Try running it off the battery instead of the power adapter. I know on my old M7700 and my m17xR2, the power brick would make a noise that corresponded to movement on the screen sometimes. Scrolling a window would trigger it, for example.

Coil noise from the GPU sounds more like a squeal. CPU whine is more of a high pitch whine. Hard to explain. Coil noise is normally the louder of the two

Can't say for others, but in my case, battery or A/C won't change one iota.

And again, in my case, the sound is always there, and does not get worse when scrolling, it's just there, all the time, like an old friend, but I do not appreciate those "friends"...

Noise seems to come more from the left side on my M17X, I've got only one GPU, 260; strangely, this card is sitting on the left of the lappy...

The cards should arrive either today or tomorrow.
I didn't complain about the screen. Probably I'm just being too picky and had a super good experience with laptops before, my friends could barely notice the yellowish hue only after I pointed it out to them. I assume those hues are the price you have to pay for the RGB LED. If I see another M17X and find its screen much better, - will call Dell and get mine replaced. Till then - it's acceptable.

I'm very picky with screens too and there isn't a hint of yellow on mine anywhere. If yours has a yellow hue, its probably defective. Is it a Samsung model? I know Dell has LG and Samsung now.

That is what I have too. I don't notice any kind of defect at all. Everything looks smooth and proper.

As far as the ones with morse-code sounding noises, it doesn't seem normal. I have not heard any kind of noise from mine at all other than the fans running on low. I even put my ear close to the laptop in different areas and hear nothing out of the ordinary. This is my 4th laptop and I've never heard noises like that on any of them.

Weeeeeird. I think I heard a PowerMac back 15 years ago that did this too. And I wonder why my Playstation 3 does it...but just on the store? A web page is super strenuous maybe, but Uncharted 2 isn't? ;)

3D shutter glasses have been around for years. I had an geforce2 GTS card back in '01 that had a jack for shutter glasses. nvidia had a stereo 3d app that worked with the driver to do a page-flipping 3d rendering with openGL and directx games. Surprisingly, it worked pretty well with stuff like unreal and quake3-based games.

Then they just let the driver die. Seems like it wouldn't be all that difficult to resurrect support for the technology.

Wow, I didn't know Nvidia had one even before the current one. I had a Geforce 2 but it didn't have a jack like that I don't think.

Well, at any rate, so-called "3D" is a NEGATIVE for me after having to endure it to see Avatar.

Got the secondary GPU replaced today (the card they brought looked heavily used) it solved the distortions I had with CF enabled, but now I have the famous flickering again....
Will need to reinstall the drivers and/or reflash the BIOS.
    Dellienware lost my vote.

Not to go too far off topic, but Coreline was my first 3D film and it was amazing. More like watching a play than a movie. I can't imagine how 3D gaming would be though. Hopefully they overcome the whole headache inducing problem.

On topic: I can't wait for my new M17x. My current laptop's hinge is pretty much broken so any slight tap on the desk and the screen falls.

No it's the "clouds/grass/trees" type of flickering in Crysis. It was fixed in my R1 by moving from 9.12+modder to 10.3. So I assume that the driver needs to be reinstalled again.

    Aikimox,

On Crysis make sure you have the latest patch, plus the Crytec 'hot fix' installed. Else you will get mondo flashing, flickering of on screen elements.

I'm not really into Crysis, just put the demo in to see if the major problem is gone. Finished downloading King's Bounty TAP and everything is super smooth. So the problem is fixed.

I guess that's the upside to paying way more than our southern neighbors. I
had always assumed that Alienware Canada just imports the laptops from the U.S distribution center, get's charged duties, then they charge us PST/GST. How are they going to explain charging us hundreds more now...

I read that the 940XM was coming out early third quarter of this year. Is it something to wait for or just a small increase in frequency compared to the 920XM?
