*stunned in amazment* I actually think i'm going to be a M17x-R2 owner! *celebrates* How much do you think would be a good tip for the DHS driver? lol

My wife wants to know good birthday gift options... I'm thinking "Intel X25-M Mainstream SSDSA2MH160G2R5 2.5" 160GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)"
first before anything else from what iv'e read so far in here. What would you upgrade first?

Most of these already answered elsewhere, but here goes:
    - BIOS/flickering: fixed
    - Restore discs: comes with windows 7 disc and drivers disc. You can make a restore disc by running dell datasafe local & using the create disc option.
    - Caddy: should come with one, but many of us had to call to get the second. Call AW tech support and tell them you need caddy+interposer. Likely you'll get only one screw in the kit. They should next-day it to you.
    - Bag: may/may not fit in 17" bags. Really depends on the bag. The slant on the front and back coupled with the thickness will determine whether it fits. It's a really tight fit in my Wenger Pegasus.

AW Orion Backpack is the thing, been using it on a daily basis for 6 months. Very comfortable and there's a plenty of room to fit a few books in addition to the mouse and the PSU.
    Highly recommended.

Okay, great, thanks! I assumed Dell would leave out the caddy, but I guess that means I could just get a single drive. (Of course if they don't, that would mean I'd have to wait a week or whatever to actually start using the system :( )

I'm slightly confused by the system discs-do you mean they DO include the OS disc so you can do a clean install, like you used to be able to?

Hmm...well, sounds like it's a pretty solid fit for me, other than I'm getting used to not having to carry two bags with me. Oh well.

The system disc is Windows 7 and then they include a drivers/apps disc that you can use to reinstall the drivers/apps that came on the computer.. I would just recommend getting them from dell.com ect..

You can use the system disc to cleanly reinstall windows 7 as you would any other Windows 7 disc.

The Dell datasafe local is the replacement for respawn (never used respawn so I don't know how well it worked compared to ddsl). Ddsl makes a factory restore disc w/ all the aw customizations, wallpapers, etc. Or you can do a clean install from the win7 DVD.

Just a little comment. Now that the Side Topics is totally closed, we should at least get the Random Alienware thread back. What do you guys think? Maybe we should ask politely?

The 1440 screen is absolute garbage.

I have had both CCFL screens and they both are garbage but I would def go with the 1200p screen over the 1440.

The best choice would be the RGBLED obviously.

Sure, if you want to spend a ton of money.

Your best bet is to order that way to begin with. I have heard the RGBLED screen is VERY expensive to purchase seperately from Dell.

Awesome! Thanks! I'll just order the OS I want from Dell then. (I use my computer at work too, and Pro comes in handy every GREAT once in a while.)

Too bad about the screen quality, but just in terms of resolution, 1440x900 works great IMO. Better chance you can run everything at the native resolution, and obviously it's still super high resolution (it's higher than the game consoles can do).

You can replace the RAM with 1333 RAM on your own, but I won't if you already have 1066. I'm still wondering which it's best to order with. The 1066 probably has better timings, so I really don't know which is 'best' (and it wouldn't make any real-world difference...though I'm weird and want to order it with whichever is "best" since they're about the same price  )

    I must disagree.

1440 x 900 on a 17" screen looks really goofy. All the icons and text are quite large and it is not appropriate for a large notebook screen, IMO.

Alas, it all comes down to opinion with resolution ;)

And with the cards that are offered in the M17x you will not have any issues maxing out games at native res so that argument doesn't work so well in this situation. lol

for the GPU temps use HWInfo32

Nothing else but GPU-z (hardly ideal) is showing the 4870s temps

only benefit i can see from everest is that it's initializing much much faster than hwinfo32 on startup. other then that, there isn't really a reason. (there was when i had my m1730 and i wanted to write the temps to the logitech lcd and everest could do that for me)

ok so i got my m17x r2 last thursday and spent the week end setting it up and testing it for faulty crossfire cables etc.

    just have a few questions.

1)how exactly does the processor work? i have it 3% oced in bios which means the bus is increased 3% right?
2)on cpuz it almost always shows my processor turboed to above 3ghz no
matter what im running. does that mean its always running only on one core?
    3) is there anyway to sort of disable turbo and have all 4 processors running at above 3ghz? i noticed eleet only has the turbo multiplier option working so if i disable turbo in bios eleet would be useless right?

oh and since its a replacement for my r1 due to insane dpc latency, i ran dpc checker for a period of time and though its almost permanently green, i do get a few yellow bars and one sudden red spike(above 60k). it isnt at idle though and i was tabbing between games etc, is it normal or am i stuck with another dpc latency ridden machine?

eleet works by setting all of the turbo bins to a certain multi, essentially making it a full time oc

at 1, 2, or 4 cores active it can be at the set multi

Hi guys, having some keyboard issue with my M17xr2.

Whenever i type this ''^'' Its shift + 6? yes?

I have to type it twice for it to show up. Like shift + 66.

Even so, it will type out as ''^^''

Basically, when have to type shift+ 66 for anything to show up.

EDIT: Same for the " and ~

so does it mean if i set all cores to 26 multi it means all 4 cores are running at about 3.8ghz?

however even if i do not use eleet to oc, and just set the oc in bios to 3%, i almost always see the cpu speed at above 3ghz. does that mean its always on a single core? or does the bios oc also make all cores go over 3ghz?

the 3% is just the bus

if you see over 3 GHz, that is on one core, use tmonitor or other programs to confirm this

setting to 26x and 5% oc would get you to 3630 MHz

There is some type of latency in every system depending on drivers/apps used. It's only a problem if it's affecting performance.

Buy a different system, the M17x is not capable of it. Read the M17xR2 overclocking guide thread. It's discussed in there.

Odd...works fine on my system..no need to double press. Also is there a specific application that you are trying this in? I just tested it in Notepad, but if it's happening regardless of the application then not sure what it could be. Hope you find a solution though :)

Okay, I know this has been posted before but my search-fu and google-fu are failing me right now. I downloaded Everest to make sure XF is working and I'm just not sure how to read the durn thing. CCC seems to think all is well.

What's the sure-fire way for me to make sure XF is working right?

    Hi All,

I just received my M17x-R2 and had to reinstall windows due to not wanting to run RAID. Now I have a vanilla version of Windows 7 installed and would appreciate some advice as to where I can find the backgrounds, Avatar's and Logo's for the loading screen.

    Your assistance is appreciated.
