On the topic of plugging and unplugging the power adapter causing crashes, is there anyone else whose system will crash from this under Dell drivers? From everything I've read Dell drivers are supposed to be the ones that work.

My system initially couldn't boot under battery power, it would get to the point of seeing the little orbs about to form the windows logo and shut off. A reinstall of windows fixed that issue, and before I installed any drivers I could plug and unplug the adapter without crashing but with Dell drivers mine crashes.

I was looking at mobile video cards and there rankings today and found that the ATI 4870 has moved up. Is this due to new drivers? It was like 15th down the from the top card. Now it is like number 10. The benchmarks have even changed. Maybe my memory is going. Anyhow this is where I get my info..... http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-4870.13974.0.html

If you've got 2 500GB drives (which it looks like from your sig) then they are Seagates.

R2 has an ST Micro DE351DL Accelerometer on the board that does the freefall detection, though the drives may also have a sensor (I don't feel like opening up my machine to check what the specific model # is). It's listed as "ST Micro Accelerometer" under th system devices section of device manager if you want to disable.

The ATI 4870 outperforms the 280s and the 260s. its actually one of the top 3 cards.

I have just checked it as well. If you look carefully it says GDDR5 memory, which is not what you get in the m17x. I wonder in which laptop they tested it and got those results?! ATI 4870 with 256bit bus might even outperform the new 5870!! Anyway as for me if AW doesnt fix the flickering issues by the middle of this month and release new video cards I am out of the game. Maybe buy myself a trip to Hawai, hehe and buy a ps3 instead.

Honestly if it came to a choice of getting rid of the RGB LED screen or the Crossfire cards due to an incompatibility I'd get rid of the CF. That screen is extremely good, and something that a lot of people hoped would end up in the R2 (and it did). That screen is what you have to look at day in and day out. I'd take 280 sli in a heartbeat if that's what it took to keep that screen.

    :)

If it came to a choice where I had to get rid of any of these two I would say I am not interested, close the phone and think of something else to buy. Alienware should come up with some fix soon. I cannot even believe that they are selling laptops to customers that they already know they possess problems. They should make the configuration that causes problems unavailable until its fixed. Personally I dont really trust any of the reps. I think that the problem is probably a hardware one, maybe the motherboard or it just needs a bigger power supply. But ofcourse thats just my beliefs regarding this issue.

There is no compatibility or hardware issues with the RGB LED! These b.s. rumor mongering posts need to stop. Just because some underpaid CSR tells you guys in Europe this doesn't make it true--it's just b.s. to get you to shut up.

P.S. Comparison shots of the RGB LED vs Dell Studio XPS 16 (AUO 15.6" WLED) coming soon.

It's a bios issue that's been fixed already. I know because I have it. Mystery solved. Others will get the same bios as soon as Dell is ready but at least SOMEONE (me) has the updated bios and can confirm it works fine.

Kampin you are just trolling at this point. There are obviously no issues with RGBLED compatibility since nobody on this forum has ever mentioned actually having any issues. Of course maybe it is some huge conspiracy that M17x r2 owners have going

Mine doesn't freeze when I unplug the AC adapter. I think it's driver specific like scook mentioned. I'm using the 10.3 beta's right now.

    Another question now...
My Wireless connections are really bad.... I have the 6300 wifi-card, but my connection are very unstable... it fluctuates from 20k to 1.1m in a mater of seconds most of the time.... is there a better driver out there for it ?

Yes, just to reiterate: 10.3 drivers solve the system freeze when unplugging.

Edit: Damn you guys are fast... or I am too slow typing.
Edit 2: Lol. Nevermind. I just noticed I was using an old cache of this thread...

I'm not sure the drivers bad. I have been using that wifi in my system and have not had any problems at all. In fact, it works much better than my old 1510 and this is the first laptop I have had that has never disconnected from my wireless network. I use it playing WoW and everything works great for me. I no longer have to go wired playing. :)

Maybe it's a configuration setting or something on your card or network?

    Hi All,

What graphic drivers are everyone using, all my games work but on the Crysis games from the the Crysis logo i get bold lines across the video then they go away and do not return, i was wondering if this could be because they are Steam versions?

Everything else seems to be working, but has anyone notice the the mouse/pointer movement is extremely slow even after options are amended?

I did a search and couldn't find any answers. Has anyone tried playing FSX with the r2? I worry that my 720qm won't be able to push good fps.

The reason I wonder is that since FSX is very cpu-bound, the 720qm will not have the horsepower to push good fps. The coding for the game is like a frankenstein update of FS9 and there was little optimization done. I hear the service packs helped with multi-core performance, but performance was much better in dual core vs quad core.

My old dell e1405 ran FS9 in medium-high settings with smooth fps and I attribute most of that performance to the T2500 cpu, not the integrated Intel GMA 950.

If you're looking at dual use for work and play, maybe install virtualbox and run XP in a VM? If you don't need to game in xp that could work.

64-bit XP was one of the worst pieces of trash OS ever. Although, the title for THE worst still belongs to Windows ME ;)

I couldn't get any driver's for half my stuff to work. Terrible.

I would say just use a VM for XP if you just need app functionality.
