It is an easy install. All you have to do is:
Remove battery. Remove back cover. Remove 2 screws on back edge of laptop. Pop off the touch panel. Remove keyboard. Install GPU. Place crossfire cable and plug it into the primary card (will already be attached to the secondary GPU). Put it all back together.

New AMD Catalyst Application Profile Update
-
Link added to the first page. I can confirm that with the 10.5b drivers + the latest profiles that the wavy lines in Battlefield BC2 are gone. Smooth as butter gameplay. I played for hours today. -
-
I can install them for you over a remote session if you need. PM me and we'll set something up;. -

I am pretty sure that driver sweeper caused my 10.3 install woes

Hey anyone with problems running Street Fighter 4?
The FPS here drop to 30ies right at the third fight, always at the third fight....
First two fights run flawless with solid 60fps everything maxed and crossfire on.
Third fight seems to disable the second gpu, anyone with that? -
-
-
soo... wonder if anybody had seen it before..
I swapped one of my 500gb drives with my 160 gb SSD.
Changed the settings in bios from RAID to AHCI, installed windows on the SSD, all went well until i installed Intel Matrix Storage Manager.
Once it was installed the hdd (now secondary drive) of 500 GB dissapeared and instead in device manager the old raid appeared, and of course it's not functional. So now windows can see my ssd and it thinks it is seeing the RAID array, with the old name and everything but i don't get how. Should i uninstall the Matrix Storage Manager ?
EDIT: Uninstalling it solved the problem. I was sure i need it for sata controller.. -
ok i can't find the thread i was reading before.
I installed Bad Company 2 (which i think sucks but that's a different story), but i'm getting screen flcikering now... didn't happen before.
Crossfire enabled, and i have loaded the latest driver (which may be the problem)
on modern warfare 2 the screen is shakey....
-
ya, i need to figure this out, so far this is a horrible gaming platform
-
there should be a profile on the first page to fix bc2 with 10.5 beta..
what do you mean shaky screen on mw2 ? -
Use the latest crossfire profile update. It's on the front page. -
ok installed the BC2 fix - testing now
Shakey like when i go to toss a nade the screen SHAKES and i end up throwing it off the ceiling...
if someone is near me and i try to knife i end up knifing the floor,, crap like that... -
can you make a video as i never heard of such an issue before...
-
ok - thanks Joker, ATI fix worked for BC2...
I knew i had seen it somewhere!
ummm.. a video... i'll have to load fraps or xfire.... let me see... -
ya, i'll make a video soon, if i just press jump the screen freaks out
-
-
OMG - it was my friggin touch pad... even though it was disabled, for some reason i had to re-disable it in game.....

Hi everyone! I got an infraction from the mods of this forum. Man I didnt mean to offend anyone. Anyhow has anyone heard if they are going to offer the 5870 or is that really pure speculation on all our part? Just wondering. I want to get another M17X eventually andlet my wife use this one. When ever I open the laptop I see somone has been on facebook and a bunch of other sites I never visit. So she has been using this everytime I goto work. So if they did offer the 5870 I would get the single card and a better CPU. I may even get the red version. I preffer single graphics card. I dont like complications lol.
-
Did they fix the issues with the new comand center. I had mojor problems a few months ago with new one that came out and had to return tothe original.
-
Have you considered the m15x if you only want a single GPU? Coincidentally, the latest BIOS push for the m15x enabled support for the 5870s.

And a member here has put a Clevo 5870 into his M15x and is enjoying it fully
-
This is a dumb question, but can the i5 be upgraded to an i7 in the M17x-R2 or are they on different mobos?
-
same mobo, no problem to upgrade.
-
Cool thanks
-
Dilemma,
I can only keep one upgrade and both are around the same price.
Would you guys keep an i5 520M with a standard 7200rpm HD and 160 intel ssd, or an i7 720QM with just the standard 7200rpm hd. Which would be the bottleneck in your opinions? The most intensive thing I would do is probably play BC2 and any future games that come out. No photoshop or compiling. -
Definiteley go with the i7 and Standard 7200rpm hard disk. The ssd will not make much of a difference except for reading and writing. You can always swap out the hard drive later on with a better brand than the one dell offers.
-
Well both upgrades would be aftermarket upgrades.

Megacharge Custom User Title
The 520M is pretty impressive IMO, both cores will actually run at 2.66 under full load with the turbo boost enabled as opposed to their 2.4ghz stock clocks. These actually perform like a 2.93ghz Core 2 Duo, but with the added bonus of hyper threading. If you don't need the Quad don't bother with it for now. The 520M handles everything I do quite effortlessly, uses less power than the 720QM and runs cooler as well thanks to it being 32nm.
Based on my experience with the i5 520M I suggest you take it, with the SSD. You can always buy a QS/ES 820QM later on for like 300$ when you have the cash. The SSD WILL make a big difference.
EDIT: You are really better off doing it like this. There are video guides in this forum that show you how to swap the CPU's I've opened my system up many times on my R1 and a couple times on my R2. IMO and by experience it's very easy to swap the CPU's, and in the end getting the SSD now and an 820QM later will get you a much better and faster system for around the same price as getting the Quad now. IMO this is the best way to go. -
would you rather see the performance whilst booting up the pc, copying files, and so on. Or would you rather see the performance with cpu dependant games. Personally after opening my system twice, to get to the cpu, i would never try and go back in there. Where as for the hard drive, all you have to do is pop the back cover and remove a couple of screws. You can get a better quality hard drive off of newegg for a much lower price and use the one that comes with the system as an external hard drive to store all of your downloads.
-
Yeah I'm starting to lean towards the i5 too. The i7 would be an aftermarket upgrade. I already have the SSD, its a G2 Intel X-25 160. I don't forsee playing any tremendously CPU intense games, maybe starcraft 2 if that even counts. Thanks for the help guys.
-
I totally agree with Crylo.
520M is not anywhere near to be a bottleneck on the system. Haven't seen a game yet that would make me wish to upgrade. -
Since I don't want to open a new thread, I was wondering if anyone thinks the new OCZ Vertex 2 are really worth it compared to the first versions?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I would wait and let someone else be the guinnea pig for these new controllers
-
hey guys, can the fans be manually controlled on this system?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
afraid not
it is in our bios feature request list lol -
Yeah, it would be nice to have the option to set the controls to manual instead of the built-in auto.
Linux users beware!: in this case it's best to stay on auto as forgetfully leaving them off or lower rpm might fry your gear as the latest distros like to heat the GPU/CPU like hell. -
To bad i8kfangui31_x64 cant be updated for the M17x,that would of been
perfect.Seems like that software was abandoned after the older xps line with single gpu. -
Dell just told me some of the specs of the m17x im getting to replace my m1730
4870 mobility x2 in crossfire
Intel® Core i7 720QM 1.6GHz (2.8 GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache)
4gb ddr3 ram
looks good they said id get it in 7-10 buisness days. Now i get to feel cool and post all the time in the m17x thread =). Can't wait to try this thing out. -
what kind of screen did they give you ? is it the RGB ? if not i'd suggest begging
-
lol also forget about the 7 to 10 workdays part.
i'm already waiting 2 weeks on my m1730 replacement...
