What no custom colors?! is there anything close to the color you see in the screen shots? and can the flash etc.. be timed to be almost like breathing in speed and fading?

    Cheers,

You can simulate a breathing effect. I'll see what I can come up with on the colors. No promises. Have a few tricks up my sleeve. ;)

Yeah sorry John... I have not had much time to devote to looking at the custom colors. I played around with it a bit and was able to come close on the Blue/Green but it still looks a bit off to me. Also, given the failed CC update, I am unable to really test it using the new version.

I should have some additional free time to work on this during the week. I'll let you know.

    Thanks.

Question for M17x R2 (and maybe R1) owners. Is your "white," as selected in the CC editor, really white? Mine, especially the Alienware logo and media control strip look more pink/peach colored. I figure it's an artifact of using colored LEDs to mix rather than using a white LED, but it could also be a controller/LED failure.

Its normal nburro. They have tried to get it right/white but cant. I believe you are corect, its simply a limitation of the LEDs, not a controller issue.

Thanks--that's what I figured. I'm just a little paranoid because I had an LED go out on my XPS M1710 a few years back (replaced under warranty).

If you have the latest type of M17x (R1/R2) you need to download the latest version of CC. Its in this thread somewhere, probly around page 10-ish. The older M17's dont have the right keyboard and CC.

If you click the updates button in CC, it should tell you the version number in the dialog box. Another easy way to check is to look at the alienfx editor--if the color selector is two rows of color blocks, it's the old CC, if it's a circle of colors in the middle of the screen, it's the new one.

i dont see any updates when im in the command center, all i see is "FX, Fusion, Touch, Sense." and i clicked in all those and i didnt see anywhere that says update,

when i click the FX is asks me to open in basic or advanced. but when i try to open in either one it always opens to "basic" i get in advance from having to click Theme>new> then i have to click advanced there to finally get in it

EDIT: i just went to dell.com and downloaded the newest version of the CC, i tried extracting it and it worked but it didnt say update, it just said repair or remove. so does that mean i have the newest version? i really dont think i do though..

Yeah, Dell must've figured out that the 2.5 version of CC has problems--they dropped the previous version (2.0, which you appear to have since there is no update button) back out there as the latest. I rolled back to that version because I was starting to have fx problems yesterday with the 2.5 release (just like everybody else). Bummer, too, I liked the new interface for the fx editor :(

Some say the lights flicker, some say they don't work at all. My particular problem was that not all the LEDs worked unless you went into CC and reapplied the theme. On bootup, the alienhead HDD lights didn't work (again until the theme was reapplied).

I'd wait until the next release comes out. Dell pulled the A05 version of CC last week.

you cant with the regular AlienFX software which comes from Alienware, as you arent able to change the touchpad colors. AlienFX Lite is capable of doing that, since you can set morph to the touchpad. Check out my signature for a link to the thread

What you are asking is a lot. First off, your alienfx can react to different applications being open with the default editor (look at events). It will change the color of your lightning as long as some executable is running.

If you however by "reacts" you mean that it changes the color due to different events inside the application, then you are out of luck. Its not possible to mod any application without having the source code, so its not possible for most of these applications. Some of these may support plugins which "might" allow for color changes

    Hi,

Wattos, do you have an API documentation or something near it for AlienFX?

    Best regards

besides the outrages amount of programming and time required for even 1 of these applications, i sought of rolf'd when i saw microsoft word.

do you really want the entire system to scream RED when you misspell a word?

it might harm ones self esteem if one decides to work publicly (like those lovely starbucks folks). :p

Well, there are couple things you can do to write your own program with AlienFX. The easiest solution is to use the SDK which comes with the Alienware Command Center. That provided API is a bit slow, and limiting (e.g. you cannot set the lights of the touchpanel or power button, nor can you write anything to eeprom).

Another solution would be to reuse my work, and have an API in Java for playing around with AlienFX. This should also be quite easy if you know what you are doing. Just look at the AlienFXEngine class (the link to the source is in my signature).

Another way would be to only use the "AlienFX" C++ libraries I have created, which connect to the alienFX device and lets you send messages to it. You would have t implement the communication protocol by yourself.

Lastly, the last way (which comes to mind right now), is to start from scratch and use either libusb (on linux) or WriteFile/ReadFile on the device (on Windows) to implement everything from scratch.

If you were to use it, I would either advice you to use the official SDk or my Java solution. It actually has some comments in it, and the AlienFX engine class does all the work, so you might be able to do something fun in there.

noob question guys, i am trying to make my own theme.
Now i went to advanced mode, and configured everything i want.
Now i want to start adding events, i see a new email event, but everything is disabled, i can't seem to assign colors to zones etc.
I tried adding a custom even - like opening an application, but inside that event everything is disabled too.. how do i fix it ?

If you ever played Dark Void you would see that your mistaken. It has the colors change with every press of the button in the game. Really cool but kinda annoying. I'm sure it would take a good deal of programming to make any program run that way. So I agree with you though that it's kinda tough.

Try selecting a zone other than alienhead or power button. The plus button for adding and action should light up. For whatever reason, those two zones can't be set for events, likely because they already are programmed for battery status.

Interestingly, whe I try to add an application, I get the following:
"Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component"

    Anybody seen that one yet?

Hi, new to the forums, I figured I'd kick off my first post with something helpful :p I haven't seen a fix for this bug yet.

I've fixed this issue on mine though, and I currently have A05 installed with lights functioning just like normal. This is the method I used, also the video card probably doesn't matter in regards to this I could imagine.

Well after installing A05 on Win 7 X64, the first time i got the flicker issue was after setting the keyboard to pulse mode, a bit irritating, but to hell with it right? A month later my windows reg. got messed up and win7 sucked on the R1 anyhow, so damn it and back to vista.

Here's the trick (no more rambling.)
If you have Win7 & A05 installed and don't mind a clean wipe or fresh install:

Downgrade to vista, use the resource disk to re-install drivers, install every driver for your hardware including OSD, then finally whichever revision is on the disk (can't remember.) This is where it started flashing the keyboard to the old version... BUT, and there's always one of those with the R1, it refused to finish flashing or even lock up the program, so I rebooted, uninstalled it and re-installed again to get the flash successful message! :D

I haven't tried going back to 7 yet, that's because win 7 sucks for the R1 and believe it or not, vista WILL play your games faster than it. I've got the qx9300 and HD 4870 xfire, and 6gb ddr3-1066 ram and it works better for me.

As always, I claim no responsibility for damages so do this at your own risk, I did.

    enjoy,
    O.B. WAN.

(sorry for being long winded >.<)

and apparently i didn't notice it said FX not FiX. I've got the color problem where it randomly flickers other colors with A05, this is for that problem.

I have a really big problem! I tryed out the Watto tool, it is really cool... It worked perfect till it crashed once.. I thought mhm uhkay like Winamp Plugin... so i canceled the task. Restarted. When i tryed to run it again it werent doing anything at all. After a while a error popped up. Something with "Cannot connect to AlienFX Device". The same thing said the ControlCenter. I deinstalled Java, deleted the tool, reinstalled Control Center... Nothing. Now my Keyboard has no Light at all and I don't know what to do... Help? :,(
