Same in NZ, 5870 CF is cheaper than 4870 CF.
To upgrade from a single 5870...
- to 4870 CF is USD 275 (Dell US) or NZD 373.50 (Dell NZ, about USD 252)
- to 5870 CF is USD 375 (Dell US) or NZD 311.63 (Dell NZ, about USD 210)
I'm not sure why the prices are so different. I've noticed that there are a few differences between the US base system and the NZ one. We get the RGB screen, 4GB DR3-1333 and 2x 320GB hard drives by default, whereas these are upgrades in the US.
Another interesting price comparison:
M17x-R2, i720QM, 4GB DDR3-1333, 5870CF, 2x320GB HDD, Blu-ray reader, Targus backpack, 3 years warranty.
- Price from Dell US (no discounts or EPP) is USD 3213 (about NZD 4770).
- Price from Dell NZ (no discounts or EPP) is NZ 4337.
-
lol don't forget the 9-cell battery as well as the 240Watt power adaptor are also default here in aus and NZ

cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Well there is only one battery version, and the adapter is automatic if 2 cards or an extreme cpu are ordered
-
I ordered my cf 5870 on the 18th and i called 1 minute ago and it said it was shipped today with and expected date of 26 May, sounds fishy to me. Ill believe it when i see it. Im curious as to what others are hearing about ship dates when calling or talking to a rep. FYI, i originally had and EDD of 18 June.
-
That would be nice though
. I ordered mine on the 21st with an EDD of June 17th, would love it to come sooner!
-
Just got my EDD of 5/26 when I ordered on 05/17. If it is true, really cool.
-
My m17x 5870x2 is gonna be here 5/25! today! yay! I got free overnight shipping. Ordered on 5/17 but changed it on 5/18 and got free overnight shipping! Anyone have it yet, or am I going to be the first here?
-
I got an e-mail confirmation of 5/24 ship date overnight shipping
-
can you post your temps with gpu z when you'll have it ?
-
You and I are in the same boat!
Mine will be here within two hours!
I am soo stoked. I feel like a kid on Christmas!
-
i can imaging mate! looking forward to hearing temps of CF 5870's! my r2 replacements been in producation since 20th i think! and just to make me more excited the new wacom cintiq 21ux is back in stock, after a first month release, so im debaiting about not ordering that till my r2 is in shipping or get it now and test it on r1... oo decissions!
-

Hey guys, finally getting an Alienware m17x replacement for the godawful Studio XPS 16 that should be taken off the market. Got the specs today and it stated:
1 320-8988 ATI RADEON, 5870,XT,DUAL,MLK, ANWNB $350.00
Does that mean they are shipping my replacement with Crossfire 5870s? Ran a Google search for that part number which seems to verify my suspicions. Pretty incredible since my XPS 16 comes with a measly 4670. Looks like I'll be part of the Alienware club soon and finally be rid of the horrible horrible XPS 16. -
i very much doubt ull get cross fire 5870 m8 lol, its equal to spec on ur old machine, if that has one card, ull probs get 1 card.
-
Yeah, that's what I thought as well. I'd be happy with just 1 5870 as that's already better. What is the part number for one 5870, anyone know?
-
can always ask them to pay the difference for CF 5870's might aswell!
-
Yeah, I was originally going to do that but I noticed they downgraded my BD-rom to DVD-RW and 4GB 1333mhz ram to 4GB 1066mhz so I figure they gave me CF 5870s to compensate.
-
Nice to see the Australian Dell site finally get the 5870 CF option
.
I got my M17x-R2 on the 14th of May, what can you do in my situation about upgrading to the 5870's through Dell at this point? (If that's an option at all). I am always happy to wait to upgrade
I would have waited to get these in the first place but I had originally ordered in late March/early April and it has been a real hassle since then >_>.

Lets get some vantage runs going! -
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
Exactly when did you order yours and what state do you live it? -
I just ordered mine today.
-
Ordered it on 5/17, but changed the order the next day. Got free Overnight shipping, and I live in California. Setting up windows and stuff atm
-
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
Thanks. Remember many of us want to see a vantage run as soon as you can...
-
benchmarks already
-
I predict 13.5K GPU.
-
That's about right. I'm more interested in seeing what they hit with an OC of 800+ on each card. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
800 is a little low don't you think?
These will do 16k GPU at least when overclocked (maybe more!)
But now specs are official for the GTX 480m and it does not look bad at all - except for the heat and power draw of course lol -
I'm a noob when it comes to benchmarks and stuff. So you guys will have to guide me. How do I tell if I have my 5870x2 ? It says Crossfire is enabled but for settings it says adapter ATI Mobility HD 5870.
-
Tell me what to download to test the temperature and stuff. I don't have those hardcore games so I won't be able to test it for those
-
I'm still reserving judgment of the 480M until I see benchmarks. Based on what I'm hearing, it doesn't sound too good right now (as far as price and power go). High price ($625 more than a 5870m), hot, high power consumption and low core clock. Even though it's based on the GTX 465, the clocks are still lower. It should be faster than a single 5870m for sure but SLI will require a redesigned M17x. I don't see that happening just for nVidia.
It's about 30% slower than a GTX 465. So you can extrapolate the results from the benchmarks found here: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/geforce-gtx-465_5.html
I'd guess a vantage score of about ~3800 using the 1200p extreme setting. Not bad at all, I'd say it should be about 20-30% slower than Crossfire 5870m in games. IF it can OC well and hit GTX 465 speeds, it will reach stock 5870m crossfire territory which is pretty impressive for a single card if it can actually OC that well without overloading the laptop's cooling. -
Do we know the GPU score of the 5870 CF yet? I mean tested on an M17X R2?
-
Try HWinfo32 or HWMonitor for temps.
Run Furmark for 5 min to see how hot the cards can get. -
Internal lab tests at dell put it at 13.5k GPU according to someone I know. -
That's pretty good.
-
Which mode do u want me to run in for Furmark. Benchmarking, stability Test, log GPU temperature?
-
Stability test! Be careful, though, if you see 95C+ -> quit!
-
Forget furmark, get 3dmark vantage and run that instead! They have a free one time run license key on their website I believe. -
Vantage for Joker, Furmark for me , please...
-
Okay Joker, you're going to have to help me if needed. Btw, how do I tell if i have 5870x2? under resolution and stuff it says adapter ATI mobility HD 5870 or something
-
How do i tell the temp for furmark then?
-
I'm downloading Vantage now will be done shortly.
-
holy hell i'm excited for you guys!
-
wow waiting to see ur results
-
-
We are waiting for those results impatiently.
I noticed that the texture fill rate and the pixel fill rate is at stock faster than the ones from the best OCed test on the thread R2 Benchmark.
