Just another reason why I was hoping we could write that M17x-R2 guide for dummies!! A simple guide to put the system together and test it out would be uber amounts of help. Has anyone even started this task?

If not, I was hoping we could have a volunteer.. I can't pay you but I'll try to rep you a bunch lol

Thank you sir, I'm surprised I got it so cheap, I thought it would cost me more than that considering it's Complete Care.

I'm not sure what the quoted price is but I paid less than I did when I bought the laptop. I'm pretty happy though, they just increased the resale value of my R2 for a very reasonable price.

is there anyway to force crossfire on certain programs like how u can force sli using nvidia control panel?

also, i tried using eleet to up all 4 turbo multipliers to 29 with 5% bios oc and when i ued hwinfo32 i sometimes saw all cores at 4ghz or sometimes 2-3 cores at 4ghz and 1 at 1.2ghz.. is it real or is it an error in the program? i thought if turboed beyond 3 ghz its only 1 core?

Try experimenting by turning turbo mode off in the bios and then OC and let us know how it does.

Yeah the layout can be changed I think. It's open for editing so have at it.

Edit: Just the front page has that cluttered blog interface. When you get to actual articles, it's a wide format. I added DR650SE's order advice for example: http://alienwarem17x.wikia.com/wiki/Ordering_advice

Edit 2: I removed the theme but now it's just a plain wide white one. Looks meh.

I recall that request and second it whole cloth. [IMG]

I've been pulling bits and pieces off the web and the NBR.com forums but usually things quickly move to more complex conversation and then terms and abbreviations that I don't know yet.

EDIT: Wow, that was quick. Thanks, Joker! :D

Hmmm, the prices I was quoted to extend my warranty (NBD incl. CC) were:
    $194 = 1 year
    $297 = 2 years
    $379 = 3 years
    $470 = 4 years

These were while I still have my M1730 and before the system tag for my M17x gets transferred in. The rep said it would be cheaper this way.

Thanks for posting because I need to call him and pull the trigger on that....

Nice I'm happy then, mine is with federal and provincial tax included, so that sounds correct. Although, I probably should have got 2 years at that price. Maybe I'll call them back tomorrow, and ask to bump it up to 2 years.

Extend it out as long as you can. After all, at this point, you're just "renting" the PC and will get a brand new one when it dies....

My M17x-r2 has finally shipped, and the senior resolver specialist has agreed to give me a few more concessions as a way to smooth things over. The parts we discussed upgrading are listed below as well as what it is shipping with. This system will mainly be used for gaming and some internet surfing etc.

    Shipping:
    i5 520
    6 G 1066 DDR3
    Dual 4870's in crossfire
    dvd burner

    Possible upgrades:
    i7 720
    8G 1333 DDR3
Dual 5870's in crossfire when available
    blue ray reader

I do not think I will be able to get all these, my obvious choice of items to drop is the blue ray reader since it does not increase over all system performance.

My question is which upgrades shout I fight for and which should I be willing to let go of.

    Just wondering,

what would happen if an i5 520M was used with 1333mhz RAM? The ram would just downclock to 1066mhz correct?

ya the ram will be downclocked because the memory controller on that cpu can't do the higher multiplier

This also helps me because if I can't get the i7 then there's no sense in getting the 1333 upgrade.

It will work, just not to the most of its abilities. As long is it is not the HyperX ram though, the timings should get better with the slow down in frequency which will make it a wash in performance just about

actually, HyperX does well too, just not the xmp crap

It's the standard Elipida 1333 mhz ram that Dell ships with the system. By the way, if anyone wants an OEM 920xm (none of that ES business), I'll be selling mine for $950 shipped.

If memory serves, it's an issue with the current alienfx firmware. Dell botched the last update and rolled back to an older version. Maybe a new version will come out someday (along w/ BIOS virtualization support)

I'm sure you've said, but this is a huge thread; why are you selling your R2? I just ordered one off of ebay after thinking about it for a good while. I thought about waiting for the 5870's to become available, but then I stumble onto your video on youtube of Bad Company 2, and I was sold since that and Left 4 Dead 2 are my main games. So thanks for pushing me over the edge. :D

After being reminded what a great job their drivers can do even just on processing overly dark video, it really makes me want Nvidia even more :(

I just loaded my first dvd to install a game (Wolfenstein) and the drive sounds like a jet engine spooling up for about the first 20 seconds or so. Is this normal?

Also I am concerned about the build quality, the joint between the keyboard and palm rest is wavy. They meet up perfectly in some places and in others there is a noticeable gap. The keyboard is also higher in the middle than it is on both ends.
