I have a 120hz panel and so far the 1060 runs great. I have been trying to get my hands on a vbios editor so that i can unlock voltage and remove gpuboost but no luck so far. I got a 14k graphics score from the 1060 in 3dmark11 on stock but in game its about the same as an oced 980m. Sorry i know this is a bit offtopic but i plan on moving to a 1070 soon. Woodzstack is the person to go to for you mxm needs.

Could you please share your VBIOS?

I want to flash my ZOTAC MXM 1070 Card and see if it works over the internal display!

The MSI and ZOTAC cards are completely different, flashing vBios of one over the other will most likely brick the card. I would recommend that you backup your current vBios and ask @Prema if he is willing to modify it for you for a proper compensation.

    Much safer option.

Yes, 1070N from MSI (pulled from a F5 for testing). Was on a 180W PSU too... I'm sure a 330W would have given maybe 5% extra in the score.

    will not work.
So, no need to try, already done. unless your saying there is a 60hz eDP display option for the AW17....

Anyways this should work in M17X-R4 and AW17 if you can get the 120Hz displays.

MAN I WANT A M17X-R4 NOW... favorite laptop ever.

there is no 60Hz eDP screen by default, and I doubt you will find one that has the right connectors on it/cable with it. BUT - you could find the right panel, and buy the cable.. but you might as well just get the 120hz panel, or I could do it for you.
I have a single extra eDP cable. The screen is easier then the cable to get.

What's wrong with DELL India. Anyway with the number of Indian students we have here in Germany, I would say you know a handful of people that are in the EU or US. So, you can ask someone to buy it for you and bring it home when they are back on vacation.

Just to be sure: a MSI 1070N will be p&p in an AW17r1 and M17X R4? No hardmodding, no dremeling? Is the GPU heatsink good enough for it?

LOL, this was not simply plug and play. The chassis was modified and so was the MXM connector so the card would fit in nicely. The rest was as simple as having a 120Hz monitor and windows installed a driver for me automatically which worked fine.

Should fit ok. I believe the difference in part number is due to the card manufacturer, whether it is AMD or nvidia. Both should work as the only difference is the orientation of the black tape on the copper contact area, which seems to be removed on that heatsink anyway.

    So no worries.

I highly recommend you use this 5 pipe heatsink for the 1070N, because the 3 pipe is only rated for 100w dissipation and the 1070N will output more.

i checked it but i doubt i will buy gtx 1070 now as i only have a 60hz display...upgrading the display is a hassle from india...so gonna fit gtx 980m....anyways oc it can match gtx 1060 and able to play current games in FHD...later onwards i will build ryzen beast with vega graphics desktop when the need arises

Still good idea to buy the 5 pipe though, the GTX980M OC will output more than 100w.

No, the hard mod is needed this thread says it all, so the MSI 1070N is not PnP needs mods from both chassis and HS, The only PnP is Quadro P5000, while the 1070 Zotac needs only mods on HS, due to the alternating power chokes and PCB design - Need 120Hz on Haswell AW17, I guess only Woodz ran it on AW17+60Hz LVDS and It had some issues, Apart from that all the Pascal mods on Alienwares on NBR were done on 120Hz Haswell machines, While the Quadro pulled it off on M17x R4, off Optimus + 60Hz due to the Ivy Bridge PCH.

1060 will still require heatsink mods and 120hz display. if they have the lvds (60hz) display and dont wish to mod the heatsink then 980m is that fastest option available.

it does and worked without much of any issue. Heatsink will need to be fitted, like any of the pascal cards.

Keep in mind yes, eDP display needed for Pascal here on in...

    @woodzstack
What if my Alien is running in optimus mode? Would any of the Pascal based MXM modules work in an optimus setup, therefore bypassing the need for a 120HZ display? Since in an optimus setup all frames rendered by the dedicated card have to be passed through to the integrated card on the CPU, and in this case only the integrated card is directly outputting to the display, I'm thinking this could compensate for the fact that Pascal based cards do not support LVDS and only eDP display outputs.

If the card absolutely has to be used as the primary display card, then I'm lucky that the AW Ranger has both an LVDS and an eDP output, but I'd really like to avoid spending more money than I have to on this upgrade. Plus, I'd really like to keep my 5hr and 30min (+/- 17 minutes depending on cpu load during web browsing) battery life if at all possible.

You know - INTEL HD has the ability to do this, it seems, but at the same time, when I tested it, the last version refused to install on Alienware's. Like the November patch which added Pascal support. I have not been able to test it since, because my last Alienware rig is sold :S

Alright guys. Im back from the dead. I just finally got my 1070 reinstalled back into my AW17. My first card had to go for warranty as I believe heat killed the power circuit (VRM) portion of the board. My GPU temps were very reasonable, but I was having some strange happenings when I was gaming or benchmarking for longer periods of time. One day while gaming I got a strange screen with blocky artifacts and that was it... no more gpu.
So that's why I fell off the earth for a month or two.
The reason I am back is show off my new custom heatsink. I added the photos to my onedrive link so you can all see the planning that went into adding a heatpipe for the VRM section of the gpu. I also added more aluminum fins from another broken 100W heatsink I had lying around. I stole the extra heatpipe from an M18x R2 gpu heatsink. I heated it with a butane torch until it separated from the heatsink and used arctic silver thermal adhesive to attach the heatpipe to my heatsink and to the new row of fins for cooling the VRM's. I am hoping to give the card a longer testing run this weekend so I will keep you all updated here.

Here again is my onedrive link:

@loafer987 Your sig says 2133MHz does the AW17 support that ? Did you use Thaipoon burner for that ? If yes please share the brand which one was able to run that high clock, Thanks.

I was looking at GSkill Ripjaws 2133MHz 16GB kit to run it on 1866MHz good CL timings aswell. Since I read that AW17 doesn't run clocks that high.. Although I think no one tried, Mr Fox did that on AW18 but with some XTU+Thaipoon burner tweaking I guess..

I literally threw it in and it booted at 2133. Gskill rip jaws 4x8gb kit. Only the extreme edition processors will run those speeds though. Any standard i7 cpu is not capable.

    Hello,

Well done, this is huge, congrats for sharing your nice work! Old gen AW is kicking brand new BGA, I like that :)

I have one thing to ask you Loafer, if you don't mind giving a few details on your mod. This is about the copper stripe that you added to cool the mosfets:

How did you stick it to the heatsink? It's not soldered, so what product did you use? Thermal adhesive, is it same as thermal paste? Is it strong enough, and as efficient as thermal paste? How much did you use? I'm interested about modding a heatsink so any advice is welcome.

Hello, OK thanks for the link. From what I read so far, it seems solder has much better thermal conductivity than thermal adhesives, see here for example: http://electroiq.com/blog/2000/10/lead-free-solders-vs-conductive-adhesives/ but the good thing is it can be more convenient to work with. So for better efficiency of cooling VRM inductors or any other component, anyone building a modded heatsink should consider using solder I think, since better thermal efficiency also means longer lifespan of this expensive MXM pascal GPU.

Anyway, this is indeed a great job

Easier said than done. Using solder is nightmare, unless you put the whole thing in an oven and everything is arranged so it wont fell apart. AS Premium Adhesive is still the best thing for stuff like that. Then there's MesoGlue, but I'm losing hope that it would hit the shelves.

Just to let you know, got the 2133MHz kit 2x8 sticks and surprisingly the RAM boots and runs at 2133MHz without any hassle.
