a black bag. That's about it. There is really very little else that makes the bag more of a target then any other bag. To be honest, thieves of these type of goods are generally opportunists, unlikely to know the brand they're stealing and likewise not be looking for badges on bags. Thieves planning a steal are gonna plan, watch and steal it anyway - they'd only need to see an M17X being popped in to a Slappa or other bag once to make it a target.

In a twist of irony, one brand I personally wouldn't buy though, is Targus. Worldwide, every man and his dog know that a Targus branded bag, is carrying some form of electronic goods. I travel on the London Underground and railway regularly and I'm always surprised at how many people use Targus bags. They're pretty distinct in design and certainly their briefcase style bags are so obviously carrying a laptop.

That is a very good point. Only people who know of Alienware will recognize a bag with an alien head is the Orion bag. Otherwise, they will just assume it is a normal bag like any bag out there. But really, it does not matter what kind of brands you are using, the second you leave your bags for a quick restroom, it will be gone. I go to a big university and there are way too many reports for stolen phone or laptop. They just steal whatever they can, whenever they can.

Using the same logic, I would probably not buy a Crumpler bags because they are well-known for their overpriced products.

VIDEO COMPARISON - SLAPPA VS ASTRO

After trying a plethora of bags over the years I decided to post a little comparison video on a few. My all-time favorite packs include Booq, and Slappa (although I haven’t been able to test the Slappa over time as I just got it). While I find the Booq a little more comfortable on the back, the Slappa is lighter, and much cheaper.

Sorry if the video is a little rough, it is my first video and I had to cut some scenes. Hopefully this will be a help to the community as I wish someone had done this before I made my decision between the Astro and Slappa. The following bags are mentioned in the video:

    Astro Scout
    Slappa MASK
    Booq Flow XL
    STM Loop
    ASUS: Republic of Gamers

I tried to include current bags (excluding the STM loop), but I also wanted to give an idea of company quality. Booq makes a great pack, but for the price I don’t think it can stack up to what Slappa currently offers (although time will tell). My Booq had endured years of heavy lifting using one shoulder strap, and the stitching is still like new. I’ve had no issues with the zippers (even when the bag was stuffed to the max), and the rain never penetrated the bag (one the one or two occasions I had it in exposed to rain or snow). I suspect Slappa will endure the same (looks and feels solid), but only time will tell. Hope this helps some of you!

EDIT: LOOKS LIKE THE NEW SLAPPA MASK BAGS INCLUDE THE WAIST AND SHOULDER STRAPS (as per post 825 ...Thanks Nyceis)

Very nice video. One interesting note, the Slappa mask I just received does have waist straps, and chest strap across the shoulder straps. I ordered the High Five face, so not sure if that changes the base bag, but I thought I'd point that out.

Great comparison. I probably going to buy the Slappa mask soon. Just wonder how does it feel when wearing the Slappa compared to the Booq? I mean the Booq got plenty of pad on the back to ease the weight. The Slappa only has the big hand signature. Would it add more weight to your back?

    Thank you.

The Booq definitely feels more comfortable to me; I believe the extra padding on the upper half makes a difference. That being said, the padding doesn't affect the feeling of weight to me, and the Slappa is actually a lighter bag. I'll try wearing my Slappa to work one day soon and let you know how it feels as that will be a good test ...it's about an hour and a half walk :)

I don't think this thing is available anymore, but I just dug up a laptop bag that came with a big 17 inch gateway laptop my parents bought in like 2001.

Its probably the best laptop bag I have ever seen, even after over 10 years of sitting in a closet, it still looks brand new. Its got a BIG padded main compartment in the middle that could probably even fit an m18x, and a small side pocket on each side. The material the bag and shoulder strap is made of is heavy duty nylon, and the clips, buckles, and zipper are made of thick stainless steel. Its also got rigged, rubber sections on the bottom.
A perfect tank of a laptop bag for a big laptop.

They don't make em like they used to :D.

    Thanks Nyceis,
If you or Dom (if he reads this) could throw up a picture of what the new strap design looks like (the back of the MASK with the new straps), that would be appreciated. I've searched the net, but cannot find any pictures of it; Thanks again for the info! +1

    Sure, here you go:

The chest strap appears to be detachable, as is it a long velcro loop, but the waist strap is permanently attached, for better or worse.

I just got my Alienware Orion Messenger Tactic Bag. It's great! I can fit my Razer Keyboard Tournament Edition in it with the M17x and Razer Deathadder and the mousepad plus my Razer Onza, quite bulky in the end but that was expected. I thought it was going to be bluish camo, but it was actually shades of gray. :D

Thanks a million! I'm not a fan of the permanently attached ones as I find they often get in the way when the bag is on the floor (i.e. the office chair rolls over the strap, or the clips get broken when stepped on etc); That being said, having them is still better than not having them :D

Glad Slappa added these, and glad you managed to get one of the newer models. Hopefully this will help others make a good choice when looking for their first M17x bag, and thanks again for your help with this Nyceis!

Do you really want your beast of a "laptop" and all of its accesories in a messenger bag hangind from just one shoulder? :p

He meant that you can do yourself a favor and buy a backpack to save your shoulder. I don't know about your body build so I can't say for sure. But your laptop alone is 10lbs. Bags should be a good 2 to 3 lbs at least and you have chargers plus tons of other things to carry. You are looking at 15 lbs on one shoulder.

Unless you are 6ft and 250lbs, otherwise, don't do it.

Belkin sling is a nice low profile bag, however I believe it is only for laptops up to 15.4" sadly:

I would avoid buying anything that wasn't specifically recommended by someone who has a giant laptop. A friend of mine tried to give me her Swiss Army backpack (IBEX maybe?). I had just ordered my Slappa, but was willing to give it a shot. It would have fit any normal 17 incher, but mine was a full no-go.

Looking to sell it for her, anyone want it?

Hey guys, sorry if this was already asked but does anyone know if the slappa laptop sleeves fit the m17x r4? one such as this Ballistix AURA Laptop Sleeve ? I'm looking for a sleeve to put my m17x in on top of putting it in my orion backpack. I'm a little unpleased with the padding of the laptop compartment. What do you guys think about the padding? and any other laptop sleeves that fit it? Just looking for double protection while in transit. Thanks

forgot about this thread, I have a belkin 17 inch messenger bag, the m17x is a snug fit, would possible fit a notepad and a slim textbook in it as well, I can upload pictures if people want me to. Cheap as well for only £20 cant complain.
