M17x-R2 - out with HD5870

Mine is ordered and in production (single 5870) I cannot wait to see my new rig!

 

Fortunately I already have an M17x, so I'm not in a big rush. I prefer to wait for another refresh to get the latest, than to impulsively buy now, and missout on a new feature.

 

you'll always be missing out on a new feature with product updates every few months.

 

I'm not counting minor upgrades, I am talking about the big stuff. Once enough accumulates, then I can buy new.

 

One thing to remember amongst all this angst -- 4870CF is still one helluva video system. If that's what you end up with for some period, it won't be the worst thing that ever happened to you.

 

I have 280M SLI right now. The price to jump to the 4870x2 vs the performance bump isn't justifiable to me, not to mention half the reason I want the 5870x2 is for DX11 (I already have a few games installed that support it).

 

That will more than likely be late winter early spring of next year unless you go for a different model.

Weren't there issues with the 280s and Dell was offering the 4870s as a fix?

 

Well, certainly an exception must be made for the poor souls still stuck with 280's in an R-1 who didn't take advantage of the opportunity to swap them out for 4870's. Those folks are entitled to suffer for as long as they wish.

 

I've had both cards and the ATI are much faster on certain games that I played all the time like world of warcraft.

On max settings with shadows I get 30 FPS average in Dalaran and Raids with the Nvidia 280M SLI and it goes up to an average of 65 FPS in Dalaran and Raids with the ATI 4870 CF.

On the other hand, I lost FPS in Farcry 2 and image quality for sure but my main game is WOW so ATI is the best choice for me.

 

If you jumped through a lot of hoops and hassles, some were offered the upgrade, yes. I've dealt with the situation for now, though I've had to lock my GPUs at full clocks to prevent the audio skipping and downclocking problems during games, even with the BIOS updates and drivers that Dell offered as a "solution". Another reason I wanted to upgrade to the ATIs, don't remind me of the pain I've gone through already, I try to forget!

 

Sounds like it's worth jumping through hoops to resolve.

 

Sounds like Dell should owe you a free R-2 as a replacement.

 

I think they will be coming on May 8, no 9th, i had and alien visit me and they said the 20th, but a dell insider in a cave in india said the 25th or was it the 28..there was a bad echo in the cave...

I recall your troubles. It is outrageous that it has taken until now for you to receive a new, fully loaded replacement.

My Order for a m17x w/ a single 5870 states that it comes with a 240 watt power supply. I think everyone just needs to ease up on the speculation and wait for the people who ordered with a single 5870 to get their laptops.

 

You get 240w in case you order with Dual cards OR i7 quad processor.

 

I was just going through the default config and switching between the video cards. That's when I saw it go from 150w to 240w. I didn't even think about the processor, lol.

I'm definitely going with the premium warranty when I do order. I just read that it guarantees you will get North American tech support. Hopefully mexico is not included in that, lol.

 

R2 is called MLK now man. dont know why. but it reminds me of a greek word with 2 As between the letters and one A after K. many of you may know it. hell loool. i hope its only a coincidence

Well if a replacement is in order (system or just cards), and I have it "working" for now (though not as intended), then why not wait for the 5870x2 release before calling Dell about replacement cards? What's the worst that can happen, 4870x2 at that point anyway?

 

Look up the ticker EUO on the NYSE. It's an ETF that shorts the Euro.

Not knowing a correct release date makes it difficult to wait. I don't want to be waiting a couple of months.

I would have already ordered if I had not heard of the 5870s coming. What's been updated since the R1 makes it worth going to the R2 (Intel chipstet, i7 and RGB LED screen). I think they have done all they are going to do with the R1.

The only thing Ill be missing out on is USB3.0 and thats not a huge deal for me. The only thing that I use USB for that would be effected is my backup and that is something I do in the background anyways.

 

Turning into an economic thread now. Dow just bounce but went under 10K. That was a 10% drop in a matter of minutes. Simply amazing, I thought we had a stock market crash happening just a few minutes ago.

welcome to world of economy and bets. everything thats happening is pre-scheduled from the banks of the world EU US Asia wherever. everything thats happens now is an agreement that has been done long before.

and to get back to topic Dell is part of the system. Even reps saying about release dates (customer care etc) are keeping forms of interest and stuff, they give them in an other departments (sales or elsewhere) they give them to managers or whatever, they give them to people above and so on.

in my opinion the fact that the 5870 CF first appeared on EU sites before it went down due to techniqal issues is strongly related to higher prices. Dell never buys parts with higher prices (especially from China) but they sell them higher taking into account the economic situation and equations.

yep, I'm in no big rush for USB 3.0. I do my backups at night when I am sleeping. A CF 5870, OTH, would be justifiable for me to purchase a new system.

Where do others say the power adapter changes from 150 watts. I customized it with a Core i7 processor and dual video cards and it still says 150 watt power adapter.

 

I'm one of the others.. Born in Athens ,and living in NY..

 

It only changes when you pick dual video cards. I was sent the 150 watt for my exchange and I have the i7 720qm cpu but only one video card.

 

You probally do too much backing up if you need something faster than 60mb/second anyway >_>

Why don't you utilize the E-sata port? I did.... with my R1.
I don't see the big deal with USB 3.0.

 

I have zero need for a dual card system. I game but do not require 2 cards.

Mine is setup with a 720QM and 5870 and says 150watt as well. I ordered the 240 spare to take with me and I plan to keep the 150 at work.

That will be the plan one day, but until I fill up my 750GB mobile drive I will continue to use that. I am at a 150-160GB backup now and will soon be close to 500gb when i load my movies on top of data. Basically I take my backup with me and will be uploading it my current dell when it takes on pure server status.
