Your CPU temps are great and the 3DMark06 score is correct.
You need to look at your GPUs. It might be a driver issue.
Try re-installing the drivers or different ones (try the newest beta)

@PsychoUsagi -- way too low in 3dMark06. Ought to be around 10.5-11K. You are almost certainly in stealth mode. Press the touch control (button) with the tach/speedometer symbol located above the number pad.

Yay, that did it. So I take it that Fn+F7 is a separate function that completely disables the GPUs then? Regardless thanks, scored 10,550 3dmarks after doing this. Sorry I'm a newbie to Alienware. Repped. :3

What is a sufficient amt of time to stress test an OC? I am trying to determine max clock for day to day use.

Normally I just care if it finishes a benchmark run. :)

John suggested to use a program called Linx and to run it for about an hour. It is a linpack program essentially.

That is not bad. I found that my GTX 280m's in SLI overclocked about matched a desktop 4890. The 4870m's in CF beat a desktop 4890 pretty well if overclocked.

Something to keep in mind, at the same clocks, the 4870m's in CF ARE a desktop 4850x2 ;)

Yep that's pretty awesome. 650/2000 = desktop 4850x2 in a laptop lol. Cooling is freaking awesome in these machines.

It made me smile when I realized that equivalence haha. Since the 4850x2 is a SOLID card. I can also run my CPU at 9x 1333 - it is then a desktop q9650 and 4850x2 haha

but oh ya....it is a laptop!

Look at where the 4850x2 stands in this chart of desktop cards. I have found these charts to be pretty acurate (pretty good site).

I get around ~12,5k points in 3dMark Vantage - Performance mode - with my config. Don't have a screen to show unfortunately, but I'm happy with the score since I believe it's the cpu that's keeping it a little lower then other M17xs

You are running 3dmark06 which is highly CPU dependant, that's why I ran vantage. In 06 I get around 16k I believe.

why would I turn it off? just because your cards dont have physx. If It is there I should use it. Vantage test physx if i am not mistaken so why should I turn it off. Thats like telling the patriots that they cant start their qb because the other team does not have a qb who is just as good.

You turn it off because it artificially inflates the CPU score. You will notice that futuremark does not even rank your score if you have physx on, nor does HWBot - the highest recognized database for overclockers.

Stock, SLI 280m with 2.8 Ghz C2D is about 13,500.

Stock, the same system with XF 4870s is about 14,500.

OCing my C2D CPU and XF 4870 GPUs a bit gets me to about 15,500.

    @ 2.8 my Quad gets 15,500 in 06 and 11,000 in Vantage.

what's this 'unlocking the 4870' that someone mentioned earlier?

is that in reference to simply using RBE to change teh GPU and Mem clcoks or is there some other trick I need to know about?

I just got this thing yesterday. I can't figure out how to keep the clocks set after a reboot (unless you flash it, which i dont want to do) so I will keep the clocks stock unless I feel some heavy gaming coming on :)

Granted, even OC'd the GPU's didn't get nearly as hot as my gtx 280's in my desktop. So far I am happy with the power of this thing.

had to re-run i wasn't on a flat surface and i'm doing it in one sitting so it is in a controlled environment. i will also change my thermal paste depending on how things go. i hope that will shave off at least 5c. i'm running it for 30min. i'm going to doukin donuts and i'll come back.

Stuttering? I have zero stuttering. Played tf2 for hours, and that was after 2 or 3 OC'd 4870 vantage runs. Is it lag type stuttering? Or driver related stuttering? Or is it micro-stuttering thats induced by multi gpu's (normally you don't see this on more recent gpu's)

It is neither. Stuttering due to a lack of power to either the CPU or gpu. It causes a drop to single digit fps for a short interval and comes periodically. I found that crysis for example will stutter with ANY overvolting while most other program could tolerate overvolting without any stuttering.

Interesting. So the only way of fixing that is a bigger power supply, or to lower the OC's on the cpu and gpu to help minimize power draw?

    That sounds frustrating...

If I were you I would use AMD GPU tool to change it to 625/1000 and give some games/benches a shot. That way you know before the flash if its stable or not. Or is that what you have been doing?

Pretty much. But like I said, most programs do not cause enough load to cause the power draw to cause the stutter. We do not know if it is a limitation of the power supply or the power circuitry of the motherboars. But There is a bottleneck somewhere for power
