each 5870 gpu uses less power than a 4870 gpu, look up their specifications.
how is it more powerful but uses less power? it has much more complexity. -
And is much more efficient, to boot

I don't know about the thorough testing part, but still, good news... if you believe them.

This mad me lol.
Bravo! -

Nice.... , might consider purchase one... -
If some people believe that Dell/Alienware will release a new laptop this summer why wouldn't they wait to put 5870 CF in that one?
-
There's been quite a bit of talk about them moving away from metal chassis.
-
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
I would agree that AW might go a different route , and use a more expensive plastic, as aluminum is a little heavy. I hope that AW gaming laptops " the all powerful " in the future will be lighter.
I think the " all powerful " and less weight is in their to do list for the new revised models. -
We know how thorough they are. So thorough they missed the screen flickering, audio anamolies, dpc latency, M15x throttling, M15x BIOS brick, yada yada yada. I don't know why they don't just release them with what ever issues they have and we at NBR can find a fix for them in 15% of the time it would take the engineers. Then they can browse the forum, and pick up the fix and push it out from there. Seems to be be the normal order of things. Whats changed?
-
DR650SE, I think that 15% is an overestimate.
m11x BIOS update is *still* not here, and m11x was first released what... 3 months ago? People are right, we're gonna see refresh before the new BIOS.

Don't forget to add that " while we could do their testing for the bugs for them, at the same time we buy the laptop at cost. "
-
Also, add to that free educating their on-site techs!
-
That made me laugh, it is very true, they never check them *thoroughly*
-
Well the site homepage has been updated with them now
www.Alienware.com
and dang the Nebula Red with blue lighting is awesome -
Still no x-fire option that I see.
-
I'm still thinking next week there might be some news.
-
Updated with crossfire 5870's? I still only see a single ATI 5870.
Come Monday they might announce something like dual 5870's won't fit in the m17x...something like that. We still might need to wait a bit before we see something other than dual 4870's in an m17x. Maybe the next 17inch (or 18inch) Alienware will have the 5870's in them or something better. -
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
None there. -
People are still wondering about when they're going to be released?
Just have your sombrero's and Mexican flag waving during release day.
-
Cinco de mayo sounds like fun this year.

Which MAY mean that I need to cancel and reorder?
-
If you order through an epp rep they can change any part of the order up until a few days before it ships. My rep said he can change my configuration until about the 16th.
-
Yes contact your representative. I e-mailed mine, and he put mine on hold. Don't have to worry about all the 7-10 business day reimbursement crap tho thanks to him.
-
The rep I last spoke with before the one you suggested said she couldn't put an order on hold. You really shoudlnt need to anyway.

Aristotelhs2060 Notebook Virtuoso
damn. the more you talk about customer support in US the more it looks like a fairytale for Dell EU. Since i ordered i couldnt even add my name on the template...

Dellienware Workstations & Ultrabooks
good news
i just called the tech support and two guys confirmed that dual 5870 should run without any probs
here is the part number for the dual cards with cable
2yvp1
refurbed, 410 bucks
it seems like the only reason why it aint available to config online is beacuse of marketing bs.. i mean if you look at the 4870, it has been delayed for 7 days (it has been the same status for at least a week now....). i think the reason why it is keep delayed is so that they can refresh the whole line so there isnt any left over 4870s
apparently, the dual 5870 wont be out for at least a week. if new config is available, tech support are notified a week or so before, however they dont have any info yet so. go figure
U.S. info -
That's a good one to start
-
refurbed? How the heck are they already refurbs?
-
The first rep I talked to was an overseas rep, the one I was referred to was a N/A rep. We really are spoiled I suppose.
It's the reason I only ever get premium level warranty service, my own personal service tech (should I choose) *and* guaranteed N/A people. I'm sure at some point it will pay for itself. -
Maybe they have already been playing with your laptop Mandrake, so now they are tagged as "refurbed"....
-
When is your EDD Mandrake?
I feel like a schoolgirl waiting for some Crysis benchmarks.. -
May 7th.........
-
So soon!?
And wait how did you get crossfire... -
Dellienware Workstations & Ultrabooks
mandrake -
its prob from the testing that AW did
OR
they could have purchased it from ATI (from cheap price of course) so that when they need to fix the computer, they can use those refurb from ATI
my guess -
Exactly. Thats what Ive been saying from the beggining..
-
So did you order it?
-
Dellienware Workstations & Ultrabooks
nah i didnt order it
i am gonna just wait till the end of summer. my 4870s are supposed to be coming mid of may but i might just cancel it -
Obviously anticipating returns and figured they'd save time and paperwork if they just sold a couple through the outlet from the get go.
-
BTW, the M7820 (aka pro-flashed 5870) is orderable from HP for 381.9$.
-
so nice to hear got my new m17x-r2 in the mail the other day perfect condition. 4870's work like a charm while im in the desert ill be sure to pick up 2 of those 5870's
-
you wouldn't want a graphics card that has drivers optimized for OpenGL as a gaming GPU.

ThaDutchy -
did u order it outside the US? so there is NO WAY to get CF5870 in the US?
thanks -
International regulations prevent you from ordering from outside another country. It's why Dell asks every time you order if you're exporting outside the US (in which case they'll tell you they can't process the order)
You'd have to order it within a country that has the CF option, have someone receive the laptop in that country and *then* have them ship it to you. -
It's possible -- there's an entire thread how to order from another country, by mfractal.
-
Congrats, Delta. Finally!
-
Never flashed a GPU?
-
The only thing that makes professional gpu's themselves these days are maybe a few higher clocks and the device ID that tells the respective ATi (or nvidia) driver which to install and therefor, which optimizations it's going to have. A workstation GPU is not going to be optimized for gaming applications. Any device core/ram clocks that increase will be severely offset by this. To answer your question though, yes, I have.

Is it MXM 3.0b?
