Thanks Mandrake, that post is going to be very useful.

One question though, in crossfire do you have to OC the cards with the same settings or can you OC one and leave the other one stock?

If I remember correctly it will default to the lower speeds so you have to do both.

Im not familiar with overclocking. What would I need to OC the 5870's for anyway? Arent they good enough as is?

I already posted these 3D Mark Vantage results in another thread, so I just wanted to post them in the official one as well. This is all stock drivers and factory settings (out of the box system). The only change I did is, I enabled the 5% CPU OC-ing from the bios (turbo mode enabled).

The cards are already good. But the point in overclocking them is for more peformance. Many overclock there systems for benchmarking, to see how far they can push their systems. You can also overclock to get more performance in game.

From what you guys have seen so far, do you think the crossfire 5870s would be able to game at eyefinity level? Say, 5040x1050? As 2x mobile 5870s would be close or slightly above one desktop 5870 (from my understanding), and if a single 5870 can handle eyefinity at 5040x1050, how would this handle? Anyone wanna try it out?

Also, do all three output ports on the M17x work? Thats, HDMI, Displayport, and VGA, right?

    Thanks guys...

sorry, meant, do all three ports on it work at the same time. And would all three work with eyefinity.

Just for comparison i researched what single desktop 5870's scored. It looks like their 3dmark vantage GPU scores ranged between 13k-15k stock.

The people that were scoring low, then got better scores attributed it to drivers. So I think the mobile 5870's are pretty good. I'm back to being excited again. And yes I suspect we'll get some getter drivers down the road.

    Hey all,

I've tried unsuccessfully to update to 10.5 drivers. Is there some trick to the process other than uninstalling dells drivers first?

ive tried several times and the drivers and ccc wont install. Now system bluescreens with a clock interrupt error...

i'm thinking nvidia options are looking sweeter by the minute...

i had another post going on this but some troll was all over it so here i am. id like to compare games benchmarks but am stuck at this step.

    alright, not bad...

so these could theoretically compete with a single desktop 5870 in eyefinity... provided that eyefinity is supportable with the 3 outputs at the same time.

Is the 3DMark Vantage scoring lower than the 3DMark 06 scoring? I'm curious because my M17 with stock 3870 x2 hit 13,600 on 3DMark 06. I am hoping for a much better score with the 5870s.

the thing is... 3dmark06 is not the best gpu benchmark. It scales heavily with raw cpu ghz. People that have higher clocked cpu's (even core 2 duo's) will find that their 3dmark 06 scores are higher.

That's why vantage is more key than anything with new cards. It doesn't use the cpu (as much) to scale the gpu score.

there is. I use the "Have Disk" way. when I run 10.5 catalyst suite, it doesn't detect my GPUS. so I install it and exit out of the catalyst installer when it pops up. Go to device manager, display adapters, 4870, and click properties on your first card.

In the properties window click on driver tab and click on update driver, browse my computer for driver software, let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer, Have disk, and then click on browse and go to where your 10.5 catalyst drivers installed. It should be my computer/Local Disk C:/ATI/Support/10-5_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc/packages/drivers/Display/W76A_INF/ and then select the file C7100002.

After that click on and select either of the ATI mobility 4870 and click next. your screen will flash then once completed you will be asked to reboot. there you have it.

Just to kick things off a bit I'll be editing this post in a few minutes with Crysis Warhead benchmarks between the 4870 xfire and 5870 xfire. The biggest difference between both systems is the 5870 xfire system has a slightly better CPU (820QM vs 720QM). But at 1200p with enthusiast settings, it shouldn't be a factor. Unfortunately, I won't be able to do extensive benchmarking today, I've got a lot of work I need to catch up on but I'll try to get at least Batman and Dirt 2 into the mix by tonight.

    System 1: Alienware M17x-R2, i820QM, 4GB DDR3 1333mhz, Dual 5870xfire
    Game 1: Crysis Warhead

    System 2: Alienware M17x-R2, i720QM, 4GB DDR 3 1066 mhz, Dual 4870m Crossfire.

i see the 5870`s benchies are starting to roll in. Doesnt look too promising sofar. Was hoping at least 24-25k 3dmark 06. Just asked me rep how much to upgrade to them will be. I might not bother now as ppl are sayign there not worth the upgrade over 4870`s.

Everything is stock, both are using the same driver version, same system bios. I'm seeing a 10% difference which is pretty pathetic. While I saw both running side by side, if I didn't have an FPS counter I wouldn't have noticed any difference in gameplay. The 5870 xfire system was getting 1-3 fps more but it was barely noticeable. Not impressed with the results thus far. About the only positive thing I noted was the nearly 20% difference in min. fps.

Like I said, the only redeeming quality of the 5870s is that the min. fps seems to be about 20% higher than dual 4870s. Average and max FPS is almost identical.
