I cant find the original Vbios anywhere. Idle it remains in the 50-55c range, However running a burn in furmark test the temperature only ever increases which worries me... If it doesn't stablise wont the card burn out at some point? Also having issues with sound, might resort to just buying a sound card. Thanks for all your help again

Maybe someone can post a stock vbios file for you here? It's easy enough to get a copy using the button on the main screen of GPU-Z.
If it is overheating the first thing that happens is the card throttles and your voltage and clock drop. If this does not resolve the overheat trigger then the card goes into it's 'I'm in trouble' power state where the minimum clock and voltage are used in an attempt to keep the machine running - well not exactly running, more of a crawl!
If all this happens quickly or the temp does not drop then the machine simply shuts down.
What temp did Furmark go up to? Sounds fine at idle, unless your fan is ramping up to very loud to keep this temp?
As for the sound, it can be very frustrating fixing this from the people I saw having issues, you might find that the driver from IDG works fine, this was used in the 'fix' I saw.
Others have opted for a USB sound option just for simplicity.
-
Managed to get the sound working! It was a bit of a nightmare to say the least. As for the temps in furmark, to complete the 1080p test the temp will rise to 71c, last night however I was playing a relatively low demanding game and temps kept consistent around the 57-61c mark. I was just worried the card was not throttling as my old 675m used to throttle around 67c which was quite the nuisance. -

!
The 675m throttling was not actually temp triggered, the card would randomly switch to it's low-power state, P1, and was a bug never fixed. This is a case where a modded vbios would fix it by matching P0 and P1 power states. Just another nail in the coffin of the 580m/675m debacle.
Low to mid 70's c is common from postings I have seen on here when stressed so nothing to be concerned with. Different cards have different operating ranges so only compare like-for-like if you can.
My 'hate' temp for earlier cards was 76c. In fact if I saw numbers consistently in the 70's c it needed attention IMO. These 980m's run way hotter, often in the low 80's c after an extended session....
Sounds to me like you might have headroom for overclocking? -
What do you suggest with over clocking?

Before you do anything you want to set up an on-screen-display of your cards status while you game or bench it. I use EVGA PrecisionX 16 ATM since for me it works better in the games I am playing currently. MSI afterburner is a popular choice though. Just make sure you accept the option to install the server element (rivatuner).
Go to the monitoring page and select the stats you want to see and make sure you check the box for OSD for each item. Start with FPS, Temp, Voltage and maybe GPU Utilization, although strictly speaking it's not a great indicator for seeing how it is performing.
Go gaming and get familar with the numbers, they should change during things like game loads or cut scenes but this is game dependent.
If you get that far ask again and I'll suggest some settings. Always get basemark numbers before you make any changes.
A temp in the 60's when benching or gaming is usually (in my experience) a sign of good overhead for pushing it. But just game and enjoy it if it performs great with your games and you don't feel like a new hobby?
Of all the cards over a year old now the 680m/780m appear to have the lowest failure rate, the 580m/675m was enough to drive people to consoles!! I even stayed up one night for a two hour phone conference with Dell US management, techies, and a bunch of NBR'ers about the problems... back in the days when Dell had other plans for AW.

Hallo, is NVIDIA Quadro K4000M compatible with M17x R3?

Hello!
Which driver working on Windows Vista?
This is not: 335.23 , 340.52
R2 and 680M -
Ok so I went on laptops2go and downloaded the nvidia 358.91 driver( thats on the nvidia website as the latest for the 680m) I also downloaded the .inf file.
I tried to run the driver and it failed (as per usual). I then dropped the modded .inf file into the display driver folder of the 358.91 folder. I then ran the driver installer as an administrator. It does the full installation and seems to install fine. But when I restart the computer it boots back up but nvidia experience cannot recognise the driver. This then seems to default back to the integrated driver and I have to reinstall the old driver 344.60 that was on it before. This also happens to be the last driver posted on here by the great J95 himself.
I'm trying to play fallout 4 but the game doesn't load and I just get a blank screen with the blue spinning wheel in the middle. When I go to task manager it says that fallout 4 is not responding. I then close the game. I tried uninstalling and then downloading the game again but I still get the same issue. I tried running Mad Max and Metal Gear Solid V and they both run fine.
I'm on an m17x r3 with a 680m graphics card (win 7). The latest driver with the modded INF file doesn't seem to work nor does one from last month. J95 used to post the good stuff on here but since then I cannot ugrade my laptop any further and hope that the problem is driver error rather than something else.
The steam app has admin access as does the games exe files too.
Any other place I can get the latest drivers to work on my m17x r3? Bit miffed that Nvidia still hasn't bothered to get this working for these laptops through experience. but hey ho.
Heres pics

Hi, I am running GTX680m in an Alienware M17Rx3 on Windows 10 64bit - the Nvidia driver I'm using is 359.00 Win_10 64 International with laptop2go inf
; NVIDIA Windows Vista / 7 / 8 / 10 (64 bit) Display INF; http://www.laptopvideo2go.com; Pieter's INF version 6.035
My Fallout 4 runs fine full screen
if anyone needs any info on windows 10 I will try and help -
Hi My laptop just corrupted on windows 7 for like the 5th time since buying it in 2012 (another reason to hate this OS and no... I did not use any dodgy programs etc) am considering upgrading to windows 10 but with the nvidia drivers being difficult to install on the M17xR3 with a 680m graphics card am worried it might not work. Any tips on how to get this working properly?
-
Happy New year Everyone
#gogul1 I installed windows 10 on my alienware M17xR3 with a GTX680m GFX card as a fresh install(it kept stalling as an upgrade)
I downloaded the windows 10 image and burnt a disk the just booted the laptop on it and it installed. - didn't have too many problems but you will need to download all the windows 7 drivers from dell for your laptop first...something's wouldn't install until you had the majority of the drivers installed to stop them being flagged up in device manager( and I thing the gfx driver was one of them so maybe do that last)
laptop2go and the modified inf sorted the gfx card -though sometimes I have to tell it to reload the driver after an automated windows update as I haven't worked out how to turn auto windows update off for graphic's driver.
any problem's and I will gladly try and help -
Thanks I used to have a folder with the drivers for the dell laptop on a disc somewhere but had to install them in a specific way last time so am curious if its the same way this time around too?
-
Maybe - I did it the suck and see method - lol
then I just googled for other problems. Win10 is a big change interface style from windows 7 (I never bothered with windows 8 after looking at it)
it looks like Microsoft want your pc to look like a phone - I'm on android so its not too different but things I used to do and find easily too a while to find and do in windows 10 My fiencee hates the change on her alienware so I just installed the free windows shell program that makes your version of windows look and act like windows 7 -
That might be good to do then

Guys, I need Help....
Several days before, i just lost my laptop display after repasting My GPU card process. I manage to get it back using removal of CMOS Battery process, and put it back. But now, the BIOS got back into it's default settings and I got problem everytime I went to switch the BIOS setting for set the primary display to PEG and for disabling the internal on board graphic setting. The screen go back to dark after I save the setting. Does that mean my 680m card have faulty since the display on my screen is always gone everytime I set that card as primary ? -
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
It might be a driver issue, grabbing at straws here but worth a try I think. Use DDU with the default bios settings to strip out all driver components. If the 680m is visible in the device manager then a second option to try is removing the driver AND the software from the properties in Device Manager.
Restart and change the bios settings (I assume you have an unlocked bios?) and see if it tries to install a driver?
After that I'm out of ideas.
Actually one other just came to mind and that is a reseat and clean of the edge connector since that was when the problem started? You don't need to separate the heatsink to remove the whole assembly, just a bit of wiggling...B4n6k3 likes this. -
I try your 2nd option above just to be sure.I know how to remove the driver from properties, but how to remove the software ? Do I need to remove the on board graphic driver too ? And if it come to last resort for cleaning the connector, any idea how to clean it properly ? I read a lot of horror story about how fragile the connector and it's motherboard socket also. I realize I need to clean it, just don't have the courage to do it. If anyone can provide me the correct method for cleaning both of it I really appreciated. I post the result ASAP.
Update : Nope, Option 2 isn't worked bro MickyD. it still no display, but the system boot just fine. Reseat the CMOS battery again now.Last edited: Jan 4, 2017 -

For the edge connector on the board, do not undo the four heatsink retaining screws but just the two holding the card in-place. You need to remove the fan but at this point you can lift out the complete assembly.
You want the edge connector to be completely clean and grease free. I use medical swabs, IPA soaked. You can get these from any pharmacy as injection site swabs and found in the diabetes supplies. For the edge connector this is not so easy but a can of compressed air can clean out any detritus collected there. I also like to wiggle the card a little to improve the connection. There is a spray de-greaser used in the motor trade to clean brake parts that might be a better bet to clean the connector on the MB but I've never used it and I'd be concerned about the stuff getting on anything else. It claims to leave no residue so should be OK, but unless anyone else has used it's a bit risky.
Good luck.Last edited: Jan 4, 2017 -

Hi guys, I am very lucky to be able to find this forum here where people installed the GTX 680m on the m17x r3 laptops.
Is there anyone here that could help me with this? I have replaced the faulty GTX 460m with theGTX 680m but as you know there is issues with drivers or else and I cant make it work.
Could anyone help me? like where to get the drivers that works or what I have to do.
Many Thanks

Hi Sir, I am trying to install the drivers to the GTX680m on my M17X R3 and where can I get the modded INF file? -
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
The inf files are posted there when each new driver is released. You only need to replace the inf file inside the driver file structure after the install fails.
Good luck. -
Will update you once I done it

Hey. After updating my windows i wanted to update my nvidia driver for my m17x r3 gtx 680m. The problem is that with the new driver 382.05 and windows 10 x64 latest update i cannot edit and save nvdmi.inf. It says I don't have acces to open the file and doesn't let me save it.
I have tried to save to desktop and the original file to delete and after to copy back but didn't work either.
Thanks in advance. -

Do you use 'testsigning' needed to allow the driver to install?
Windows has probably installed a driver as well since MS pushed out a new NV driver to go with the creators update.
Try GFE as well and see if that can install, it worked for someone that tried it a couple of weeks ago.

Sure I can do that. Few things to think about.
What timezone are you in and what times suit you best to allow an hour or so of on-line time?
Try to put together a list of things you'd like to achieve and priority.
Remind me of your model/OS/Panel Hz.
If I can help I will.

My Alienware model is a M17x R3, service tag: J8YN5Q1, changed from GTX 460m to GTX 680m 4GB. Windows 10
I'm not sure were to check the panel Hz
The photos is the alienware tag and the photo of the GTX 680m 4GB that is installed.
Many Thanks

-
So no answers?

I searched, it wont boot, or post, so i cant install drivers. I have BIOS set for PEG, still no boot or post

Im not sure the guy i bought it from had an alienware m18x r2 i think he said.

I don't know if this applies to the kepler but normaly green PCB means it's an MSI card, blue ones are Clevo / Dell.
When you start your AW with the card, the screen is black but does it start up normally? Do you hear the notebook start up and load it's things etc.? If the answer is yes, I might have a solution for your problem.
Did you upgrade your BIOS btw? If not you can upgrade it to the updated and unlocked version from SLV7:
