It this the 306.23 driver? See I need clarification. I wont install anything unless I can verify exactly what it is and where I can get it. I'm very cautious at this point and one false move = failure.

MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Yes the NV link is 306.23 and is directly from nvidia. Make sure you select custom and clean install. I don't think the ini file will help since the installer runs and completes, just individual components fail, but worth a shot, it's quite simple to rename the original .ini and put the one j95 linked you to in the folder, then re-run the installer.
Caution is a good thing with this stuff when you don't understand exactly what you are doing.
But it does seem to be a problem with the driver install getting stuck on something so just a little perseverance should produce the desired result.
-
It's the Clevo one so it won't work, just follow SlickDude80 here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/672230-m17x-r3-680m-compatability-24.html
laptopvideo2go.com is : NVIDIA_DEV.11A0.01 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M"
Clevo : NVIDIA_DEV.11A0.0490.1028 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M " -
Download : NVIDIA DRIVERS 306.23WHQL replace both files in the Display.Driver folder an you're done!
-
Great work guys is someone going to make a guide that would be amazing (unless someone already posted only went through 6-7 pages of posts)
-
So I install the latest drivers now and then find the display.driver folder after and replace the files?
Where will this folder most likely be?
EDIT tried to install the driver but NVIDIA INSTALLER CANNOT CONTINUE THE GRAPHICS DRIVER COULD NOT FIND COMPATIBLE HARDWARE.
I tried to remove the original 680m driver from the devices and printers list. It is now gone. How can I get it back?
Nope restarted computer, the nvidia installer unpacked the folder and then came back with same error again. Tried to copy the two files over to the display.driver folder and then run set up again but still it does not work.
Where the 680M was listed under the devices and printers list is now a standard VGA Graphics Adapter and that has a small yellow triangle with an exclamation mark.
EDIT: I am now currently running the nvidia installer supplied by Eurocom again and am actually past the original error message and doing a custom clean install. Why does that work and not the new one you guys recommended?
Also why does my laptop seem to be the only one that hates me?
Ok driver installer minus the 3d controller and vision. I can open the NV control panel for 680m but when I test it on SKYRIM the game does not recognise the graphics card. so its not actually installed even though the nvidia drivers installed anyway.
Confused? Try being me.
Can it be possible to just collate the instructions into a numerical list so that I can follow step by step what needs to be done as the drivers supplied by eurocom clearly dont work properly. I tried to install the latest drivers on top of the ones modded by eurocom but it still says graphics hardware could not be found.
How can one install and the other fail? -
Hi There,
my installation is quite simple. here is what i do:
1) Remove and run driver sweeper (before i remove the current gpu of my laptop).
2) Power Off
3) remove old gpu, install new GPU
4) power on and go straight to BIOS.
5) Disable IGP and restart.
6) Windows does not recognized the 680m.
7) Run driver (supplied by eurocom). Driver installation Failed because the driver package did not have my card hardware id (nvcv.cfg).
8) mod the nvcv.cfg to include my hardware ids (this guide is in in this post ~ page 20~25)
9) now run the driver installation. Installation successful.
10) Done. enjoy my 680m
hope that help. -
Confirm your GPU Device ID. (Control Panel-Device Manager-Display Adapter-Details-select Hardware Ids.
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_04901028&REV_A1
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_04901028
1-Download and install 7-Zip x64 7-Zip
2-Uninstall all Nvidia drivers in Programs and Features - reboot.
3-Right click Nvidia 306.23 driver-7-Zip-choose extract to "306.23-notebook-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql"
4-Now open the extracted 306.23-notebook-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql folder open Display.Driver folder copy and replace both files with the ones I provided (right click Nvidia .inf GTX 680M.zip-7-Zip extract-same as Nvidia 306.23 driver)
5-Run installer
6-Choose custom install-next-check clean install option.
Done!
Edit : This zip has only Clevo GTX 680M IDs with M17X R3 -
OK so I used driver sweeper and cleaned the bad boy out now in device manager the NVIDIA 680M GPU shows up underneath the Intel 3000 HD gpu. Thats a good sign isn't it?
However I look at the two and dont see an option to look at the ids in the drop down panel. Where is it?
Sorry for being too literal but if its not in the list of things to do I cannot do it (SELECT HARDWARE IDS?)
Why 7ZIP? will this allow me to open up the nvidia installer without it actually going into the installation side and allow me access to the display.driver folder?
Also if the file is for CLEVO only then why shoud I use it?
When I look at the 680m in device manager properties it says "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information(in the registry) is incomplete or damaged (code 19)"
Does that sound interesting?
Edit: Extracted the display.driver folder now.
OK FOUND HARDWARE IDS.
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_04BA1028&REV_A1
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_04901028
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&CC_030000
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&CC_0300
What do I do with this information?
Any chance a step by step guide again so that I don't get confused. Just read through pages 20 to 25 and I got that I need to change the IDS but where do I put them? Just trying to make sure everything in the file goes where it needs to exactly. -
Just use J95 inf package. put the inf files (replace) inside the display driver folder.
then just run setup -
NOPE! NVIDIA INSTALLER CANNOT CONTINUE THIS GRAPHICS DRIVER COULD NOT FIND COMPATIBLE GRAPHICS HARDWARE.
Doesn't work I'm afraid. J95 said these were clevo inf files and my info is a little different to his hardware IDS.
His are:
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_04 901028&REV_A1
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_04 901028
Mine are:
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_04 BA1028&REV_A1
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_04 BA1028
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&CC_030000
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&CC_0300 -
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS = GTX 680M
04BA1028&REV_A1 = Alienware m17X R3
Use Nvidia .inf GTX 680M.zip (ALL GTX 680M entries matching M17X R3)
I don't recommend Driver Sweeper How to: Remove your Nvidia GPU Drivers.
I own an Alienware M17X R3 for 9 months never had bsods always check games install folder.
7Zip is for extracting without installing.
1-Uninstall Nvidia drivers in Programs and Features-Reboot
2-Install Nvidia 306.23
3-Let it extract
4-Installation failed -no problem-Close dialog.
5-Open Display.Driver folder copy and replace both files Nvidia .inf GTX 680M.zip (unzip first)
6-Run the installer within the extracted Nvidia folder.
7-Choose custom install-next-Check clean install option.
Follow these instructions don't skip anything. -
Followed exactly. STILL SAME ERROR.
Doesn't work I'm afraid.
I installed driver sweeper and 7zip so I know the ssd takes installations. -
Mine .Inf is for M17X R3 3D.
I will re-edit .Inf. -
thanks J95 appreciate all your help so far.
-
-Replace with these ones
-Run the installer within the extracted Nvidia folder. -
Thanks I will try it when I get home, what did you change in it?
(although I get the feeling it will never work for me as I have always had issues with my M17X, it just doesnt behave like everyone elses)
Also, you mean the setup.exe thats contained outside of the display.driver folder don't you? -
I added 04BA1028 to the entries.
Yes that one. -
Fingers crossed! If it works a tiny little bit of pee might leak out in excitement.
So the files you amended... Are they the reason the nvidia installer cannot find the hardware? Just curious as to how this tiny issue can cause the problem. What does the installer require to run successfully?
(for future knowledge) -
There are 3 sections with 3 entries each that must be edited(nvdm.inf)
A very good option is Notepad++ 6.1.7 I use the portable one Notepad++ v6.1.7 - Current Version
Setup scans the device hardware ID matched with a hardware ID listed in the .inf. -
Thanks the drivers installed brilliantly but now the 680M has disappeared out of the devices list and all the games try to run on the integrated graphics card. I don't think it worked...
Yay! I just spent a load of money and time on nothing. I was assured the 680m would work now I feel conned. -
can you disable the igp?
-
Not sure how and if i did would it cause issues? I will need a guide but I don't think it will help much. I can access the NV control panel and change all my games to run on the NV GPU but they obviously cant because the card is no longer recognised.
Anyone had this issue after installation? -
1-Set windows power plan to high performance click battery icon-More power plans-Check high performance
2-Open Nvidia Control panel-Manage 3D Settings-Cuda Gpus check 680M-Power management mode-check High performance.
3-Click Program settings-Add every game .exe (right click game shortcut-select open file location)-now for every .exe set Cuda Gpus to 680M, it seems redundant but do it anyway.
For Nvidia control panel open windows control panel or desktop right click. -
I did I'm afraid...Device is no longer in the list which means its as good as not being in there in the first place surely?
I uninstalled the graphic drivers again to make sure and now theres a standard VGA Graphics Adapter listed in my hardware list with the same hardware IDS as my nvidia card had. -
C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\Control Panel Client\nvcplui
-
C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\Control Panel Client\nvcplui
yep thats the control panel, it works very slow too and I edited my last post. -
Install 306.23.
which is your system bios? -
Is your 680m listed in your device manager?
-
I don't have the 680M, it should be listed when you used driver sweeper deleted everything that was shown ?
your system bios ?
Install successful ? -
"which is your system bios?" what do you mean?
(just installing nvidia drivers again) -
Search- type System Information.
-
So my BIOS version is A10 and my SMBIOS is 2.7
nvidia re installed now.
Devices does not list it again. -
Search -DXDIAG run 64 bit mode then click save.
-
yep its saved as dxdiag file
-
Open the text file look for Display Devices and errors.
-
cant see anything about errors in the display devices but only the intel hd 3000 device is listed. no 680m.

You need to flash the unlocked A10bios and disable IGP, that should have been done before installing the 680M.
-
WOW thats sounds painful... sooo I'm screwed?
(I wish that upgradeyourlaptop had told me this instead of "just run the exe file" -
Here is the link : [tested & working] M17x R3 *unlocked* BIOS A10
This one has the Sata 3 fix Downloads
I did a blind flash with the sata III fix, you should flash within windows daddyz could help you with this. -
I'm so excited, I should receive my card tomorrow, weeeeeeeeeee, get that 680m in, yay, weeee. I can't wait to do some modding to get that sucker in, haha.
I haven't looked yet, but has anyone gotten the AW/Dell 680m infs for the newest drivers yet, 106.XX ones? -
Will I need to uninstall the whole thing and start from scratch again?
-
Uninstall Nvidia drivers, if something goes wrong just enable IGP.
Just plug the power cord and unplug everything mouse external drive ethernet turn off WIFI etc.
Wait for daddyz to give you some info. -
Hi Gogul1,
1. uninstall all Nvidia driver.restart.
2. before windows start, keep pressing F8 and go to safe mode.
3. run driver sweeper to remove all nvidia files. restart
4.download the A10 unlocked bios. run the exe files. as soon as that complete the laptop will restart.
5. press F2 when you see Alienhead logo. then go to advance tab.
6. select video configuration and change Primary Display to PEG.
7. go back and select internal graphic device and Disable the IGP and save and reboot.
8. when windows start go to device manager and u should see only one unknown video card.
(if your laptop cannot boot meaning your 680m maybe dead. I had this one before)
9. if everything is O.K. run the nvidia driver setup again. Let the device manager open. You should able to see the unknown video adapter change to 680m.
10. when installation complete restart and there you goes.
11. you can enable back igp if you want too. For me, i just want to use this beast all the time. you can run with battery with 680m and can last upto 1 and half hour or so.
please update once you do all above. -
So in order for the 680M to work in the R3, the A10 BIOS must be installed? Why does the 680M not work on the unlocked A08 BIOS?
-
Any unlocked bios should be the same. As long you can disable the igp.
The A10 unlocked bios with sata 3 support is the latest i guess... -
When I load up the isydeflash program for the unlocked bios it says "warning file size does not match"
got the unlocked bios from page 12 as the link J95 put up wont allow me to download the unlocked bios.
It will not install. Can I install in safe mode?
EDIT: Got it working the whole thing was being a loser.
NOW THOUGH WHEN I RUN THE NVIDIA INSTALLER IT SAYS IT CANNOT FIND COMPATIBLE GRAPHICS HARDWARE.
Oh and device manager does not open.
But the Dispaly driver is called Standard VGA Display Driver and has the same IDS as your old listed IDS NOT like mine.
Like this:
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_04901028&REV_A1
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_04901028 -
Hi gogul1,
is this your device id?
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_04901028&REV_A1
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_04901028 -
It is now it wasn't before. Cant seem to find the modded ini files again.
-
O.K use this inf. replace it from your current nvidia driver.
