I believe he's had issues with his system for a while. Not sure what, but I remember him stating he was sitting on the replacement until the 680M gets released.
-
-
Now it's only a matter of time until the 7990m comes out.
-
I've had my GPU replaced over 3 times due to the heavy workout I give it
And Dell's policy is three repairs of the same component warrants a replacement.

Yeah, same sit for me - 3 engineer visits so on the 4th HW prob (not all the same) I asked for a replacement and was told by the tech that I qualified. I had limped it along until the R4 came out hoping that I would get one and did!
I was happy to get a better CPU and bigger HD as part of the replacement (along with a fresh start of the warranty) but I'm curious; are they going to charge you the difference or are you getting some 'goodwill'? -
quoting myself here but hey, i found this:
NVIDIA GK110: The True 7-Billion Transistor Kepler GPU - 3D Tech News and Pixel Hacking - Geeks3D.com
basically it says, the actual "real kepler" aka GK110 is yet to come.
right know with the GTX680/680M we only got the midrange-kepler...interesting read -
That would mean the 7990M and 685M indeed is around the corner
-
Look at the yield struggles Nvidia's had with 294mm2 GK104, and ask me to believe that 550mm2 GK110 will come out this year and also have a mobile variant.

First review of Alienware M17x R 4 with GTX 680M is on notebookcheck.com online.

Quagmire LXIX Have Laptop, Will Travel!
Ouch! Not even looking at the huge difference in CAD program benching (compute) and just focusing on the game benchies...Ouch!
Even with the design focused on gaming, I can't even say those figures are a 'trading blows' scenario. However, I don't completely understand the charts and my German is rusty, like bottom of the sea for centuries rusty
. There is a big diff in the Clevo 7970m and AW 7970m most times, and if this was an AW 680m vs AW 7970m, I could guess it would be more of the trading blows expected and possibly the edge to 680m.
More info needed! Thanks 4 the link. -
Oh wow... 7970m beat the 680m in most high demanding games... Bf3 crysis 2 metro 2033 all went to 7970m ....
-
i think the next drivers relese will increase performance of the 680m
-
Same can be said about 7970m
-
thought UK was supposed to get them today ?
-
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
I thought so too - spoke to my rep earlier and he said that they will be next month for some reason.....
-
that really sucks uk last and charged most , sounds about right
-

Dell are probably calculating how much urine they can extract from us.....
-
i need to order this soon , but no way i am getting a 675 card and i need 3d ,,,,, did he give a date for next month ?
-
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
I imagine at the start , so maybe a week from now.....
-
i can wait that long
-
Guys unless you are getting the 120hz screen there really seems to not be a benefit in getting the 680m so far other than numbers chasing, even if money is not an issue to you... Many games are performing better on the 7970m... Give it a wait, maybe someone here will be able to give us some solid tests and prove the 680 is a better card but so far from nbcheck its not showing any benefits other than in a few games and in the games that it does perform better in the difference is imposible to notice when its 67fps vs 100fps.
-
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
+1 .... no reason to get all worked up till someone receives a system with the 680m and we can see some real unbiased numbers.
-
7970m gets higher max FPS but ALSO gets lowest FPS because its unstable in some games.
-
The card is available today. Waiting for reviews
-
Ya know, looking at the Clevo prices, I wouldn't fault a person for taking the GTX 680M. I mean, the default NP9170 w/ 680M is only $1885.68 shipped, with the 3% discount.
That's not bad. -
Honestly that is not even close to a good deal considering an m17xr4 with a killer N card 8gb ram and 750gb HDD and 7970m is 1849 right now. That PLUS if you are a student you get a free Xbox 360 or a 200$ dell gift card.
So for 50 dollars less you get better specs, a better more feature packed laptop with a free gift if you are a student.
Today, its hard to chose a clevo over the 'ware -
Where? 1080, 6gb, 500gb and the 7970m = $1950 after tax (using $50 off coupon)
-
The Dell Online Store: Build Your System
you're welcome
If you are ordering be sure to tell the rep you are a student to give you the free xbox 360 or a 200$ gift card. If you dont want ether of that ask for 100$ off of the system - if they dont give it to you, after you recieve the order call cancellation department and tell them you never got the xbox - they will offer a 100$ credit...
So 1749$
or 1699$ with the 50$ off coupon
i7 3610qm
750GB HDD
8GB 1600mhz DDR3 Ram
7970m GPU
Killer N wifi card
1920x1080 screen.
or better yet, get the xbox, sell the xbox for 200$ now you spent 1599$ for a supped up R4 after the xbox sale and 50$ off coupon.... this is not counting any discounts you fight for with reps... -
Still $1950 after coupon and tax. Thanks though!
-
Well of course there is us tax - the price im showing you is dell price with a much better config than you said. but were not counting a discount that reps usually give or a free 360, So yeah, a much better deal than a clevo.
-
I respect your opinion but i have no interest in Alienware...been there done that.
No tax for me on Clevo, plus i get a 128gb ssd and a thermal upgrade and the 1102 killer (i can't utilize the 1103) For less than $1800.
We agree on one thing that is for sure. Taking a pass on the 680m. Enjoy your machine! -
Also alienware 7970m owners are not experiencing any unstable performance like clevo owners who are stuck with enduro and have to wait mostly likely a year to get it running right on games.
-
Can someone confirm that this works before I go ahead and get one? Also, if it does work, how do I order one?
My system configuration is an M17x R3, GTX 580M, 2630QM, 1920 x 1080, Kingston HyperX SSD 240GB.
I know that the M17x R3 has a PCIe 2.0 slot and the M17x R4 has a PCIe 3.0 slot. I was wondering if the 680M in the 2.0 slot would lower the performance of the 680M? I want to upgrade my GPU because when I play Skyrim at max settings, I'm only getting about 45 FPS when I'm aiming for 60 FPS minimum. Thanks.
I have a 2630QM, is it worth it to upgrade to a 2860QM to increase performance when playing games like Skyrim? -
personally, i would wait for the first user-reviews.
you might need a new bios who recognizes the 680M + make the 3D work (if you want that).
beyond this, i wouldn´t be surprised if the 680M comes with a new heatsink-design. -
I'm on 2D at the moment. My current GPU is the GTX 580M.
-
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
Haven't seen anybody try it yet. The 680m should be plug and play, but until someone actually tries it, you cant be 100% sure its gonna work properly.

Hi. just want to ask im currently having a ATI HD6900M Series on same m17x r3 will that be applicable for me to upgrade to 580m gtx nvidia ? thanks ^^
-
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
yes you should be able to. No reason why it shouldn't work. There might be minor differences that may need to be looked at such as heat-sink compatibility and such though.
-
If the question is more along the lines of "Is it worth it to upgrade to the 580M?" then no it's really really not. The 580M is considerably overpriced for the performance over the 6990M.
-
I thought the 580m dropped its price a while back and ended up not really costing much more than a 6990m? They were the same price when I configured my system back in Feb.
As for needing to upgrade, unless you wanna change screens and go 3D with it, not worth the need to change. Not really an upgrade IMO. I say get a 7970m or if you can afford it, a 680m. Those would be an upgrade. -
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
It did drop in price from £1200 down to around half that, from recollection. Bear in mind though that this was for NEW systems - upgrades are completely different and normally run ALOT more expensive for upgrade parts.....chances are that the 580m is STILL quite costly....if bought from Dell.
And, yeah....unless you are swapping the panel for a 3d one, there really isnt that much performance gain to be had as they are "neck and neck" with most things.....the only other benefit that I could see with the Nvidia's would be PhysX and CUDA. -
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
oops thought it said 680m, not 580m. Guess I need to learn to read.
as to swapping to the 580m, like the other guys have said its really not worth the money.

Finally! Yesssss! M17x R4 on the way with GTX 680m. Only 3610QM CPU though but I'm probably going to put my 2920XM in there seeing as the mobo should be Sandy Bridge capable.
Estimated shipping date is 13/7/2012. Will be doing Vantage, 3DMark 11, Heaven 3.0 plus BF3. Watch this space

Widezu is getting a new R4 with 680M right and so is mrm2x? Is there someone else getting it to test for R3?
Did you cancel you order? -

Great news, Widezu69! Looking forward to your results. Will you have your notebook long enough to see whether the 680M will work in the R3?
