So in this case they are trying to replace our Nvidia based motherboard with an Intel based motherboard different though from the R2 so it can support the C2D? interesting... correct me if I am wrong

man.. what are they working on a new intel chipset for?
just give us all the r2s already.. doesnt it cost them more to develop a new board and replace every m17x r1 with the new board -
-
anyway is there an official article/dell blog post stating that they are defective?
-
If our speculations are correct, whether we gonna have the R2 mobo with new CPU or a new mobo will depend on the final cost. If it costs more to the company to provide an R2 mobo with new CPU than developing a new mobo then we won't see the R2 replacement any time soon....
-
i think replacing r2 mobo and cpu would be cheaper than developing a new mobo since they have to spend money on the R&D plus testing and they wont produce in bulk cos the r1 m17x is almost going to be out of the market soon.
unless of course they already have the designs and stuff at hand then it might be cheaper.
either way ill be happy if the stutter goes away and even happier if i can get the r2 mobo and cpu but keep my gtx 280s unless the 5870s come out -

I really doubt that Dell is gonna replace all R1's mobo and CPU for all of us. I think the best they can offer is GPU replacement. Dell is not Toyota
-
Certainly interesting news .Worldwide sales of R1 must be pretty large i would imagine if they did do a recall people would be waiting a bit for a replacement .Time will tell .
-
I'm about to contact Dell now for a request of a replacement or fix for the above reasons.
-
this is bad new if its true. A lot of people going to get screwed by this. Is it possible for them to send the replacement parts only and having myself to install them and send them the defected parts?
-
The i suppose this will be my last Dell laptop ever if i don't get a solution i find acceptable
-
When i contact Dell for service, should i contact them with Windows 7 installed ? the laptop was shipped with Vista 64.

I must admit, i'm really dissapointed...a rig this expensive shouldn't suffer these kind of problems.. i'll hope i don't get screwed.. -

Not sure about Canada Crylo, but Dell US based customers have access to 24 hour tech support. Have you tried calling? They might be available over the weekend.

I'm going to keep an eye on this also. If there is a confirmed defect with this chipset by Dell/Nvidia, then I'll be feeding it over to Kobalt, for them to take up or at least query with Clevo/Nvidia.

It happened and it can't be worse no matter Dell admits their problem or not. I think if Dell officially announces that their product is defective and do a large recall we will be more than happy
-
silly you sold ur m17x ? -
SillyHoney Headphone Enthusiast
I know I will get the R2 soon or later so... let's get ready for that -
I'm keeping my hopes up for Dell to officially admit this issue as well. Pretty annoyed that a machine of this stature is suffering from these issues.

I am liking my 4870s so far, but would not mind a full PM45 motherboard overhaul or an i7 ugprade
-
Reeaaally hoping Dell and Nvidia sign this as being officially defective hardware and then issue a recall.
If that gets established, although a free entitlement to a new M17x R2 sounds ideal to someone who's spent months painstaking trying to fix their computer, they're more likey to continue working on the intel based motherboard for ages and ages.
But what would most likely happen after that?
Will they only allow people's motherboards to be replaced if they send it back or order callouts for people? -
No point in calling right now - wait until its official.
I'm sure the memo has gone out telling csrs to stop offering replacement parts. -
I have just been on the phone to UK support and they say they are brining out bios A04 and new nvidea drivers, just this sound about right or is he just buying time.
-
buying time
they will always come out with newer drivers and bios ....doesn't mean it will fix it -
I have dealt with uk support lots & lots
with My XPS 1710 the support is in India and they are the last to hear anything from past experiences .
-
Tried reinstalling Windows 7 tonight and there is absolutely no way for me getting them to work. Lockups and errors. The DPC Latency is present on both Vista and Windows 7.
Bad laptop indeed. I thought Dell could offer a machine with more quality than this!
Glad i run across this forum since i thought that my problems were isolated. But they arent.
Lets hope Dell solves this for us! A new R2 replacement ? sure, but that'll is too much to ask- it won't happen folksReplacement parts at best.

AW M17 support was in Slovakia/Eastern Europe. I believe this team are still in use for some models, although tis probably split nowadays.

My last few support calls have been somewhere in central/south america and it has been great compared to my past experiences with indian support.
I can understand them, they are knowledgeable, and they were very helpful. -

UK support =/= American or even Asian support.
We don't have local Dell offices in that capacity, and so most of our technical call support is handled by Indians and other folk.
They do have some mid-high-ups in the Ireland office, but they are only called in when it is a matter of Customer Service issue. You're not going to get technical answers and solutions from these people. -

Well, for a defective laptop....I still get alot of use out of mine. Wouldn't mind if a couple things were better, but not the end of the world here

SillyHoney Headphone Enthusiast
Ok so now besides stuttering a lotta people are having their M17x locks up during normal use and this issue is believed causing by defective mobo?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
the only times my machine locks up are when the cpu is heavily overclocked....and I would expect it some then
-
This issue has received that much publicity here & on Engadget and Dell’s Community site etc i am sure things will get sorted sooner or later no worries
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
the endgadget thing was us.....one of the members here emailed them and pointed them to our thread to bring it to the publics attention, about 5 minutes later a dell rep appeared here to help us lol

Yeah this forum certainly packs a punch

I sure as hell would like to see my M17 swapped for a R2.
Been waiting 10 days now for a swap. Had my swaporder cancelled yesterday for no reason at all. It just suddenly was cancelled. Called back immediately (like it said on the cancellation email) and talked to 3 different reps, but no one had any idea as to why the order had been cancelled. What is going on in that company? They working with post-it notes instead of computers? Guess I'll have to call in on monday again to see what's going on.
Funny how a company like Dell just cancels orders without notice. Not even a follow-up mail to explain why it is cancelled. Or letting me know what will happen next. I am the one that will have to spend 2 hrs monday resolving the cancellation and if I ask them for compensation for time and effort lost, they just say NO.
Been struggling with a defective M17x for a month now, and a tech came to my house to swap videocards and my motherboard shorted. So my mobo is definately broken now...;-)
Will just have to wait and see if I can get a R2 to replace this faulty lappy or they will scavage parts from somewhere ad deliver another R1....
Will keep you guys posted when I've talked to the rep on monday. -
Kade Storm The Devil's Advocate
Mine has never locked up with any bios modification.
I read some stuff about people saying that with A03, their machines no longer BSOD'd or crashed through the night. I've had mine running days and no issues.
