Hmm, if the cooling's really that much better...well, darn it Dell, get a 5870! (And doesn't that actually run cooler than the 4870? Similar number of transistors (probably fewer), but smaller process, so...

I wonder if I can get my dell rep to knock off an additional 50$ due to the LED now being cheaper and my system still being in build.

They're ....how to put it... not objective, biased. You can use them for some reference in some cases, but better look around for more info before making up your mind.
I'd say they are 80% accurate (based on 4 years of closely following them)

HI, im new here and had a few questiongs about the R@ i got mine less then a month ago and have been noticing a few probs here and there. First one is waking up from sleep or standby. Any one ever woke up to a black screen with just the mouse pointer? its not that big of deal just annoying cause i just hit enter a bunch a times with my password and it logs in. Second, when connected to a external monitor and playing WoW and a few other games that are a bit graphic intense the lower half of the screen like Jitters and shakes left to right about 1-2 cm quite annoying. Third, Disabling the Adapter warning in the bios cause the beep on start up or wake up is annoying during class left my computer on the fritz twice where it would shut down but 2/3 of the fans would Run Full speed and the computer wouldnt boot. i noticed the second time that the Numlock caps and scroll lock lights were lit and the numlock was blinking rapidly. Does anyone have these problems? should i ask Dell for a new one?

Maybe it's just me but I tried the new Synaptics driver. I had to uninstall the previous one and then restart. It doesn't work with or without the USB mouse plugged in.

Also, there is no more the option to "disable if USB mouse is connected"

Veredict: Failure. At least on my side.

Back the old one and it works fine.

They're working fine for me so far. Dual finger scrolling works although the choppiness of synaptics drivers is still present.

That drive will fit but ONLY in the 2nd hdd bay. You will have to modify the bracket and the chassis to accept it.

Joker, where can i enable the touchpad ?
i've installed the new driver, and i can't seem to find the option of enabling the device while there's an external mouse. i remember choosing the disable option a long time ago, and now i can't find how to enable it.

    Hehe, nice one.
Might call Dell again and get it replaced, I think it's faulty. Even the horizontal angles are terrible, starting from 30 degrees to either side the white becomes pink.

I wish AW had the matte option.

Metro 2033 destroys my framerate at max settings. Anyone else try it yet? High settings is playable and works fine but very high settings is brutal.

I haven't played much so far but it seems pretty good. It reminds me a lot of Fallout 3 from what I've played. The graphics are quite a bit better though.

Edit: Using fraps here's what I saw (and this is just inside the beginning shopping area):

    1. Settings: 1920x1200 very high preset. FPS: 15-30ish..if there was any action, it would probably drop to single digits.
    2. Same as above except high preset. FPS: 30-60 and again if there was any action, I'd expect the fps to dip to the 20s range.

So yeah at stock clocks with a 920xm this game brings the R2 to it's knees. I'll probably try a high GPU OC tomorrow (650ish core) to see if it helps.

    hey guys

Thought I'd stop in and say HI! :)

Man this machine is awesome... no issues at all so far...

One cool thing i learned, kind of unrelated to the M17xR2 but, i ordered it with Windows 7 Home Premium, mainly because I have access to a MSDN account so I have Windows 7 Ultimate already

Thinking I would have to reinstall I tried to do it in place, and windows told me to run "anytime upgrade" - so i did... i entered my product key, 1 reboot later I had Ultimate!

Pretty cool... just waiting to get my 2nd SSD installed - mainly for work

Aikimox...I think maybe your screen is out of calibration or defective. I am not really a gamer but I love this screen. Basically the only reason I bought this and the fact that even with a single 4870 and 540m its better than any other laptop that I was considering for the price. I love it. I wish I like games more but I just dont have time. I spend alot of time and money on other toys lol. I do love this laptop though and have no regrets a all. Iv had no problems either.

I'm not too frustrated with the quality of the screen (can notice the problem only on white background and only if I'm looking for those), but rather the E2E glossy concept.
I wanted to kill all the enemies with a single shot, to get the best gaming and business machine with decent battery life and the outdoors use option. I didn't mind the weight, but was hoping to score all the rest. Looks like I have to start from scratch. Doing some research now. Better later than never, right :p

Someone in the Dell forum removed the E2E cover and underneath is a matte screen. He posted in detail how to do it and it looked pretty good so you may want to consider trying if you feel strongly about it.

This screen is hard to see in very bright enviornments. I use mine only in a dim home office like setting. So I actually love the glass over the panel. It is what makes it pop. I also like plasmas with the glass over the screen. Just my opinion. However I can see how this laptop would be a pain in the A55 in a bright office or in a public setting. I think it meant for media type settings. I had an Asus G51 with the 1080p screen and I loved it also. I havnt been around much latley is there any more info on the 5870 beeing an option in the M17X R2?

blu-ray drive wont' play movies without stuttering and stopping, I have reloaded the drivers, the bios is current, reinstalled the software still doesn't work properly, the drive will read cd's and play regular movies so I am sure it is just a software issue, any ideas on what to do next?

Do you see any stutter when playing movies from the HDD? It might be the blu-ray itself is defective.

Someone posted a fix in a separate thread in this forum, but I can't seem to find it. It was about three weeks ago I think. It has something to due with a dell program involving bluray playback. It can be easily nuked but I can't remember the name or nature of the program.

You can always download some other trial software to see if the problem persists.
