with 300~400 higher than a gtx570 in 3dmarks11, 7970m is still 3~5fps slower than it. I prefer unigine heaven better![]()

The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Slick, your finest hour. Very interesting and astute analysis. Much +Rep. Now to consider what it means in practical application and whether I care. I need one of these two cards, but part of me resists sucking hind bit to a 5870M in one performance area. Could have interesting ramifications. -
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
Thanks Rev! if you're not doing any pro apps like maya, 3d studio max, massive, adobe suite etc.. you probably don't care.
The 680m is a pure gaming card with all the fat trimmed. -
Looks to be correct. The only app that is close to pro I use is Lightroom and that is just to catalogue without any bells and whistles so I shouldn't suffer too much.
I do like to bench though
maybe I'll stick to Vantage and Unigine
-
Does this mean 675m is better than kepler cards by a long margin for non gaming purposes? like cuda etc
-

regarding this "with kepler -geforce is for gaming -quadro is for work"-thing...
did nvidia manage to cut out/deactivate certain parts of their kepler-gpu´s or is this just driver/bios-related?
somehow i can´t imagine nvidia would build two different (kepler)gpu-series...this is one hell of a cost/efficiency-nightmare. -
Yeah maybe the better compute shaders can be activated through a vbios hack...? Doubtful. Plus even if it happened, would anyone want to try?
-
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
I'm sure someone would. You just know there is someone out there with a piece of wire and a soldering iron that will find it if it is on the die
-
Soldering the die? Yeah good luck with that

Too literal, I meant if they crab it in the same way some other chips are by just not connecting 'stuff'. -
The first review of with Alienware M17x R4 with GTX 680M is out
http://forum.notebookreview.com/gaming-software-graphics-cards/672130-first-review-alienware-m17x-gtx-680m.html -
Wow 6,282 in 3DMark 11. Looks promising!
-
Just release it so you can take my money!!!!!!!
-
LOL dude you already have the 7970M.
-
I returned that machine. Had tons of issues with it.
-
I see. Another victim of AMDs famous drivers/issues?
Green is the right colour. Come join the dark side
-
My M17x r4 with stock processor and 7970m scores 5700 in 3dmark 11,this one gets 5952 with 3820m,would this mean there isn't much difference between 680m and 7970m for gaming?
-
bad luck for you,I dont have a single issue with this machine,i.e until now
-
I really hope the 680 is at most $100 more per card. If so I'll prolly splurge on my M18x. More than that though, and the 7970m cfx becomes hard to pass up.
-
edit : 680M is available now
-
Seeing as they are currently going for $295 more than the 7970M in Sager/Clevo machines, I don't see that being very likely. Flagship nVIDIA cards have typically gone for a lot more than their comparative AMD rivals and still sold well, so I don't really see why nVIDIA would change their plan this time. Here's to hoping, though!

They are up on Dell US website....$350 more than the 7970m on the 17x for a single....$550 more on the 18x for sli vs x/f 7970m's. I thought they would be ALOT more expensive...
EDIT: unless you click through the promotions link, they are $1100: http://www.alienware.com/Landings/promotions.aspx -
I checked Eurocom
Eurocom charge $250 more for GTX 680M than 7970M.
If you buy a Clevo with 2x680M, it will cost $422 more than 2x7970M (or $211 per 680M)
Alienware charge $350 more for GTX 680M than 7970M.
If you buy a M18x with 2x680M, it will cost $550 more than 2x7970M (or $275 per 680M)
So to summarize, Alienware is most expensive -
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
I'm just waiting for the hilarious laugh when Dell UK prices appear - they will be ridiculously high - probably around the equivalent of $1800 over base for sli 680m's
-
Poor europeans LOL
-
i just talk with a nerd(myth-clevo)-the upgrade kit 680m will cost 800$+shipping.holys..t
-
Any idea when the UK site will try and rip us off ;(?
-
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
Any day now we will be in for a right royal raping.... -
Really is bad lets hope your rep can save me some cash lol if not a gtx675 it has to be ;(
-
I had a very good lough stevie
thanks..
-
Yeah, not that bad...With 3d monitor config on the m17x, it comes to 2800+ before taxes, that's with bluray and upgraded wireless card.
Tough decisions to make...I wish they would make a damn matte screen, and this would be easy...Man. -
With 3D screen you won`t get Optimus so that is perhaps something to consider
-
Ehh, yeah but does that really make that much of a difference?
-
I never game on battery with my M17x R2, so not really factoring that in...The body styles on the Sager's are so friggin ugly IMO, that's holding me back from getting the Origin...Although their lid looks sweet...I just get really bad glare in my office off the R2, and that's holding me back from pulling the trigger...Ohh and the 3k price tag is holding me back a bit too ; )
-
For me personally it does since Optimus shuts down the 680M while surfing the web and such, thus making the notebook cooler and quieter
-
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
I'm happy not to have any optimus problems. My 675 drops back to 50Mhz @ 52C in windows (and no fan noise at all) so I don't see the iGpu doing that much better? -
I have never used an Alienware before, so I don`t know how they behave without Optimus. But with Optimus, the 675M is shut down effectively eliminating its heat. I know Nvidia`s power gating have come a long way and able to downclock the GPU pretty far down (50MHz) but its still creating heat.
The IGP will be far more cooler since your 675M have 384 cores @ 50MHz while the IGP have only 16 cores. Should put things in a little perspective
But yeah, the M17x R4 is still silent when surfing/office work? Thats pretty impressive. It shouldn`t be any problem to buy a 3D screen then
-
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
LOL, I have 'assumed a position' strides dropped
-
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
It is silent, even if I set it to 'maximum performance' in the driver so it stays at full clock it never goes above 57c and the lowest, just audible fan speed. Of course the minute something hits those cores (like a video) all bets are off and 63C with a medium-noisy fan is more normal.
I've seen in another thread about the 7970 and it's switching technology causing problems and people seeing higher temps when on the iGpu (immature driver issues currently the thinking) so it seems flaky at best whatever your dGpu solution.
-
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
Bend over fella's - I reckon we are in for a bumpy ride - I'm getting the vaseline out as we speak LOL...I'm guessing here at £1,100gbp over base gpu, if Dell UK keep the 660m as base (or the equivalent of $1700usd) for 680m sli in an M18x - give or take a few quid....
Hope I'm wrong.... -
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Me too! At that sort of price i'm gonna 'clench' -
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
Lmao! - that's funny!
+rep!
I think a "realistic" price (said with tongue-in-cheek) for the UK for 680m sli would be around £850gbp over base - that would be the equivalent of the US price of $1100usd + 20% UK duty. Apart from the UK customs fees, I don't see any reason why the same cards should be any more expensive than that....unless it is just sheer profiteering. -
Well I always go with the reasoning of UK prices are the same numbers as the US just with a different symbol.
Apart from starting price, I expect the 680m to be around £300-ish above the 7970m. Time will tell. I'll be on the phone with Dell as soon as it is out as Dell have already offered to replace my system. -
Widezu, in US it is out, now you can configure 680m on the web, I am sure you will get your chance soon enough
let us know how does the beast fare!
-
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
Well I wouldn't put profiteering beyond Dell but that sounds right. Luckily I am a US resident (a legal alien so my card says!) so I have options
-
I was wondering how do you get your system replace whenever a newer one come out? I see alot of member on here get their system replace whenever a newer tech is out. I really want dell to replace my m18x to m18x r2
too.
-
MickyD1234 Notebook Prophet
That's a fact. I've been purchasing IT kit in the US for the last 8 years for a UK company and no matter what the exchange rate just the currency symbol changes
-
And that is one of the few problems I have with NBR...
