M17x-R2 - out with HD5870

Replacing m11x... never. I am actually replacing my old desktop (Inspiron 531). It's AMD 4000+ x2 2.1 GHz, with 8600 GT and 4GB RAM. No idea if I can sell it for anything, maybe ill just move it to my university office.

 

Well I just hope that my system will be free of any flickering or any other nasty quirks.

Just waiting on my order of today, M17x totally maxed out...but, delivery June 17. Cold beer will wait until then. Actually 6.

u guys are lucky. took me til 6pm to find a good rep. oh well. i'm hoping to get 20k 3dmarks 06 out of the box. (i hope) it'll probably be more around 19k.

 

You can call them and tell them that you need it asap cause you have to leave town or something like that and they'll upgrade you to nbd for free. I've done that few times in the past and it always works.

 

I'll give it a shot tomorrow.

 

Time for me to find a way to buy a Upgrade kit from Dell. They aren't in Australia yet, So I might have to buy a kit from US if the price is right.

i hope so. 4 months waiting is almost over. last time AU updated single 5870 at mid night.

4 months huh! I have been waiting almost since last May when the Alienware M17x was actually first released!! In december I waited for the Core i7 and now the 5870CF but now no more waiting...!!

Only waiting for it to appear on the Aus site though...
Cant believe gonna own the Alienware for the first ever time....
Also I see most ppl are going for 4GB RAM... U think in Australia getting 8GB RAM upgrade is not worth it

 

If you have to ask, it means you dont need 8GB. Pretty much is that simple. If you needed it, you would know. 4GB is plenty for todays applications and OS's

is the micro stutter issue fixed in M17x R2?

 

12 months? u r the man! i think 4G RAM is fine, if u want more, upgrade by yourself which will be cheaper than grab from DELL i believe.
Let's wait for the option be available in AU. PLUS, can u get a better offer from ur rep. i am currently looking for a good rep who can offer some discount or kind of.

Well I have talked to 3 different reps today and they do not know/see the 5870CF option yet. But I remember a few days back i was negotiating with a rep for a system with single 5870 and he was not able to give me any discount instead he was saying he can add the Alienware headset or the keyboard or the mice in the order for free!

Well surely the 5870CF has gotto appear for Aus anytime now....since its already available on the pages of most major countries...

for those interested UK Dell doesnt sell gpus as parts so no CF 5870. so if you want to buy a hdd buy it from dell not ebay. lool.

thus i spent one hour on the phone to tell me they cant change or delete my order. Useless people.

 

so really no option in sight to buy mobility 5870s with CF connector. we paid thousands for an upgradable laptop and they dont offer upgrades. wholy crap!

 

Mate you most probably had a muppet on the phone .I have bought a gpu in the past for my XPS 1710 but did not get it from sales i purchased through Tech support & they had no problem ordering & selling me the graphic card .

 

muppet or not i talked to guy via chat. he was on dell parts sales. Nothing more simple than that. he told me he checked his tools and they dont sell gpus. Or you guys are clever or i am stupid

you can try and ask now if you wish and tell us results.

 

You have to call technical support for these upgrades. They sell them to you, not Dell parts.

 

At the phone ask for part RV546 and you'll see he can sell you the upgrade of CF 5870......

 

Every country has his own Part numbers, just ask for CF HD5870.
Tech support should be able to find the Part numbers, mine found the right 4870 (with CF cable/heatsink) just by name.

 

this is part number for US only if i am not wrong. I contacted techniqal support here in GR. still waiting for a phone if they can do it. i ll have to call them tomorrow again.

I wonder if it's easy to buy 2 5870 from dell and upgrade my alienware myself....

 

I'm gonna wait for whatever comes out after the 5870's to upgrade. The XF4870's play everything I have brilliantly.
