So theres still hope that if it comes with a single HD5870 it may have the cables so that its easily upgradeable to xfire HD 5870.

I think having a crossfire connector piece on the actual card is more important than the cable. The cable is just a part number you can order from spare parts (not 100% sure)

The crossfire cable is coming with the second gpu, together and not as seperate part. same for heatsink of the second gpu.

Just to further what you just said. I've asked for a replacement CrossFire cable. they don't give them out. The only way you can get one is really to get a replacement secondary GPU. They go together like beans and cornbread.

the CF cable has no part number you could order it with.

Well yeah, what I mean is a place on the actual card for the xfire, doesn't make much sense for dell to carry both a non xfire 5870 and a xfire 5870.

this doesn't surprise me at the least. In my last R1 a single rubber foot detached and when I called up dell for a replacement guess what? You have to buy an entire new case for that single rubber foot. $4,000 laptop and I have to hack up a piece of lowes rubber and stick it on. Utterly ridiculous.

Were you out of warranty? They should've just replace the entire case then :D..

There is no way you are out of warranty. Warranty is minimum 1 year and the PC shipped out early June therefore invoice date would have been late May at the soonest. That would put your warranty to expire this late May at the soonest. That is if you had the very first M17X R1.

I was not out of warranty, Dell was simply unwilling to give me a new case for the single missing foot and as in the cable's case, the were not sold separately. Trust me, I asked 6 separate technical support agents and the decision was all the same: The warranty does not cover items such as the rubber feet. I'll admit I had the basic warranty.. however it was my assumption that something as frivolous as that would be covered. I was wrong.

You can try : Dell Parts
they sell parts for different brand of computers / laptops / notebooks, etc. They can find what you want even if Dell doesn't have them. I have had a very good experience with them with difficult to find parts that Dell wasn't ready to sell...

Dell would be better off with some kind of announcement of an official date rather than 100 4870x2 orders on 5/6 and the 5870x2 release on like 5/15 and then they're stuck with 100 4870x2 returns lol.

i would say EU as they will gain more from overpriced items but US customers have always priority.

Mandrake any news for the 5870? still waiting for info about the bios? thus i didnt understand you bought an R2 with CF 4870 this week and it had this bios on it?

Do you think the 5870s will work in a R1 system ? there is now reason it shouldn't right? i also saw that nvidia is coming out with the 480m in june so might wait for that :p

The only news I have is that the 5870 is not recognized at all in the second slot. At least not in my machine. I've reach out to multiple people within Dell and haven't heard anything back.

You are correct I bought a M17xR2 w/4870s and I'm trying to get 5870s to work in it.

U mean 2 5870s? how can u do that if CLEVO's 5870 do not have crossfire input or output whatever it is. and it is a really weird bios u received, the newer bios suppose to support at least single 5870, isn't it.

I haven't received a write up on what A04 does yet.

Yes I put a 5870 in the second slot and a 4870 in the first. Even without crossfire I should be able to boot to a command prompt and run atiflash -i to get info on both adapters.

It would still need to be tested since the R1 is a completely different system. There is a chance depending on what it takes to get it to work in the R2 that it will work in the R1 but it just won't be supported by Dell (ala M15x w/5870).

it says its going to be replaced so its not a new order. it should have been replaced long before but anyway now they decided this. it was a long process with issues remaining after replaced parts or appearing after a while. i even sent the whole machine for service and they sent it back not working at all. i dont have to say they ruined the box too. lool. i had the R1 since end of July.

Then we leave the question to those people who ordered R2 with single 5870, see what bios they might get in the couple of weeks i guess.
