Yeah, I was going to say exactly the same thing. Why do people compare the single 5870 with CF 4870. We all know the CF 5870 is around the corner and well worth the wait.

Lol, you got to the right place to avoid the obvious confusion :)
As was already mentioned by other members, Clevo D900F is the only know-up-to-date system with 980X.
I'll say it again Falcon, XoticPC, PC-Torque, Pro-Star, Ibuypower, Eurocom and a few more dozen others are just resellers, that put their own stickers and re-paint the laptops. BTW, Sager is not a manufacturer as well but just an importer and redistributor of Clevo's in North America.
So, all of the American resellers AFAIK, buy from Sager.

As for the 980x+5870CF: You do realize that creating such a system requires a complete redesign of the desktop X58 not to mention the licensing it for mobile SLI/CF? You will also need a 400W PSU (especially for 480MSLI) instead of the currently offered 240W.

    @SOS4DELL,
Don't recommend getting a messenger bag, you gonna ruin your back with a 6kg laptop on one shoulder. Better get a nice backpack (Orion Backpack is fine).

While it's true that Falcon Northwest doesn't build thier laptops they do build thier desktops and they are sweet.....check my sig...

let me add that when i've called them I get a great guy who speaks and understands perfect english and plays the games you and i do. They are gamers and computer experts. And when i had an issue with my qx6850 based Mach V after 2 years they gutted it and gave me the i7 860 and new Asus p55 board + new video card.

I cant say enough good things about thier service and support.

as far as i know all 5870s on the net are without crossfire input. so i cant find any reason dell would add it to a single gpu.

Mandrake does yours has crossfire input?

I'm currently testing with the standard card that comes with the Clevo systems so no. Doesn't mean they don't exist. I am 100% sure they exist and 99% sure they will be released soon. There's that 1% chance they will have the same fate as the 4870 GDDR5 cards.

Ok, your config is nice but you can do much better. The Samsung SSD is nice but not amazing compared to Vertex 2 or even a Vertex 1.

4 years warranty seems not necessary as most likely in 3 years you will want a laptop. Also, if nothing has broken in 3 years you are most likely not going to need another year of warranty.

The 8gb of ram is useful only if you use intensive apps like photoshop and dreamweaver. If not don't get it. The ram offered by Dell is not amazing but the price is reasonable. I would recommend Hyper X Ram.

Windows Ultimate is really only useful if you have a company network and manage it. No need to give another $150.00 if you are not going to use the features.

Mandrake, I'm really confused at what laptop you've actually received. Did w you get an m17x with a single 5870 and you tried adding a clevo 5870? or did you get a new 17x mlk with xfire 4870 and now trying to put in 2 5870s?

People in panama can order it supposedly. If Dell did pass on the 5870m for the m15x, it's a bad decision. Seems their marketing people are out of touch with consumers.

Consumers aren't stupid anymore. They will see a $1200 g73 at bb with a 5870m and wonder why they should spend more on an m15x that's gimped.

Putting the 5870 in the M15x still puts it below the M17x significantly. Dual 5870's provides a wide chasm of performance difference.

    Dear Joebarchuck, Thanks a lot!
Regarding the Vertex 2 SSD, do you think that I (not a professional) can install them by myself? in Raid 0? So, your advice will be to buy the AW without any hard drive? (in fact I need those principally for my daughter, she's the one that will use those disks as far as I know with AVID editing media and feature films; Dreamweaver, Flash, Photoshop, etc. etc.).

As for the Hyper x Ram, as far as I understand it must be DDR3 (in the web site of kingston they state that: "It is not backwards compatible with DDR2 or DDR based motherboards, due to incompatible module connection, voltage and DRAM technology. DDR3 HyperX is available now in speeds PC3-1375 and PC3-1500" and the motherboard that come with the M17x R? work with the 1333...) To buy the memory outside of Dell I need to know who is the manufacturer of the motherboards since this memories are specific to them. And maybe costly if I need to drop the memory in the machine to change it for others like the renowned KHX DDR3... Kingston say that I cannot mix different brands of such kind of memories.

As a user of Dell computers for years, the extended warranty as proved itself... after years I still use my old computers thanks to that warranty. I travel a lot giving lectures and believe me even when I was 2 hours inside the amazon river in Peru, I get almost next day service... It was really amazing!

The suggestion regarding the win7 Ultimate seems adecuate 4me. I feel that the professional one can be enough but then the difference is not so big.

Thanks for your kind and welcome advice,
    g.

Yup, can see it here. I agree about the 5870. With the thickness of the laptop and the hacks that others have done, it's clear the 5870 is fine.

As long as Dell went with the GDDR5 version it's not that big a deal. The MSI GX640's HD5850 GDDR5 is only 75Mhz less on the shaders. Memory clocks are the same.

To answer your points one by one:

    - The vertex SSD are great and it's extremely easy to install. All you have to do is remove the HDD bay then install the SSD inside. (Simple connections just like changing RAM). You might need to order a second HDD bay (The connector and holder of the hard drive which seems is not always delivered with the PC).

    - RAID is just a setup in the BIOS. Again, no experience required. Remember all files will be deleted once going into RAID config. RAID is actually probably not useful in your case. You might just want to have the two SSD as two separate hard drive. One for Windows and programs and the other for files saved from those programs such as photos, videos, etc... SSD like the Vertex and Vertex 2 without RAID setup have amazing speeds much faster than RAID config of normal laptop 7200RPM HDD.

    - Hyper X Ram is also made for laptop. What you are describing is the desktop version. Here is the link to the laptop version: Hyper X RAM

If you want 8gb you might have to go with this RAM

    - Warranty is up to you. I understand why the 4 years.

    - Windows Home Premium is fine for your daughter. Here are the main advantage of Professional or Ultimate compared to Home Premium and I am pretty sure you will never use:

    • - Connect to company networks easily and more securely with Domain Join.
    • - In addition to full-system Backup and Restore found in all editions, you can back up to a home or business network.
    • - Help protect data on your PC and portable storage devices against loss or theft with BitLocker.
    • - Work in the language of your choice and switch between any of 35 languages.

When configuring a m17x on the Dell site it says call of latest price on a Core i7 system but not on the Core 2 Duo system. What would the purpose be of hiding the price?

If you close the website and start over you most likely won't get that message. It's just a marketing tool they use as they know that people calling have a higher sale conversion ratio than letting them browse on the site.

i think they do not have to do that marketing thing at this point cos 1799 is already been there for several months. I hope something is happening.

If there is a refresh it won't be for a while. They just refreshed the m17x.

Yep, there is no way there is a refresh coming. A refresh won't be before the holidays.
