When removing the drivers go to the Device Manager->Display Adapters->right click on the ATI Mobility...->uninstall -> check the box when prompted.

Anyone know the Australian number for the spare parts department? I gotta call them and ask for a 4870 spare part and a CF cable.

And pray it isnt going to be over 900 dollars for the part ;(

I remember those 3,583 bytes very well... One ICON on my desktop now takes up more memory nowadays nevermind the actual application. Or the desktop. Or the mouse needed to click on it. And < 1 sec boot times! Hahaha. Not so good at the graphics though. I too wrote some games for that machine (tinkering mostly, I think I was in grade 7 at the time) and learned initially to program in part by "typing in" entire games from code published in magazines.

Nowadays I'm really cranky if my multi-megabyte BIOS doesn't fully support VT-x and won't settle for looking at anything less than a FullHD display. How things have changed.

You will have to go back a few pages but I posted the fix for the problem you are seeing. I ran into the same thing...turns out I downloaded the desktop 10.3 catalyst suite by accident.

Look a little further down on the AMD site and download the Radeon Mobility 10.3 suite.

The fact that your install shows Lord of the Rings is the dead giveaway, trust me!!

    :)

Good choice. I have been disappointed with all 3 ccfls that I have had in my R1. They are not lit consistently with dark spots in the screen, text in wow is washed out, and max brightness is very dim to me... well unless I am in a pitch black dark room... then its bright.. I have used RGB on other systems and my external Monitor is the Samsung xl2370 RGB LED and I love it.. You will enjoy it as well i am sure..

all depends if you will watch blue rays on the computer.. In my case, I had to have it. I like to be able to watch movies on the go and since most of them are blue rays now I had to have it... Your call though... If you wont be watching many movies on it, then you dont need the upgrade right now.

I ordered mine with the BD reader.

I usually, no, I ALWAYS skip the BD upgrade but this time I didn't.

I think the RGBLED screen + BD will be the perfect setup for watching movies on a laptop ;)

I had almost the exact same issue even after doing a driver cleaning. I gave up even trying (and I used the program linked to in the OP). Even after cleaning out the drivers all I got was the box for Catayst Install Manager.

It can act as a portable bluray player too. It does have 5.1 out which works perfectly for my logitech z5500 speakers although I would have preferred digital out.

The 4870 scales quite well with a powerful processor. Probably more so than the g92 core. As for medicine, if I could go back 10 years I'd have been an engineer or pharmacist instead.

P.s. Ever heard of Bioware? It was started by a group of doctors that were passionate about games. Who knows where our careers can lead us.

If only we knew exactly what we wanted to be at a young age. Too bad it takes time to figure out what you are really passionate about. You said you would've been an engineer. Funny, I am one, but if I could go back I would have probably picked Physics or Mathematics. (At least right now I am pursuing the latter.) Still, who knows where we will end up. Maybe some of us will get together one day and start a computer building company...

And to keep this on topic: maverickguru, go for 620m if unsure; 720QM if you are certain you will benefit from it.

    620 ftw!!

Nah, both procs are so close in power but the 32nm and lower TDP put the 620 ahead of the 720 for me.

Don't regret. The secondary card can add you some headache. Just look in this and other threads for flickering issues.
I like red as well, but it's less neutral and eventually will strain your eyes and make you regret the purchase ;)
