Long time since I posted Cpu bench from my Alienware 17 in this thread. From the last normal and decent 17,3 inches laptop from Dellienware factory. But here it is... Cinebench R15 and Wprime 1024M

Seeing the Alienware 17 R1 rekt the latest BGA crop, limited choice, cripple with hybrid power all over even from MSI and tripod mess, Falsification from the new Alienware, tons of (PSU gate, Throttle, HS lottery) Alienware issues even the R4 & using LM to masquerade, new Overpriced Overheating Throttle garbage infested with Win10 to Oblivion running the Windows 7 and benched by OC master Papusan with the last of the true Mobile Extreme i7 chip 4930MX, Makes me feel refreshed. Shows how the CPUs were back then we are using the socketed & not crippled HW. Thank you @Papusan for this.

I want to break 900 now. We'll see what happens after replacing my motherboard.

Not that I desire to fix someone elses product, its unfortunately someone elses problem; the consumer.

I wonder if the microcode exploit would bypass the throttling? Im sure you might have seen it on the Notebook Dummy Guides section its been getting a little traction of late.

Either way I look forward to replacing my motherboard lol, I really want to overclock this thing like nobodies business. I have my Java exam tonight and am not confident at all T,T t-minus 3 hours.

That's for M17xR4 ... The Alienware 17 Ranger (2013) is M17xR5 or the more common name M17-R1. Which machine do you have?

Ok that is indeed the ranger not the M17xR4, this means that the items you linked are from a different machine.

I actually like the Ranger and upgradable machines in general, but each has their own preference. Now you can get a 980m for as low as 300$, combining that with the correct 120Hz screen and you got a very nice machine without breaking the bank. Also, some members here already managed to use a 1070m in the machine, so you still have decent upgrade path.

Ask around the forums here for the right screen and cables, I actually have both for sale but I am in Europe so that will take like at least 2 weeks shipping time. There has to be someone here in the US that has these items for sale.

As for the 980m, you are in luck because the Ranger can take both AW and Clevo 980m so you won't have trouble finding one.

    Compatible: Yes.
Good: Can't comment, as I only buy cheap parts from China like fans and heatsinks. Because if something happens during shipping I wouldn't feel so bad and usually they are too cheap to even consider shipping them back if they don't work.

If you are in the UK, I believe you can easily find one in the EU or UK that you can buy maybe a bit more expensive but safer.

    The screen and cable?

Of course as good as new. I don't believe the screen have even a minor scratch on it and the cable was new bought from DELL when I installed it and it stayed there.

For price send me a PM with your address and we can work something out.

Its my first Glossy display, so while I dont like wiping down every day because of the dust it was a noticeable upgrade over the standard panel.

Its 6-bit though I think, so if production work is your thing you may want to dig a little more and make sure its right for you.

The Cable: VAS00 LVDS CABLE EDP DC02C004000
The screen: Dell PN (GN36T, 0GN36T). You are looking for Samsung sec5044 - LTN173HT02(P01) - 40pin. My understand is that any LTN173HT02 would do except the 50pin one.

Hey bud is there any reason for parting with the Ranger ?
And you opted for the Haswell machine again from Clevo, Why not go for the Z370TM1, maybe that's a better investment or even the Z170/270 P870DMx Gen 1-2/KM1 Gen 3.

I got the CLEVO barebone brand new for super cheap, and I practically could put almost everything from my ranger in it. I also like the style of that particular machine (Not as flashy as the new ones) and Clevo P37xSM-A can take up to SLI 1070m :D and 120Hz beautiful LG edp panel.

If at any time you need parts for your ranger tell me, I may have it.

Anything wrong with the motherboard and how much you want for it?

I think the VRMs are damaged on mine since I cant overclock the CPU past 3.6Ghz, instantly hitting VRM thermal limits in TS/HWinfo

The motherboard used to act funny sometimes and refuse to boot unless I reset the bios and then it works fine sometimes for weeks or months and then out of the blue does it again and needs a reset again. So I wouldn't be comfortable selling that to someone, unless you want to buy it as defective, then I will see how much do defective motherboards run for.

I wonder if I have the ability to transplant the VRMs lol

Hmm never did a vmod like they do on desktops GPU's

Any ideas if the system would oppose transplanting larger VRMs into the motherboard? Obviouly they are reading temperatures I guess and would have no idea if replacement VRMs would give that information to the system and thus cause automatic throttling because of it...

    @Khenglish

Thinking khenglish might have better idea on this than I would...

I am not sure I have seen anyone who had VRM temp issues. did you check if they have proper contact with CPU heatsink? I remember they need 0.5mm thermal pads because for some reason DELL believes that the contact without pads is ok while it most certainly isn't.

I believe I have pads but I will check the next time I open up the case.

Were talking about those 3 gray square boxes under the plate right? I always mix up the VRM and mosfets but if so I am leaning towards not having any in that location.

EDIT: I may want the keyboard if its in clean shape. The one thing on this one is film is wearing off and some of the keys are breaking. I wasnt concerned with that since I could replace later lol

I bought this used, the keyboard works fine but some of the numpad keys wont lock back in and there is foxing around the corners. I just got it this way.

I just checked and my VRMs are not heatsinked. I tried adding the thinnest pads I had on hand and the temps go straight up to 100c even with an extra o-ring to force more pressure. I guess I probably have 1.0mm pads so when I get more cash again ill order some 0.5mm pads and try again.

I'd almost try thermal paste if I wasnt worried about conductivity or gravity. Not being able to overclock this machine was a bit of a bummer but I need to do more work overall to the cooling in general though. splicing a PWM switch, lapping heatsink (11c core variance is not cool), wiring in another fan, making another exhaust and lastly cooling the VRMs.

Lastly I need to get back in contact with an ebay seller about custom fabricating a heatsink and trying to get a net cost to sell. I want to know if he can manufacture a heatsink with two radiators, 4 uniform heatpipes, more mass via length and fin density in the main heatsink. Its why I want to add another fan to the then empty center HDD bay. Would definitely require more frame modding on our ends though.

I was waiting until I finished Java to do all these things but I failed the exam and moved to other courses so once again things are on hold...

As I expected. 1mm is way too thick and it will bring the entire heatsink up. Try to find a very soft 0.5mm thermal pad (Preferably a generic pad as branded ones aren't as soft).
11c core variance on LM? if you have such variance and not using LM, then go for the thickest paste possible IC diamond or the new one Fox recommends I don't remember its name.

Yeah will do, when I got this machine the original heatsink didnt have thermal pads either so I didnt think much of it.

So I guess the main trivia would be to figure out how to properly cool the last VRM that isnt covered by the plate. I could use some copper mosfets easily enough but getting air over them is the tricky bit. Its mostly covered by the heatpipes above it.

How do you think stacking thermal pads to make contact with the heatpipes fair? Would it actually transfer or just heat soak?

I am doing something similar on the Clevo, I stacked thermal pads from the PCH all the way up to the keyboard (around 6mm) to use keyboard bottom plate as huge heatsink for the PCH. PCH temps dropped from 85c at full load to 60c. So, I don't see why your idea with the rouge VRM wouldn't work.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'll give it shot once I can move forward with that.

Now that we have had this conversation I feel stupid for assuming the configuration of the laptop as I got it was completely stock. I had been asking around on the forum here and there about it and now I feel bad considering how long I had been tinkering with desktops and laptops

When I personally sell something used I always tell the buyer all of the dark secrets of my tinkering so he would know what is going on. Some people are lazy though and just sell and let others figure out what is going on.

I am of the same merit.

This ebay seller was probably the worst experience I ever had on ebay thus far. The 240w AC adapter died within minutes of playing siege then they would only pay me half the cost to replace it. Citing that they are just a storefront and not a repair service. Because thats a counter argument to responsibility I guess. I gave them negative review and they successfully had it removed by claiming I was extorting from them by hanging a positive review ransom. I got it reversed but I cant leave my feedback anymore because ebay is a stellar platform.

I was rather jaded about the whole affair after but I got the laptop I wanted so I dont know.

yeah, its why I fear large ticket items on their platform.

On the other hand. The replacement heatsinks, pads, LM, 120hz panel + assembly + cable, HDD interposer cable + cage all came quickly and in working order.

I still have my LVDS panel and monitor assembly and was thinking about getting one of those controller boards for it. Would make for a nice secondary display and would totally convince anyone coming to my pad that I am a Alienware fanboy lol.

I really only like the AW17 R1 though, anything else by Alienware misses one or more of my checkboxes that I cant fix like HDD capacity or I/O placement and type of keyboard. Its why I didnt get the R4

I've recently placed .5mm arctic pads on the 2x chokes which are covered by the HS, and another one on the 3rd non covered choke which is arranged in an 'L' fashion in contact with the chassis (divider/material between the fan bay and cpu area). Building it up to meet the heatpipe sounds like a great idea

Previously at 4.2ghz it was hitting the VRM thermal throttle point at about 25% into the long TS bench, after chucking the pads in its VRM throttling at about 32-35% of the way through.

anyone running that 4pipe CPU HS available on ebay, Is there more material/mass compared to the stupidly flimsy factory unit?
