How did you find out? On the website via the Support Status? Or are you calling the Costa Ricans directly? (a la 1800-alienware).

How hot does this thing run when over clocked? My 460 tops at 65 after 30 mins of furmark with oc. Laptop is propped up in back of course.

I run the overvolted vbios. Overclocked to 800/2000 which yields around 17k GPU in Vantage. With the propped back, I get max around 75C after a long session of BF3. Stock clocks, I hardly touch 65C.

Mine has also shipped. Its just the card. Am I going to need to order any brackets or heatsinks for it also or will it come with them? Or do I use me current heatsink on my 6970m?

This is a part replacement for me... my M17x (I got it w/ maxed out specs then put in my own SSD) came with a faulty 580M. So I've basically had a big laptop with no graphics power since I got it a month ago.

No idea about the brackets and such, although when talking with them over the phone it SOUNDED LIKE it does. I could be completely wrong there, so let's see what others have to say about it. ;)

    EDIT:

If no one shines light on the question, I'll reply to this thread again when I get see the part being replaced to let you know if it includes the things like the heatsink.

Tech finally came and installed mine today as well.

One thing I noticed was that the thermal pad on Dell's supplied heat sink contact area is way way smaller than the heat spreader on the graphics card.

I had a new tube of Arctic mx4 and the tech pulled the stock thermal pad and plastic looking surround off (i know its not plastic, but i forgot the material name) and put a nice fat sized spot of thermal paste on it.

I have been running Deus Ex and Witcher 2 on it to test it out, and I will agree that its noticeably faster than the 6970 I had previously, and so far the temps haven't exceeded 64c according to gpu-z.

Okay. I finally made a phone call to 1-800-Alienware for Tech support.

And a rep said GTX 580m is 1185.00 USD. This confirms the price.

I also asked if I needed heat sing and thermal pad in order to upgrade from ATI HD 6970m, and he said he will give those items as well.

If you have enough credit, they also would make you a Preferred Card (Dell Credit Card) for payment option.

    Take care.

    Sean.

    p.s. I'm using m17x-r3 with ATI HD 6970m

Are they going to take your current card away and will a Dell tech install it for you? or are they just shipping you the part only?

I was able to get the 6990m + 1080p screen upgrade with dell tech installation for 422.

It all depends on who you talk to and if he wants to help.

Hi, is the 580m worth the extra money than the 6990m in the upgrade option?
Will it run cooler and overclock more than the 6990m? Is the only downside the throttling fix?

The 580m is a tiny bit faster(1-3%). It does run cooler than 6990m. Is it worth $300 more? That depends on how much money you have but I would say no, and I have used both cards (currently on the 580m).

Well if you are a bencher like me, then yes. It is worth a bit more perhaps not $300 but the performance upgrade when using the overvolted vbios is amazing. This is the only card I has used that feels like a Desktop card. I can overclock to match the clocks and the performance of a 560 Ti.

Ta guys, seems its an extra £100($150) after current discounts to get a 580m over a 6990m. Think i'll go for the 580m if i decide to do a upgrade from last years m15x which i still think is a great laptop.

Can you game with those clocks w/o artifacts? Or that just for benchmarking?

Today is the first day I can test my 580m, I looking forward to seeing howing does.

Let me know how things compare to the 6990m in your opinion. For me the GTX580m seemed like a downgrade compared to the 6990m in my testing. I am actually going back to the 6990m but have to wait till Tuesday to place the order.

I will do a thorough comparison once I have used it more. So far the 580 is tiny bit faster, but the fan keeps cycling on and off, even when net surfing, which is very annoying, and I think I prefer the selectable graphics of the 6990m, so you may be right, the 6990m may be the way to go.

Are you guys able to swap out a 6970M/6990M for a 580M without any other changes, other than drivers. What happens with the Intel IGP?

Uninstall the ATI drivers, run driver sweeper in safe mode, power down, change cards, install the Dell nvidia drivers and that's pretty much it.

The Intel IGP actually gets used much more once you swap to the nvidia card, as optimus automatically switches between cards based on what you are doing.

Exactly as Dbase said. I did a fresh install, but a driver sweep would work too. Install the IGP driver, then do the Nvidia driver, and you are good to go.

I may be interested in trading my 580m for a 6990 + a little cash. PM me if you are interested.

You would not be happy with my 6990M; it won't o/c beyond 800/810. If it could hit the normal 840/850 level like the one in my original R3, I wouldn't be exploring alternatives. Plus, I will need it (or a replacement) for warranty purposes.

@Idlehand -- what is this replacement order business you mentioned?

My 6990m died and Dell was out of stock but offered me a GTX580m as a replacement. I received it but am unhappy with the performance due to the throttling so Dell is replacing the GTX580m and putting me back to my original config with 6990m.

I am feeling the same way, but I am going to try the 580m for at least a week or two. I feel it deserves a fair shot.
