You should give Dell a call to see what is going on. Even with a delay, your system should be in production. Sometimes the order status page doesn't get updated like it should. Mine still said in production even after I got my tracking number from my rep.

I can not believe I have been delayed this long since 19th February I ordered. Hopefully it will arrive with no problems, I'll be installing Mass Effect 3! -
-
I will report back here in the future with any issues or problems which may occur but hopefully everything will be fine and should be fully working. -
I also have a delay on my order. I live in the U.S.
Order date: 2-28-12
Original EDD: 3-22-12
New EDD: 3-28-12
M17x R3 with NVIDIA 580m -
How are you guys able to get NVIDIA 580m? Website only had two choices, 560M or Radeon HD 6990M
-
Waiting (for 4 weeks) for: M17X R3 Stealth Black / 2760QM / 580 M 2GB / full HD 120 Hz screen / 256 GB Dell SSD / 8 GB 1600 php / Blu-ray -
hmmnn, I see
-
By the way, I've asked a very helpfull Dell rep who's active on this forum (Bill) in another thread to please explain to us the cause of the 580m-shortage. He said he knew someone he could inquire with.
If he gets back to me in another thread I will let you guys know. -
Success! My baby was delivered today. I just have a few more hours of work before I can pull an all-nighter with my baby. I hope she's ready for me.
-
she? hahaha
Congrats! Finger crossed that Puro will deliver mine tomorrow AM -
Best of luck to you! -
Well, just got done with class. My M17x will be here tomorrow but that doesn't help me now. Got an automatic B for the class if I do 100% on all the other assignments. While I am very peeved about that, I know there is very little that can be done.
The instructors position, which I do agree with to some extent, is that I could have purchased a laptop from Best Buy or any other electronic store with a dedicated video card and had it for class. This is quite true, but I wanted to have something that not only stood apart from all the other Toshiba Qosmio's and G74's but would last me beyond the 2 year mark.
My little M11xR2 trudged along at 10-15fps during my presentation due to the amount of calculations it had to do with air velocity and thermodynamics. I am actually quite impressed it did as well as it did. Most all the others did 24-35fps and those were monster systems when compared.
I don't completely fault Dell in this either. I understand shortages and problems with supply chains. Just kind of bummed out that I am only getting a B because I wanted the best of the best. -

2012-03-22 07:41 AM On vehicle for delivery via MONTREAL (WEST/OUEST), PQ depot
Oh the tease. Been "working" from home since this AM waiting for the damn Purolator van. Still waiting -
Did you get it yet?
Good news over here. Looks like Dell might make the EDD (28 March). After having waited for 4 horrendous weeks my status has just changed to "in production".
Apparently Dell has received another batch of 580m cards. -
I *just* arrived home. I had to leave for a staff meeting at 1PM. I get home at 2:45PM and at 2:48PM, I'm not kidding, the door rings! SHE (haha) is here!
I'll unbox it right now and let you guys know if all is well
Funny that Dell receives another batch of 580m when Nvidia announces the new line up -
You tempted fate, HAHAHA...3 minutes of delay and you would've missed the delivery (and Fedex doesn't screw around and wait one second for you to answer the door...trust me on that).
Nvidia's new lineup won't trickle down to Dell for awhile, I think. -
Oh the irony. So I take my joly time unboxing it all and after about 15 minutes unboxing and looking around (did not power it yet), the electricity goes out. Ha! Stupid thunderstorms
Anyway, before I go a bit further, I noticed two things I have questions for.
1) Inside the box, there is some sort of diode. Like a black little bar with a white diode (I think?) at the end. What the hell is that?
2) It seems the factory had fun with my battery. Someone hit the corner of the battery and damaged it slightly. Now I'm not a picky guy, I'll survive. But do you think I'll lose a lot of resale value? Should I call Dell and make them ship me a new battery? See picture:
-
I didn't see a diode in my box. I'll look again in a sec, though.
About your battery. Yeah, I'd reach out to Dell and see if they can ship you another (the less you wait in letting them know, the the more proactive they'll be in addressing your complaint. Kinda jacked up that they'd send it like that...it HAD to be obvious to them, unless they're working in the dark or something. Don't worry about resale, since batteries can be removed and replaced. At least you've a functional unit, though (knock on wood). -
That's the digital S/P DIF connector for some sound systems.
-
Aha...found it in my box. Glad you asked about it because if you wouldn't have, I'd have never known it was in the box or knew what it was.
Thanks for the answer, Luthair74! -
Is anyone running the M17xR3 w/ a 560M? I just ordered mine last week and didn't realize it was not a 580M. I just assumed, not knowing that they had stop producing M17x with 580M last month. I'm not going to lie, but I'm really bummed out about it, not to mention that I payed $1998 for it. So, is the 560M still a good card? For what I've seen the 580M is the best card out there at the moment, but do you think the 560M will do good after all? I do play games, obviously, but I don't have to have everything maxed out at all time (but I would like to though
) I also got the i7 2860QM and 8GB Mem with it. Should I cancel my order and just wait for the 580M to come back? If so, do you think I could get the same rig w/ the 580M for the same price or is the 560M the reason why it was under $2000.00 to begin with? I don't want to spend more than 2k.
In other words... what would you do in my shoes? -
Do NOT use the provided SPDIF connector. There are many reports that it is slightly too large for the hole and causes damage inside. If you must use one, get one from monoprice.com or radioshack.
-
Thanks for the heads up...but honestly, I wouldnt even know what it is for
-
-
hmmn, I can actually get it cheaper:
Processor
Intel® Core i7 2860QM (2.5GHz,3.6GHz with Turbo Boost, 8MB Cache)
Memory
8GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600MHz (4DIMMS)
Display Panel
17.3-inch WideFHD 1920 x 1080 60Hz WLED
Video Card
2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 6990M
Hard Drive
750GB 7,200RPM HDD
for $1981.00
calling rep now, wish me luck -
well, I was not able to change it because I'm going through a military program (prodeal). So I can only send a cancellation request and maybe Dell will put a hold to the order, if not than I guess I'm stuck with it. I will find out in a few days if the cancellation went through.
I didn't even realize I was not getting the 580m; if it wasn't because someone was talking about the card here I would never had known about it. -
-
LMAO, lesson learned! I just hope they are able to stop the order on time.
-
Don't you have a 21 days period to return the laptop anyway? Just tell the rep that you will return it the day you receive it so it makes no sense for them to not stop your order...
-
I can say that I'm glad I didn't cancel because I love my system and the 580, but at the same time if I did cancel, I'm sure I'd be saying that I'm glad I canceled and ordered the 6990m, lol.
A little update on my order compensation. Since I ordered through AAFES, the only compensation I could get was a Dell gift certificate for $75. I was hoping for more as I have heard of people getting up to $200, but I was told it goes off of a percentage of your order. Since I paid just under $1700 for my system, I didn't complain. I'm sure I could have haggled and got more, but I felt that they did their best and the compensation was just something extra. I was just thankful my system got to me before I had to move and that nothing was wrong with it. I used the gift certificate and ordered the Alienware TactX headset and the Razer Kabuto Gaming Mouse mat. The headset came in today, damn USPS driver delivered it to my neighbors house. I even ran him down and asked if he had a package from Dell for me which he said he didn't. Just seemed a bit of coincidence that my neighbor got a package from Dell the same day I was suppose to get a package. I went over to their house since I needed to borrow their vacuum cleaner. They weren't home, but sure enough the package had my address on it, lol. The headset is great, not the best on the market, but more than enough for me, plus it only cost me $5.27 out of pocket. The mouse mat will be here tomorrow which I will use as a screen cleaner and will lay it between the keyboard and screen when closed, although I don't think any of my keys touch the screen. At least I haven't noticed anything on the screen yet. -
Do you guys use a laptop cooler? I think I'll need one as 95% of the time, the laptop is on my lap! I rarely sit down with the laptop on a table.
So a coller that can go between my laps and the m17x would be neat -
-
So my alienware arrived 3 days earlier than expected. Luckily, my ssd came before came on the same day I had time to open it up.
Installing the SSD and a clean windows 7 went smoothly. Right now I'm optimizing for the SSD.
Looks great! Very pleased as of now. -
-
Checked my status and my system was shipped today and will arrive the 29th instead of the 2nd. I can foresee a couple sick days...
I am now able to check the specific hardware config and was a little disappointed to see the SSD is a Samsung PM810 instead of 830, but I'm sure it will still perform well beyond my current 5400 rpm hard drive system. -

I just ordered crysis 2 and bought BF3 in preparation of receiving my R3 next week (my order status changed to "in production" last week). And guess what...I receive an e-mail from Dell that my EDD has been changed from 28 March to 12 April (order date: 22 Feb).
Nice one Dell! Sure hope it will arrive 'sooner'. -
That sucks about your edd though. By the time they get the 580's back in the new 6 series will be here! Hang in there! -
Tnx Darthgator. I can't wait to play them!
I have good hope that I will get my R3 sooner than my new EDD. The mail I recieved from Dell was sent automatically and my current order status means (or at least it should mean) that the factory has in fact received my 580M.
If they wait any longer though I will just automatically receive a 675M -

With respect to my extended EDD, I sent Dell an e-mail last night telling them that I find this situation totaly unacceptable. If they do not deliver before or on my first EDD I will hold them liable under Dutch law for breach of contract. 5 Weeks (the period from my order date to my first EDD) should be more than enough time to deliver my system. That Dell doesn't have the 580M in supply is not my problem (although Dell does try to make it my problem) but is a circumstance that is for Dell's risk. I indicated that I am open for solutions such as expedited delivery and/or compensation.
In my e-mail I also addressed the 580M throttle problem, which seems to be caused by bad quality control on the GPU paste job and incorrect installation of the backplate and/or thermal pads.
I wrote to Dell that I expect them to deliver to me a system which is adequate (in other words: has a functioning cooling system in place) and does not throttle (or at least not much; The Netherlands are not that warm).
I urged the help desk that will receive my e-mail to inform the factory of this. I will claim full damages (including labour time lost etc) if I need to stay at home after delivery in order to get my R3 fixed.
Also, I told Dell that I do not want to hear any excuses anymore based on the way it has organised it business (for instance, the help desk telling me that they don't know anything and will have to ask "the factory"). As a customer, I conctracted with Dell and Dell alone and I expect an answer from Dell. Their internal organisation is - again - not my problem.
Hope the e-mail helps! -

I replied that no matter what the T&C say, under Dutch law a company should act reasonable and fair towards its customers (as I guess Dell should in other jurisdictions). If Dell had its way, it could postpone delivery forever based on its T&C. This is unreasonable, especially in my case (see my earlier posts). Therefore. Dell is in breach of contract if they do not deliver on the first EDD. After that, I can go to court and ask the judge to force Dell to perform by asking for a fine for every day that they do not deliver.
So, instead of pointing out the T&C to me (which I already reviewed before placing my order; I'm a lawyer) and ignoring my remarks about the 580M throttling problem, they should value their concerned customer and tell me asap (i) whether they actually have all the parts to build my R3 (ii) if it is currently being build (iii) point out to the factory that it better install the GPU cooling system correct and (iv) upgrade my shipping to priority sending. Oh, and thnx for all the help
Let's see what they come up with this time... -
Very nice, post what kind of a response you get from that. Should be interesting.
-
The package is now in Shanghai, China.
No e-mail from Dell in reply to my e-mail though... Guess I'll just have to wait and see whether "the factory" did a good job on the cooling system. -
