I ordered an m17x R3 on January 2, with shipping to NA, free upgrade to next business day. I've always heard AW ships products early and was hoping to recieve my order before the EDD of the 18th. I've called dell but I don't think they know what's going on, she only repeats to me what I can find out on my own, kind of a useless customer service if you ask me. Anyone else having issues?

Hi guys, would like to apologise for the long-winded post in advance!
I read this was the right place to inquire on configuration options and im thinking of ordering a M17x R3 (living in the UK), and have tentatively specced it out as follows:
Intel® Core i7 Processor 2670QM (2.20Ghz, 6MB, 4C)
English Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium (64 BIT)
2GB GDDR5 AMD® Radeon HD 6990M
8192MB 1333MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM [2x4096]
500GB Momentus XT Solid State Hybrid Drive
44cm(17.3") WideFHD (1920 x 1080) WLED LCD
DVD+/-RW (DVD, CD read and write)
Killer Wireless-N 1103 - EUR
I'm not too technical when it comes to hardware and the like, and was wondering if you guys could help me.
First off, in regards to the graphics card, another laptop that I have been looking at is the Asus G74SX, which comes with a 3GB GDDR5 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 560M. From what I have read the Radeon 6990M looks to be the better card, but will the extra 1GB on the 560M make a significant difference?
My second question involves the hard drive. The M17x base option was the 750GB (7,200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive. But for £5 more, I could upgrade to the 500GB Momentus XT Solid State Hybrid Drive. I have read into all this and it seems that this would be the better option performance wise? Storage capacity is not much of an issue for me..would the Hybrid Drive be the better choice? Would it be also right to assume that the 500GB Hybrid drive > 1500GB HDD performance wise? (as the Asus has 750GBx2 HDD)
Finally, regarding wireless connectivity, the base option was the Dell Wireless 1501 wireless-N, and for £30 more, I could upgrade to the Killer Wireless-N 1103. Has anyone used this before/is there a big difference?
Sorry if I some of sounds newbish, not too technical as mentioned earlier. Thanks a lot! -
I just bought my M17x R3 off the Dell outlet today. I cancelled an order I had for an M14x because of the 20% off outlet sales deal.
- Intel i7-2820QM Processor (8M Cache, 2.30 GHz, Turbo 3.4 GHz)
- nVidia GTX460M with 1.5 GB
- 8 GB 1600 MHz memory
- 320 GB HDD 5400 RPM (plan to replace this myself)
- Intel-Pro Wireless 6300
- 1920*1080 120Hz 3D display
I want good performance, but I don't plan to overclock or anything too serious. I chose this one because of the 2.3GHz processor. I know most new ones are coming with Nvidia GTX500 series cards. Am I going to be disappointed by the 460M?
Also, I have read that Optimus is not available on the 3D displays. How is the battery life doing normal tasks such as web browsing? If I'll be playing games, I'll be plugged in, so no big deal there.
I got the thing for $1750 including tax, 2 day shipping, and a 2 year accidental warranty. Good deal? -
I paid that much for one with an I7 2860QM, GTX580 on the outlet this morning...

Shipped this morning! If it takes as long as most of my mail I should have it in 7 days!
After calling them, it turns out the change was because of the APO address. They added a month to cover the possible ship time to an APO address. Can't wait!!! -
Mine arrived today, will go pick it after work
-
I just called the order status line and got the same deal. Shipped January 16th, EDD January 18th. -
Still, it seems like a pretty solid deal. -
So I placed my order on the 3rd and as of today (the 12th) my M17x is still in production at Dell. Is this normal? My rep pretty much assured me the laptop would ship before the estimated date of the 20th.
-
Been looking here and there for an answer... maybe some you guys know what's what... I know it looks silly but is there a difference between their estimated delivery date and the estimated ship date?!... Because for me they are the same (on the statuses)... and if the EDD is the time I'm gonna get it to my door then it will be late cause it's still showing in production... EDD 01/16/12 5-7 plain shipping... we're the 12th... and haven't received an email stating that it's delayed or shipped... Sick of waiting I must say
I just hope my dec. 29th order is not putting me in the hdd waiting line!!!!
-
Hey Darkdomino... Like I just stated... mine is still in production too... I hope they don't BS us just to make us wait a little longer everytime...
P.S. On your pic I see u carrying a gun next to a boeing 737 (eyebrow over the windshield) I hope you don't plan to hurt my baby!!! (I'm a 737 engineer)
-
heh, I'm afraid not. That's a screen cap from an airplane level on Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days .... I myself have to take my shoes off and wait in line to get on the plane like everyone else
-
Hey seems HDD are causing the delay on delivery. Heres an email for dell rep
The order is Pending Production because of a Part Shortage and the recovery date is given as 13th. The Status will change to “ In Production” after the 13th and the estimated date of delivery is on or before the 20th of Jan.

I'm caught in the loop: ''Yes sir it will ship in the next 2-3 business days'' since monday so just not believing them anymore... originally I was told that it was shipped on jan. 6th...
-
I'm a little annoyed. They promised me my M17x would ship today and my tracker is still "in production"
Ugh... C'mon Dell!
UPDATE: I talked to another rep "Laura" and she assured me that her tracking tool reported my M17x as shipped. The order tracker on my end still shows "In production" ... She was unable to give me a tracking number and told me to call customer service. -
-
She told me, beyond any doubt, that it had been "shipped to carrier"
I asked her why my tracker still said "In Production" and she gave me all this BS about how the tools Dell gave her were "limited" and that she didn't know.
It's really frustrating... Why does Dell not give their reps to tools to know what the F is going on in their own company? You're telling me they shipped a 2000 dollar laptop and DIDN'T LOG IN A TRACKING NUMBER and update the tracker?
Sorry, I'm just kinda frustrated. There's a word for what Dell is doing, and it's called "the runaround" -
HILARIOUS UPDATE ON MY ORDER: After all this talk of shipping early and such I decided I would try to call the Dell status number, because sometimes it gives more info. I called 1-800-433-9014 and the wonderful computer lady proceeds to inform me that my laptop shipped on January 17. Wait, what? Yea, apparently Dell has built a time machine. -
Ivy in da house!!! XD
i have no idea y bios detect at 1.7ghz... mb is es version -
What the...are you using it on a M17x R3? please tell us that!!!
Edit: then i see 90w and 4mb l3 cache? nope i guess. -
Well I just got the dreaded your order is delayed email
was meant to be here on the 17th now it's the 30th
boooo dell! I ordered on the 26th.
-
beta version of bios... alot issue now...
ya.. i jus plug in 90watt ac adaptor.. hahaha ... lazy to bring big adaptor -
Hi Worldedit ,
please can you tell me if the HyperX SSD is a good disk for M17X R3?
It works as sata 3 on both slot?
Thank You .
my order is frozen in working from 5 January 2012 edd is 30 January 2012
PS: Ivy Bridge can work on M17X R3? -
if desktop ivy can work in old mainboards, i guess notebook versions will work. however it depend on BIOS support. -
-
I know right. save yourselves the frustration and *never* contact Dell online chat support. They have no clue what's going on over there.

Called customer service, talked with some guy who's name I couldn't pronounce if my life depended on it. He told me to get a tracking number I'd have to call a different department, he transferred me to a department which was apparently closed on weekends.
I'm not even trying to get my order rushed or anything, I just want to know the status... It's been in production for over 10 days now, and I'm curious to know how things are proceeding. I've gotten a different story every time I've called. I guess all there is to do is to wait for the estimated ship date. (Though every rep I've talked to has said the estimated ship date is never right and that they always ship earlier)
So yeah... I'm pretty much done trying to call Dell. It's making my head hurt at this point. -
-
What is the likelihood that they shipped my laptop without updating the tracker. That seems odd...
-
Anyway, worst case they ship on the 17th right? I mean the magical time traveling computer lady says so. -
Yeah and then she tells me that MY order, supposedly shipping jan. 16th, was received on june 20th!!! I hate the way she says ''20th'' everytime!!!
She must be right or maybe Dell doesn't really exist... it's a made up thing to make fun of us who knows?! AHAHAH!!! -
I can't wait... Is it February yet?!?
M17x r3
Intel Core i7 2860
16 GB 1600 MHz ram
17.3 inch 1920x1080p WideFHD WLED with Nvidia 3D vision Bundle
2 GB DDR5 Geforce GTX 580M graphics card
750 GB 7200 rpm HDD
Blu-Ray
and most important 4 year advanced protection warranty!
I am so stoked, I've been doing a happy dance ever since this thing went into production on 1/13, prelim ship date is February 2nd. I cannot wait...
Good luck to all who are waiting, I hope everything goes smooth for you guys, just as I'm hoping the ordering process goes smoothly for myself!
*Whoops, ignore my sig, that was my old signature, that I forgot to update, that laptop listed has since run into some serious technical difficulty, see my "out with the old... sort of..." thread for details. -
-
Lol, well after the email yesterday saying it's delayed till the end of the month I checked the status online today and it's shipped, tracking number and all.
-
-
Mine has changed to In Production EDD 20th Jan...... Pretty well excited now.
-
As mine still said pre-production I rang Dell UK to find out what the delay was. After 20 mins on hold they told me there was a shortage of the black cases themselves and they expected new stock tomorrow (17th Jan) and it should change to production tomorrow or the day after.
I have just gone back onto my Dell order page and it has now changed to production! ?
Happy now anyway -
Nice one !!! whens your edd ?? This weekend should be fun
-
Not till the 25th... (ordered on 6th)
Sounds like you'll need some Red Bull for the weekend then -
Hi all,
mine this morning 07:00 AM has changed to In Production EDD 30th January, and this morning the BackPack Orion 17 was delivered by TNT .
Only one thing , the tracking link on Dell Order Status don't work. -
Mine was apparently shipped this morning as was said through the order status line, was shipped today, EDD on or before the 18th, but still no tracking number. I called customer service and they said it hasn't shipped yet and they're still waiting for the carrier to pick it up. When I talked to them last week they said it was ready to be picked up and should have shipped friday. No luck yet, all i know is i'm never ordering from dell again.
-
Call the EPP line. Regular reps don't know and will make up anything to get you off the phone.
-
I tried calling the order status number earlier and they knew nothing, even though the Order Status computerized message claims it shipped the 17th. -
Called again at about 5:00 today (end of business) and got a different rep. She (apparently seeing that I had called 3 times before) told me what I already knew. Told me that the laptop was waiting for carrier pickup and kept telling me not to worry and that they'd call. I asked her what the delay was... Why has my laptop been sitting at the warehouse for over 2 days? and why they hadn't updated the tracker for me? She didn't have any answers, didn't know... tried to transfer me to a different department, but I declined.
It's frustrating that Dell has my laptop sitting in a warehouse waiting to be shipped. Nobody over there seems to know WHY it hasn't been picked up yet. Every major carrier picks up on business days, so it should have shipped today if Dell is telling the truth. They've lied so many times to me that I'm really exhausted trying to get answers from them. -
I guess I will just let it go for now, but if it doesn't ship tomorrow I will give the EPP line a call.
