I'm trying to make sure that my CPU is functioning properly. My Vantage score is 20647 with no overclocks. Not using throttlestop, not using any FSB OC's, nothing - everything is @ stock. Is this score appropriate? Douse said that my CPU score should be around 17000. Mine is closer to 15. AMD Radeon HD 6970M / 6990M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-950 Processor,Alienware score: P20647 3DMarks.

I recently reformatted my machine and wasn't able to install Drivers and Downloads | Dell [United States] not sure if that makes a difference or not, but when I try to install it, it says that the system doesn't meet the minimum requirements for the software.

The reason that I'm concerned is because of SC2. A week ago everything was working perfectly until all of a sudden things went bad. Long story short, I thought I remember being able to fight maxed army against maxed army in SC2 without any framerate drop on ultra, but I can't do that. My fps goes from 60 to 40/45 (vsync is on) when fighting with a maxed army in the opponents base. I can't recall if that was also the case a week ago, but I don't think it was. I put in a new xfire cable, a new PSU and reformatted and it cleared up most of my issues, but this one still seems to be apparent. Even on low settings I still get that framerate drop when fighting with a maxed army, though I was supposed to reboot the game for all settings to take place and I didn't do that. Maybe there was a CPU setting that couldn't get changed without rebooting. I'll check that later. I feel, however, with my setup and stock clocks I should be able to maintain 60 FPS throughout any sort of combat. I can't even imagine how badly I'd lag in a 2v2 late game, let alone a 4v4. Just walking around with the maxed army is fine, but when I start to attack - the frame rate drops.

Any ideas? Should my CPU be functioning better? Is 14909 an appropriate score? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

@IntenseIGFX -- maybe a little light, but close enough, assuming "stock" means R2 stock (24-24-24-24 @62W/62A). The 62W TDP will limit the CPU to 19.5x. If you kick TDP up to ~80-85W, your CPU can utilize the full 24x and the CPU score will jump to 19-20K.

The Turbo Boost driver is just a Windows gadget that demonstrates the operation of TB. Serves no functional purpose. Looks like this with a 920XM, but the blue bar rises and falls to reflect changing frequencies as the boost varies:

Thanks, but I'm not sure about messing with the power settings since my GPU is already taking more power than the machine expected because I added the 6990's. Not sure how that will affect it. Also, you mean use throttlestop to do that? Won't I have to open throttlestop every time I want to use it?

I'm not suggesting that you increase TDP or make any other change regarding your CPU, just explaining why a CPU set to 24x across the board operates far below its theoretical performance level and what it takes to capture that potential. ThrottleStop is the means for those inclined to such behavior with the 940/920XM.

I have throttlestop autostarting everytime I boot Windows. It hides in the tray like a ninja. And when I say ninja, I mean ninja because it does things that one would never think possible in a laptop.

I dunno, this is what I do:

Firstly I set the TDP (80/99 although short time limit is disabled) in XTU, I press apply, it won't ask for reboot. Here is the catch! You need to go into Throttlestop and click TPL to see if it registers, if the new values are shown you MUST CLICK "OK".

Next I restart. Then I set my multipliers: 44x across everything, I also set the current: 110(A). When I hit apply this time, it prompts reboot. When it reboots, I go into the bios and check that the PriPlane is 880 (8x110). Those who are familiar will know what I'm talking about. Those who aren't will learn about it when I put up section 3 of my guide :D Boot into windows, run wPrime and make sure everything stays full. I have Throttlestop running all the time. Throttlestop TRL's are also set to 44x. Top 3 lines checked with Multiplier @Turbo.

I dunno if I'm doing any different to you but that's just how I roll.

I'm getting to the same places except that I'm changing most settings (TDP, Pwr. time limit, PriPlane) directly in the BIOS, then using XTU mostly to change multipliers and the occasional TDP adjustment. Have been using T-Stop only for hard benching, but not otherwise. When I use it, I do conform TRL settings to the XTU multipliers, but I really have detected no linkage at all;if the T-Stop multipliers vary from XTU, XTU controls. On the TPL screen, both Power Limits and the Current Limit track the BIOS most of the time; occasionally, a change isn't picked up until the T-Stop config file is deleted and T-Stop is restarted, at which point it picks up the changes. Or, if I'm in a hurry, I just change the TPL manually. Again, though, the T-Stop settings don't seem to control anything, just report. Could be wrong of course; will pay more attention. When I do use T-Stop, I'm set up just like you.

Ever since my R1, throttlestop always on the top ten startup applications i used.

I'm on 1000 priplane atm, the only way to get higher multiplier is increase flex up to 30 and over (lower your bclk too)

Throttlestop is pretty useful since it can manipulated the turbo boost and multiplier at will... monitor CPU and GPU temp too.
If you used profiles and hotkey manager you will see what i mean, i made 4 profiles :

    1. for daily use (first profile, can be anything i change my mind all the time)
    2. for game that don't require CPU much but heating up like hell if you leave it at max OC (disable TurboBoost or set multiplier to my liking, lower the heat)
    3. for OC maxed out with 100% mod options checked (log file)
    4. for battery mode, auto switch when unplugged. (disable TB and enable Powersave option)

Magic i found and learned across the forum ^^ :

    - If you disable C1E in throttle stop => you'll get extreme fast SSD writing's speed (almost double)

    - If you change the TPL, your comp thinking it's running at extreme OC but in reality it does nothing. (see screenshot in attachment, actually im running 45 44 43 43)

    - With XTU you can set the power limit, after the reset check the throttlestop's TPL again, all the options was unlocked even tho' u was using non-extreme CPU.
But your turbo time limit will stuck at 48 (not 56) .. to make it back to 56 you have reset bios settings to defaults > then check throttlestop again > all options in TPL are grey out.

    - If you enable C7 (only available in unlocked bios), it will set the CPU into deeper sleep mode .. you can check it out on C7 tab in throttlestop. (was C6r)

    - When you put the computer into sleep mode (this work on non-extreme CPU) and wake it up again somehow it unlocked the max VID and you can even go 99W in benchmark. (watch closely the VID monitor in throttlestop)

    that's it for now :)

Wow 5.5Ghz! For realz? My laptop won't boot above 44x. Unless I add voltage but then temp skyrocket. Can yours bench at that speed? I know some people have their CPUs much higher than mine but they can't run a benchmark at the full speed whilst mine can. I have no idea why.

Also do you realise that Throttlestop cannot independently set multis? As in say you have XTU set to 40x. Throttlestop profile is 32/32/34/35. Even on 4 cores, the multi will be 35x. I contacted UncleWebb about this he says that he doesn't know the separate registers of Sandy Bridge CPUs so nothing can be done about it.

With a 200/200 army attacking a pile of rocks my power usage gets to about 210. 215-220 TOPS when my maxed army is attacking another one. I drop to about 45 when attacking a pile of rocks (voidrays / collosi / archons -- just stalkers stays @ 60) and about 30 when attacking a maxed army. Is there something I can do to make it so that I don't ever slow down against another army? I'd be fine palying on high instead of ultra, but I should be able to play SC2 with no slow down. Slow down = ty micro.

    Any ideas?

edit: oops, thought i was posting in the other forum. One thing is odd though : the 5% FSB OC seemed to make my performance WORSE. Not sure why.

EDIT: For whatever reason, in SC2 my CPU usage is only like 25% or so. Any way to get this higher? I went to set affinity and enabled all processors. Didn't do anything.

Intense i don't own and don't play SC2 but the 25% cpu usage could be just the game being more GPU bound than CPU bound and you are worried for nothing?

A BIOS update will definitely be necessary, just think of the new HD4000 for example... no chance it'll work with the same BIOS as the HD3000.

LOL. After I saw that 5.5GHz, I had to try setting the single core multi to 50x in XTU to see whether the HW64 Summary would report CPU Turbo at 5.0GHz/50x. Wouldn't boot, locking up at the flying Windows screen. Had to disable Turboboost in the BIOS to get back in and reduce the multiplier (took a moment to figure that out). So, what's the deal devillucifer? You can't drop that kind of firecracker into the crowd and then not share the secret.

Didn't realize that the TRL settings in ThrottleStop serve as a limit on the multipliers set in XTU, but a little experimentation confirms the fact. Good catch, Widezu69. :) +Rep when allowed.

This does not sound good: "Also the Core i7 3920XM is based on a different manufacturing then 2nd Generation Sandy Bridge Processors so using it on older rPGA988B HM65 and HM67 motherboards ain’t feasible." :(

On the other hand, this is confusing -- WPrime 32M: Core i7 3920XM (Stock): 13.058 Sec. Doesn't say which version of wPrime, but doesn't exactly knock your socks off.

All based on comments/tests reported in http://wccftech.com/intels-fastest-22nm-mobile-ivy-bridge-chip-core-i73920xm-tested/, linked by GeoCake. +Rep when allowed.

about the 55x ! please read my post again, i did say it's only for show off! we can set it to any multiplier we want with throttlestop ! but the real speed still depend on XTU and the voltage/watt/amps

"Throttlestop cannot independently set multis" ??

what do you mean ? i can do it just fine here, i just tested it again.. it works.
i set it to 44/44/43/43 in XTU for daily use... but sometime i don't need that much !

in TRL i set it to something like 44/44/44/44 or higher.

now ! tick the Set multiplier option > from turbo, keep pressing the button "decrease multiplier" from "turbo" to 43 to 42 .. to 40 ! now try TS bench
you will see it running with 40 multiplier instead of 43 (all cores).

i think he got the 3920XM but .. don't wanna leak more info.
and the date inside the screenshot is pretty up to date in his post too.
    any1 noted the 3920XM only have 4Mbytes lv.3 cache ?

LOL. The turbo trick works for show. HWINFO64 picks up the ThrottleStop setting instead of the actual multiplier set by XTU. +Rep when allowed.

@devil, I set 44/44/44/44 in XTU. Then when I use Throttlestop, I set 37/37/39/40 with 37 for all cores, and 40x on only 1 core. Then I run TS bench. My multi's will be @40 instead of 37 that I want regardless of how many threads I want.

I am aware of the "Set Multi" option but I want different multi's for different core configurations wihtout touching XTU. Throttlestop can't do this with Sandy Bridges.

The manufacturing process doesn't have anything to do with the compatibility...
From what I've heard it should be possible (provided there's a BIOS update), but running the IB chips on a SB board will not bring the same performance as with the newer chipset.
If it's gonna be like this, then the BIOS update will be the problem, I have some doubts that Dell will provide this

lol, we waiting for your good news !
is there anyway we can add new CPU to the current A08 bios by ourself ?
(i mean with the help of those bios modding expert, some guru like thewiz perhap)

thx will rep back :D it would be awesome if it does work lolz.

yea ! but even with XTU you need to restart each time you want a higher multi combo.
Look at the bright side ! throttlestop can decrease the multi, with hotkey manager you can manual set the multiplier while benchmarking or gaming (so the heat is alway in control).

i set the multi to the highest possible with 0 flex and decent amps.. sometime disable HT to lower the heat.
now i can lower the multi whenever i want or even disable turbo boost (for low-cpu-intense-game/movie/web... max non-turbo ratio is more than enough)

Same reason I believe that 2nd gen i7 could possibly work on the PM55 platform. ASRock has a motherboard called the "Transformer" that basically uses a P67 PCH (Platform Controller Hub) with a P55 chipset (which means it can run Sandy Bridge through Socket 1156). I haven't seen anyone try putting a i7 2xxx chip in a PM55 system and I think the socket will fit. Would be interesting to see if a microcode update or even a pin mod would at least get it to post...
