You can definitely type a higher number in. I've seen nothing that confirms anything beyond the card not accepting it.

LOL, ttnuagmada if you think no card has adjustable voltages go take a look at the M15x bench thread ;) I can tell you my 5850 didn't run those scores at stock voltage it needed more juice ;) That message is probably just to keep people that don't know exactly what they're doing and risking from doing something stupid and trying to hold the RBE creator liable. The 6970 may not be able to change voltages but that's not due to tolerance it's due to the physical specs of the card, I think it was Joker who stated that most of the Barts cards lack the component necessary to be able to change the voltage from the factory preset and apparantly this is happening with the majority of the mobile barts cards.

We're talking about boosting the voltages higher than the highest selectable in RBE. You raised your voltage, but it was from a pre-set selection and you cannot raise it higher than that. Any attempt to raise the voltage higher than the highest listed (which is 1.15 for both the 4xxx and 5xxx im pretty sure) and you blue screen. This is what i'm talking about. The 6970 vbios doesn't have any available at all to select. I was saying that if no one has found a way to push the 4xxx and 5xxx cards higher than 1.15v, that I doubt anything can be done for the 6970. I posted that message because it leads me to believe that this is something that is hardwired and probably not able to be modified.

Also,I know how to overclock, I posted the 2nd highest R1 vantage score on page 2. :D

Here is the latest of my benchmarks. Shaved 23 sec of my previous time. Be sure to check out the min temps. ;) I kinda flubbed and the temps went up to 80*, but the CPU still sustained the 27 multi the entire time.

But some cards show nothing other than stock voltages in the drop down "selectable" boxes when working a vbios in RBE, the 5850 was a primary example there it only showed stock voltages but you could increase them by I believe it was .15 or .20 volts over stock just fine, you could increase them further without a bsod but the card refused to go to 3D clocks at higher than those voltages. The 6970 again has no other selectable voltages but you can manually input the voltage levels, the only problem is it bsod's before it even gets to windows. This is either something within the vbios itself or its missing something on the card to allow voltages other than factory settings. So all I was saying is your statement that it's not possible because it doesn't show in the selectable field isn't correct in all situations.

Pretty sure it has to do with a disagreement between the driver and the card/vbios

Off topic, but I've been playing Shift 2, and it has some very nasty flickering when CrossFire is forced through RadeonPro. A single 6970M is looking more and more appealing every day.

I finally accomplished a goal of mine. Ran Vantage at 1GHz on the GPU Core. Ran with the clocks of 1000MHz on the core, 1300MHz on the memory. Broke 21K GPU score and set a new high score for myself.

I also ran wPrime1024M in sub 200sec. Which was another goal. Also set a record for wPrime 32M. Yesterday was a good day benching.

Cooling on Dry Ice. I tried out a makeshift DICE pot, but the cooling wasn't as efficient as this method, and since dry ice doesn't turn to a liquid, I had no issues, other then burns to the fingers :p I'd still like to get an effective dice pot, that would make things much easier.

How long do those blocks last? Also where did you get them and at what cost? ;)

You just owned my chest freezer on temps haha

Haha, yea its very very crude, but it's effective. The blocks you see there last maybe 15 min, it depends, the smaller they get, the faster they sublimate.

I get the dry ice from an ice cream shop in town. They sell it so peple can transport thier tasty treats. It's $1.75/lb and yesterday I went through 8lbs, and the day before about 5 lbs. That lasted me through several hours of benching. I need to get some 3DMark11 runs done, but i lock up while 3/4 the way through loading the "combined" test. I'm actually headed to get some Chipotle and another 8lbs of dry ice, to do some 3DMark11 runs while I pack :p

Haha will do. Probably a gold cup for the most crude and irresponsible dice cooling lol. You should call around see if an ice cream shop near you sells. The pack your chest freezer with it and hit that 15k!

I think my problems were everything but cooling :(

I cant get more voltage into the CPU and the memory bandwidth still nosedives when I use TS :(

The GPUs may get a tad higher than they were for my current scores but still voltage limited on them as well

Still looking at moving to the DC area?

Me and UncleWebb concluded it must be a timing issue in the memory controller of the chipset and therefore something only a bios change would fix if anything. The memory controller does not like the mismatch that is introduced when multi overclocking in TS is all I could conclude. That is why my CPU score is only 15k at 4.16 GHz haha. The PhysX test heavily depends on memory bandwidth.

The dry ice is a good idea, one quick question for ya though. I know dry ice doesn't turn to a liquid but doesn't it leave chemical residue behind? I was under the understanding that dry ice is bonded chemicals, and slowly breaking that bond in warm air is what causes it to break down and "melt". Just a question making sure I don't go leaving a ton of chemicals all over my system if I do it lol.

I haven't seen any evidence of chemicals so far. My guess is that they vaporize as the dry ice sublimates. I've used a total of 13lbs on my system. Tomorrow Im going to get another 10lbs and ad Im benching the psu is going in the cooler. Gotta love sub zero cooling. If you look at the screen shot, my gpu's only got to 40*C range. :D

Haha thanks. I like 3DMark11. Its very consistent. I also realized that on that run I had the gpu's on a 45% overclock. Crazy. If only i had more cpu and gpu voltage control. That's my only limiting factor.

I've seen it as high as 265w, maybe a little higher. I unplug all system fans, leds, speakers, screen dimmed, ect. When my power supply does shut off, its not near the 265w+ I've.seen ot at so still not sure what's causing it.

I was able to top my Vantage score with clocks increased a tad. Had enough dry ice this morning for 2-3 runs. I had picked up 13 lbs on thursday, so there was about 1lbs left. I topped my scores in 3 of the 4 scores. CPU test two was the only one. My previous best was 28.81, and this time it was 28.14. Still, pretty pleased with the results. All I can say is this system is a monster. Finally broke the 23K mark for the CPU score.

OK so I've been doing some thinking, and one of the things I want to do is get a quality dice pot. It'll be for future benching, but may also come in handy with the M17x. Any suggestions on where to get them? I'm going to do some asking over at overclockers.com

Another thing I was thinking about was lapping the CPU. There are some faint scratches in it and I'd like to get that buffed out. Traditionally I know it's been done for desktop CPUs. Anyone ever seen it done on a mobile, or have done it before?

How are you planning on doing that? It's very risky as mobiles are protected by a very thin layer of "varnish" not by metal like desktop counterparts (which can be a good thing and a bad thing, depends) go too far and your chip is dead :(

Your right, I may just see if it can be polished. I may not even bother.

On another note I just put in an order for a nice Dice pot. Has lots of surface area, so it should be a lot better than my make shift dice pot :p

I also need to find some cheap mobos and some old CPUs and take a shot at some sub zero cooling. Anyone got some old stuff to get rid of? hahaha Could be fun :p

Nice looking pot, I have a mobo, ram, and maybe a CPU or 2 you can play with if interested. Shoot me a pm ;)

And do not bother lapping the cpu, it is already a perfectly mirror finish, those couple scratches are nothing to worry about, you are lucky the cpu still works....

This seemed the appropriate place to ask this question. When people bench with 3D Mark 06 are they using the free version or the one which you pay for? The reason I ask is because I wanted to see if people are testing with the default settings or changing them.

All default setting to compare to other systems, so the free would work, I just perfer to not have to go online for my scores, and perfer having a license for all my benching programs, so I've paid for them all, 3DMark 2001SE, 3DMark03, 3DMark05, 3DMark06, Vantage, 3DMark11. You get the point :p I like having results now! Must do moar benching!

Having the license is good for changing the settings for your own personal reasons.
