It should still be possible to order the R2 if we do not want an R3, correct? (Since it seems R1 was only just taken down from order a week or two ago.)

    Check out these idle temps.

I put my laptop on top of my AC floor vent and had a fan on blowing on it.

did you ever compare image quality of Standard Divx movies played with ATI vs Nvidia GPU's, Nvidia's rendering is much better ... ; with HD content, this isn't that obvious, but with higly compressed DVD's (700mb) the difference is staggering

about the latency, i believe it can be fixed with reducing the prerendered frames from 3 to 1 in the nvidia control panel, but i could be wrong

I have had the complete opposite experience with the multitude of nvidia graphics cards I've had in my desktops and laptops. The ATI cards have always had much sharper and vivid color reproduction as well as superior HD playback. The tv out function has always worked much better as well. Nvidia has always seemed to have a more washed out picture than the ATI.

strange, for me tv out never worked with my ati cards, it never detected the tv and if i play a divx on my notebook it looks much better than when i play the same movie with the same software (MPC + ffdshow+ac3filter) on my desktop which has an ATI card (the image is much better, less jagged edges/interlacing)

Eurocomm x8100 (Clevo x8100) isn't new but it looks like the ati cards for it is. Before it was sold with 285M SLI. The x7200 is supposed to replace it soon.

Not only does the x8100 look ugly, it's also more expensive than a comparable spec M17x.

It'll be interesting to see if the x8100 with 5870s can use the standard ATI 10.5 drivers. If they do, and Dell/ATI don't get the M17x's 5870s working on standard drivers, maybe we'll have a workaround.

So I had the new M17x for a week and I came across couple problems which I was hoping to fix on my own. First was my palm rest had marks which could not be erased. Second was some of the keys (the rubber below was misplaced) so it kept missing whenever I tried to type. Third was the Indicator part had a broken part at the bottom so it didn't fit perfectly. I tried replacing all of these but again the new palm rest left a little gap in the middle, second the new keyboard is squeaking, third the "new" indicator part came used with minor scratches everywhere. My customer care rep offered me a new replacement in the beginning which I declined trying to fix it on my own but now I changed my mind. They can still process the replacement right?

Just tell them to send you a replacement and keep the one you have now until it arrives. I had a M15x-R2 with a dead pixel which they tried replacing the screen and ended up damaging my computer with 4 different techs.

hey doublee. My m17x palm rest also came with "shiny" parts on it. I think it could just be a manufacturer bad batch or something.

My 5870's are messed up though. Returning the system, and ordered an aurora desktop.

Hopefully the desktop's performance isn't as weak as the m17x's

    they told me
"It is not uncommon to have a fixed dark or dead pixel, A display with 1 to 5 fixed pixels is within the industry standards. If you notice more than six (6) fixed pixels on your display, or if there are several fixed pixels in a small area of the screen, please advise us or contact Technical support on (AU) 1300 655 533 / (NZ) 0800 446 255"

Looks like they are not going to do a replacement :( any other strategy i can use?

in AU we have 15 days instead of 21 in US, and yes i am in it. but the difference here is that AU may charge me A$175 like restocking fee in US, even I reorder a new ALIENWARE i think. do u guys think it's worthy to do that?

You should explain that you are not satisfied with a machine that you paid premium buck for arrives with dead pixels, thus you either want to return it and reorder a new one or to have a replacement issued.

    i think they'll help out.

    good luck!

Be firm but polite on the phone, don't let them keep you with something you are unsatisfied with. In general Dell reps are quite okay, and they want happy customers. You paid alot of money to them so they should help you, if they don't i bet this will be your last dell/alienware machine, thats something they don't want, so if you do well on the phone, you'll get what you want

nb: a little tip, prepare the phonecall, write down any arguments you want to use, think about all the possible ways the conversation could go and anticipate on what you will be saying in a certain situation. keep your notes at hand when calling and never loose your cool, if you get unfriendly (shouting/swearing) it will have a bad effect on what they will be prepared to do for you

    good luck

yes, you are right. I just talked to a tech for half an hour. after some testing (they said they want to make sure it's not a software issue and see if my machine have other problems), they will arrange an engineer come to replace my screen. this Friday or early next week.
However, i've heard from here that DELL's engineer is not very skilled and careful on ALIENWARE specially. Hope they will send a better one here.

It seems that Asus G73 owners can use official drivers on their 5870 cards.
Too bad the Asus is a plastic piece of junk with no crossfire and horrible support ... (cards go to 98°C on their machines, :p)
