Ugh...that's what I'm leaning towards too. However do you think I can just switch my gpu's around and have tech support replace the screen? The only reason I'm hesitant to return is because now this computer with the discounts they given me cost less than $2000 with 3 year complete coverage.

Do what gives you peace of mind. For me, it would be returning everything for a full refund. I wouldn't switch CPUs but that's just me.

Well, I gave them an email this morning and was told that my order was in 'pre-production', with no components allocated as yet... they can give me no further information at all until it enters production :(

    Bah.

Its perfectly fine because AW will actually replace it when you report it. Its just the hassle of scheduling appointments especially if you are busy at work. I got some added rewards however, they replaced the wrong CPU with something better than what I ordered due to being out-of -stock. They gave me 2820QM in place of the original 2720QM I ordered.

Will this work for opening up am17xr3 and replacing wifi card? http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-66-05...GV/ref=sr_1_18?ie=UTF8&qid=1334949375&sr=8-18

My refurb looked like crap so they are replacing it with this. They upgraded the hard drive and CPU should I keep it or get the new r4? I don't think I can get this kind of discount on an r4.....

I also think that this is new since its in production and information looks like this:

    1 5J57X Base,Notebook,STCHB,Configure To Order,Alienware,M17XR3 $350.74
and so on and so on for each part adding up to an Item Total of $1811.47

You wont get the same specs at the same price with R4. I suggest going with that and hopefully you will get a new one and then you decide.

I also just got mine from outlet refurbished and I got a really new one. I know its not new as in still in an AW box but looking at it, it doesnt make sense to be under refurbished :) So give it a chance hehe.

Well, mine has moved to 'in production'. I am guessing that as I didn't receive any emails to the contrary, they are making what I ordered... an r3 with a 6990m.

Any idea how long these orders usually remain 'in production' as a status?

    Tia

    Jant

Answered all my questions myself - the machine shipped today! :D

Looking at the details page for the shipped machine, it looks to include the a 6990M which is a very happy surprise :)

That sounds nearly like mine with the exact same estimated date. I got the 256 SSD rather than a SATA though. I really don't want to wait till the 25th, but that's what I gotta do I guess.

Just ordered M17x with 2860QM and 7970M. It's gonna be a long wait as the est. shipping date is 5/30, that's frigging one full month away.

Got me thinking, though. I usually buy Lenovo laptops and they usually ship in about 2 weeks or less. How about Alienware? when they say one month, is it really one month? or are they just BSing just to be on the safe side?

I asked the salesperson about this and I was told she cannot answer my question "by law"...
I think she meant "by company's policy", not the frigging law... haha...

Sometimes they release early, but usually mean that date time unfortunately. I ordered my dell xps a few years back and got it a week early. Which was about a month away T.T and now that I just realized this it's always been like this!!! 1 month wait time!

Just ordered mine with the 12 months 0% financing, even talked myself into an Orion backpack and some $85 printer!

    External System Details:
System Name and Type: Laptop - Alienware M17x R4
    Monitor: 17.3-inch WideFHD 1920 x 1080 60Hz WLED
    KeyBoard:
    Mouse:
    Battery: 90WHr 9-Cell Primary Battery
    Internal Performance Components:
    Processor: 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3610QM (6MB Cache, up to 3.3GHz w/ Turbo Boost 2.0)
    Memory: 6GB DDR3 at 1600MHz (2DIMMS)
    Hard Drive: 500GB 7,200 RPM SATA 3Gb/s
    Video Card: 2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon™ HD 7970M

Roughly $1600 before tax and the bag/printer, sweet deal for this much power. The only bad thing is the estimated delivery date is 5 weeks from today: 06/04/2012 ...but I should have my printer and orion backpack by Friday!

Just contemplating the 17x or 18x now - any reason to choose one over the other? I have an 11x now (which I love, and will be keeping), just need a bigger screen and more graphics / CPU horsepower. Will be doing some CAD (SolidWorks) but mostly gaming. Am I right in thinking there is no SLi option in the 17x?
Other than those questions, I'm sat here waiting for Dell UK to list the 0% finance again for these bad boys, then I'm pulling the trigger!
    Thanks all!

I'm curious about this too, my date is also 5/25, but yet I'm seeing people getting it WAY before then. I ordered last Tuesday (4/24). I shot Order Support an email asking what the actual status was on not just my arrival date, but the switch to Ivy.

Saw a post on another forum earlier that made me curious. The poster was asking pretty much the same question, and ended up getting an alert when he logged into his Dell Account that his CPU was now switched to the Ivy's, from his previous Sandy choice.

on the phone with support now, he's making the change. Just give them a call or email the order support line and tell them which one you want to make the change to.

I've changed to a 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3720QM (6MB Cache, up to 3.6GHz w/ Turbo Boost 2.0), once the update is reflected on my Dell account, I'll post my shipping date.

I'm on The Epp acct due work and I have the same contact from the beginning of order( I ask for US sales department). From what she told me(I wanted to update my processor to the new ivy)she couldn't update my order due to it's in the final production testing stage and it's showed as shipped which mean she can't update nor cancel the order. But she told me that it'll take a couple day to get and she'll call me back on Friday to confirm if I still want to upgrade free of charge. But of course I'll have to wait another 10 months to get it( that's how it feel but more likely a month). But looking at, even asked around, checked out facebook and read an article stating that "any prior order m17x r4 will get an updated processor" so hopefully crossing my fingers that I get the ivy bridge!!! Sorry for a long story but u asked for it. Lol

UPDATE: Many people who have ordered the M17x R4 by April 25th or earlier have been recieving their orders much quicker than expected.
So if you have a ETA at around May 24th-25th expect to recieve your orders this week or next week!

    Me too!
Anyone's order that says R4 you automatically have an Ivy Bridge REGARDLESS what your order says.

i buy it in the 19/4 and it already ship in the 30/4 ... so i guess i don't get the boost up :( and even when i asked in the tech support they told me i don't get it :( not fair

    edit :
in the order it write R4 that mean i will have to get the ivy bridge ? cuz what bill write is that the motherboard is supported only the ivy bridge so there is a way i will get some other motherboard ?

You don't need to bother PM'ing him. It's already been stated over and over that everyone will be upgraded to IB if you ordered an i7.

If you ordered an i5 you will receive a SB as i5 IB isn't out (pretty sure you can only order an i5 on the M14x so I don't think this applies to anyone in this thread).

Any one else receiving an m17x earlier than expected? If so when was your order placed? And anyone paranoid about Ivy Bridge relax anything with "R4" automatically gets an ivy REGARDLESS of what sales reps tell you.

Saw the other speculation thread on main forum was closed. Figured I'd post here.

So I got a response phone call from the email I sent yesterday inquiring about Ivy Bridge (already know all R4's get the upgrade) and when I may receive my machine.

The fellow (Indian Accent) gave me typical machine responses, similar to what I got on the email (email answered literally ZERO questions) concerning my questions. What he said kind of confused me, or perhaps I misunderstood, but it was something like: "I wanted to inform you that your system got an upgraded part." and then proceeded to tell me that "No upgrades are showing on your system.". Confused the crap out of me. Whatever, I know I'm getting the Ivy upgrade either way.

What he said next was that my system was in VERY early stages of production, and that I should expect the system to arrive (of course) on my EDD of 5/25. He then proceeded to reassure me that he'd keep tabs on the process, and call me again on Monday to give me an update.

So according to Bill's IM session with the Dell guy after BOM'ing my SKU my system looks like it may be shipping. Yet according to the guy on the phone, my system isn't even CLOSE to being done. What gives haha.

My Rep. told me on Monday mine was going to ship soon.
After hearing about people getting theirs early I really just want mine! This is all so frustrating! I have overnight shipping so I'd get it the next day I just need to know if mine shipped or not

I'm assuming mine will ship this week, and I'll get it next week. But I'm going just by what Bill told me, and what other users are experiencing. I ordered 4/24 for the record, last Tuesday.

I just found out today that Max Payne 3 won't be coming out until the end of the month for us PC users (WHAT THE FUNK?), so I'm even more peeved now haha. I was dying to get it (laptop) yesterday, now I'm just "half-dead" if you know what I mean. The 2 weeks wait for Diablo means I don't necessarily need the machine until then. If I get it early I'll beat Arkham City and play some Skyrim, but that's about it.

I'm hoping it just arrives in one piece, with all the right parts, and without any weird errors/noises.

If shebeast means computer that is amazing. I wish mine would get here soon too. Did you do anything to make this happen?

Also, if call and say that I am leaving for my wedding at the end of May (which is not a lie), and need the laptop before than, will they hurry it up?

When was your order place and how it's shipping might play a factor in it. Also ask for free overnight shipping... If it's not already..

You placed your order a day after me, and you might get yours today? :( Where's mine!

Just now received an email update out of nowhere:

I wanted to personally thank you for recently purchasing the ALIENWARE M17XR4 laptop.
As you may have heard, Intel has officially announced the availability of their latest Quad-Core 3rd Generation processors. In keeping with our tradition of delivering the latest and greatest technology to gamers, I wanted to let you know that we’ll be upgrading your order from the 2nd Generation Intel processor to a 3rd Generation processor of the same tier automatically, at no additional charge. Your expected delivery date will not be affected by this change, and your system may even have already shipped.

Your order invoice will still show the 2nd Generation Intel processor that you originally ordered, but you can go to your Windows Control Panel, System, and you will see 3rd Generation Intel processor listed under Processor.

We value your loyalty and hope that this news is a pleasant surprise. If you have any questions regarding your order, or wish to cancel or return it, don’t hesitate to contact us at 1-800-247-2076, ext 2.

    Best,
    Frank Azor
    General Manager, Alienware

It's not a terrible choice, but I hope you at least went with the 120Hz 3D screen.

I went with the 675m just because nvidia offers so much more than AMD even without 3D the difference between 60hz and 120hz is huge. I'll be overclocking to 560ti speeds, and when the 680m is available I'll just upgrade.

Meh, I'd have gone dual 675M's in your shoes then. More of a future-proof, with less money spent.
