Woah its dead in here!! where is everybody? lol
Ok so i got a question for you all:
How long is battery life on the BEAST? not gaming... just you know... bare minimum stuff like browsing the net and typing something up on word. Also there's only one battery available for the M17x right?
Second, the configuration details Dell sent me says it comes with a 150watt ac adpater... i thought it was 220-240watt or something to power dual hdds, dual gpus and an extreme processor???
The M15x already maxed out its 150watt psu with a 1 5870 and a XM processor??
am i missing something?
Also, anything in particular i should watch out for? recurring issues? Or has the recent bios A09 solved alot of things?
any complaints about the system?
I'm a M15x veteran but a M17x Newbie... so who wants to help me out![]()

You only get the 240W adapter if you have either dual gpus or the extreme cpu
Since you will have neither, 150W for you. -
Well then... Looks like I got some convicing to do! Looks like I'll call up Dell again
-
-
lol i got some tricks up my sleeve
i always do
-
-
lol no... if i was crapping 100$ bills maybe... but the only thing that comes outta there aint pretty LOLL.
I'm going to push for the to give me a 240watt psu anyways because i want to upgrade in the "near" future.
At the same time... i'm also thinking of just going for dual GPU's now since it will probably be cheaper...than upgrading later.. -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
-
nono... i'd pay for that! LOLL
-
Sweet. Ok so it's official!
my M17x will be configured as:
i7 740qm
8gb DDR3 (got bumped to 8 from 6 after some convincing woohoo!)
500gb hdd
5870m
1200p RGB LED
intel wlan 6300
ANDDDDD a 240 watt psu
not too shabby ... can't wait to drop a second 5870m and a 940 in that BEAST -
Did they cancel your previous order and placed a new one?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
Nice work on the psu!
-
@ Anodize ... yea well the order was never placed... they keep sending me the configuration by email asking me if i want to go through with the order. and i keep objecting saying "umm well there's ONE MORE THING that needs to be fixed first"
.. ahaha i LOVE dell
-
-
you're right there isn't... but i've been dealing with a lvl 3 tech support agent part of the engineering team, that has been specifically assigned my case... so he could pretty much do whatever he wants.. already issuing a M17x as a replacement for a M15x isn't part of the "norm" and he told me its actually the first time he's done something like this...
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
-
lol yea i've been dealing with him since may
we're on good terms... or actually hes probably just fed up of me and will do anything to get rid of me! Lolz
EDIT: Can someone give me the dimensions of the M17x? i can't seem to find them :s -
Dimensions

No idea honestly... hey the forums are back up n working!

Hi guys any of you M17x owners got the Alienware Orion Backpack
ME-AWBP2.0?
Im wondering if you have xtra space or is your laptop tight, im looking for a backpack for my x7200.
Cheers -
Nice laptop... happy with it? Any complains so far? It's pretty much a desktop crammed in a relatively small package loll...
But i would say it fits. That backpack is huge. -
The Alienware Orion Backpack (ScanFast) ME-AWBP2.0 says the laptop compartment only handles 2" but mine is 2.2-2.4 do you think there is enough space to sqeeze the x7200 in? -

So I finally loaded up Steam on my machine and got Dirt 2 and MW2 downloading (had both for a while but never got steam haha)
Why the hell is the multiplayer of MW2 a separate 11 GB game?! -
And there's still room.

Not sure about US, but in EMEA it's not a problem for the reps to change the PSU. I alwaus ask for the 240W when helping friends config their M17x's. -

i have an extra 240w charger (without the cable from charger to outlet) which i dont use. if anyone interested tell me

EMEA=Europe Middle East & Africa
-
Aristotel, what kind(brand) of antiglare protector do you have and where'd you get it from? Thx.
mfractal, I see. Thx -

M17X anti-glare items - Get great deals on Computers Networking items on eBay.com!
buy whichever you want. i tried them both. Both really make some nice job with a minimum side effect on the screen clarity.
I really never care for sunlight any more since i first used them. -

Well the M17x is now being sold on newegg as well
Newegg.com - DELL Alienware M17x(m17x10-1847DSB) NoteBook Intel Core i7 740QM(1.73GHz) 17.0" 6GB Memory 500GB HDD DVD±R/RW Dual ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870
Looks the same as the MicroCenter and Frys offerings (although MicroCenter one has blu-ray) -

It is a shame that none of the stores are carrying the RGBLED screen
-
isn't it the RGB screen ? I can't find them mentioning it either way.
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
All of the prebuilt ones are WXGA (1440x900) which is a total fail
-
i got offered a 2nd 5870m from dell for 370.86$ shipped+installed.
Think this is a good price?
he said he was able to take off 10% (was ~410 initially) -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
I would take that lol
-
Even if ebay had one for a slightly cheaper price I would get it from dell. Better warranty and service. Good stuff.
Cheers. -
If yes, then go grab it.
Btw, did they place your order? Still interested to see what it looks like. -
I actually prefer the lower resolution, but I won't do florescent screens anymore.
-
Free Crossfire promotion reads like Alienware might be clearing stock, for something new.
Mobility 6870? GTX 470M? Who knows.... -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
if they do SLI GTX 470m.....WIN!
-
sli gtx 470m would be sweet... but i have a feeling they'll just wait for sandybridge and just release a whole new revision...
-
well apparently the 460m is just behind the 5870m... so the 470m should basically be a tad more powerful or on par... with of course Physx support, and better driver support...
but i honestly haven't heard much for the 470m... but i have heard that the 460m is behind the 5870m... -
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
probably be like this:
GTX480m
GTX470m
5870m
GTX460m
4870m
GTX285m/GTX280m
GTX260m
Enabling PhysX will drag down frame rates as it consumes GPU resources so you have to take than into account, since a GTX 470m with PhysX enabled will probably be slower than a 5870m
What is really exciting, is Fermi scale much better than anything in crossfire at the moment so GTX 470m SLI should be awesome (if it is ever released)
-
^^^^^ Yea i was thinking the exact same...
Anyone know if you can flash a fermi vbios to a non fermi card? I've read that the only difference between fermi cards n gaming cards (assumign same hardware specs, or close) are that fermi cards have a seperate team of engineers that work out much better optimized vbios and drivers for the work than professionals users will be doing... and the gaming cards are given sloppy poorly optimized vbios' n drivers (with much less time and research spent on them).
If this is true, wouldn't that essentially mean, that one can flash a fermi bios onto a normal card? and get like a 200% improvement on performance??
i know i know... i'm dreaming in color aren't i...
